Father and Daughter

Gennie POV

It took me a few beats to realise what I was seeing. I watched as Jonas moved his hand to hold the baby on his chest. I watched his thumb rub gentle circles onto her back. But it still didn't register until he spoke.

He spoke, like that. After weeks of silence, when I would have given anything to hear him say a few words, he simply asks me not to move the baby.

''Jonas'' I whispered. Not wanting to speak any louder in case I broke whatever spell had woken him up.

''Jonas, look at me''? I asked tentatively. I watched with tears in my eyes as my Mate's eyes found mine. They were crystal clear and overflowing with emotion.

''Hi, Baby'' he said to me. That was all it took to let the flood gates open. My legs could no longer carry me as I slipped down. Lucky for me, the chair next to the bed caught me. I grabbed Jonas's free hand and pulled it to my lips as I openly sobbed. All the pent up anxiety and frustration that had accumulated within me burst out.

I kissed his hand and pressed it to my cheek as I tried to get my emotions under control. Even though I had managed to stem the flood, I still had tears escaping when I spoke to him.

''Oh, Jonas. Baby, how do you feel? Are you in any pain? Do you want me to do something?'' All these questions came firing out of my mouth in a few seconds, and Jonas had to pull my hand to his lips to get me to stop.

''Wow, calm down Baby. I am okay. More than okay,'' he said as he looked down at the sleeping baby on his chest. I could see he wanted to sit up, so I gently removed the baby so he could pull himself up the bed and lean against the headboard. His chest was still bare from having all the machine cables attached to him. He lifted his arms straight away, and smilingly placed the baby back in his rms. He held the other arm out to me, and I gratefully sank onto the bed next to him.

I lay my head on his chest, savouring the feeling of complete calmness that was washing over me. I knew there were questions to be answered. I knew there were tests that needed to be run to make sure Jonas was okay. But none of that mattered at this moment in time. The only people that existed right now were my Mate, my Baby and me. We stayed like this for a long time, only pulled out of the bubble when Dr Julia barged into the room, followed by an ecstatic Greg.

''Alpha, Jonas'' both Greg and the doc had spoken simultaneously. Chuckling at each other, Dr Julia rushed to the bedside and started checking Jonas out. The funny thing was that I didn't think she realised there was a baby on his chest until she asked me to hold her. Which I did, of course. There was a comical pause, then a double take, and eyes full of questions looked directly at me.

''Doc, sort my mate out first, then we will talk about this little miracle'' I said firmly. Greg agreed with me straight away and led me to the big chair against the wall. He took the baby briefly whilst I sat down. Handing her back to me, I kissed the top of her head lovely and watched as the Doctor did her job. It was only a few minutes later that Dr Jiulia declared Jonas in full health.

Greg all but cheered at the doc's pronouncement. But before anything else could be said, I heard some beautiful words come from my Mate's mouth.

'Can I have Evie back, Gen? I'm okay to hold her, right doc?'' Jonas questioned quickly. All Julia had time to do was nod her head as I raised from the chair and placed the seeping babe back in her father's arms.

her father's arms' sapphire said contented. My heart did a light flutter in my chest at those words. Her father! Tears leaked out of my eyes again. Seeing me cry again, Jonas held my hand, as before, and kissed across my knuckles. I knew I looked a right sappy fool, but I couldn't help the smile that spread across my face. It seemed stuck on there for the moment.

It was Dr Julia who broke the spell again, making me jump slightly as I forgot where we were for a second. I let out a small chuckle and apologised to the room. Greg laughed and went to Jonas's side, where he clapped his Alpha and best friend on the shoulder and welcomed him back.

As the words left Greg's mouth, the mood in the room became quite sombre as I asked quietly 'Do you know what happened? Jonas, do you understand why you're in the hospital?''. I hadn't realised asking these questions would cause such pain in my heart. After all. Everything that had happened to Jonas was the result of his father's betrayal.

''I don't want to talk about that now. I want to know how I'm holding this gorgeous baby, that I know within my soul is mine, but I'm unclear on how she got here'. Jonas said this whilst looking at the baby girl, he never took his eyes off her while waiting for a response. Greg suggested we be left alone whilst I explained, but I said no to this. Dr Julia would have to know at some point, as she would be the primary care giver for anything medical.

"Jonas, there is something I never told you. I tried to broach the subject a few times, but always lost my nerve. The short version is that the moon goddess told me that I would never have children with you. As my anatomy is not the same as a regular she-wolf. When I was created, there was only enough magic to make me. Some normal body functions, like having a working womb, had to be left out'. My head was facing the floor now, as I let Jonas and the other digest what I had just said. Jonas started to speak, but I raised my hand slightly and carried on.

I reached for Greg's hand now as I spoke about saving Sara, and her getting pregnant shortly after. I asked if Jonas could remember the meeting I had with Sara and Greg, where they asked me if their baby would have any abilities like me. Jonas nodded his head at the memory and gestured to me to continue. ''When I asked my mother about this, I apparently gave her an idea, saying nothing to me or Sapphire. My mother placed a mixture of my essence and yours in Sara's womb so it could grow into a baby.

Even though Sara had agreed to do this, when the babies were born, Sara only had thought enough for them and forgot all that my mother had said. Until today.

I stopped at that point, as I was overtaken by a rush of love for the baby in my mates arms. Jonas could see in my eyes what I wanted, and held the baby out so I could take her. I breathed in her sweet baby smell and closed my eyes for a second.

Everyone in the room was quiet for a few minutes. Dr Julia was mumbling under her breath, but it was only words like miracle or goddess, that we could understand. Jonas only had eyes for the baby and me. As I bounced her gently, a thought struck me. Having heard it a few times, but have it not registered, I looked at Jonas and said ''Evie''?

Jonas grinned at me, and my stomach turned into butterflies, goddess I missed this man.

''Evie'' he said ''When I saw the light I needed to follow, I knew then that my little Evie was calling me home''. Jonas reached out and softly stroked the downy hair on the baby's head.

''If you don't like it, we can think of another name'' he said in a rush. I shook my head, lowered my face so I could kiss the baby, then pulling back a little, I said 'It's perfect. Evie is perfect. Just like her'.

Greg was beaming and Dr Julia was crying, while Jonas and myself got lost in our child for a few moments. It ended when Greg announced to the room he was off to tell his mate that Jonas was awake and that he had met Evie. He paced over to me and laid a gentle kiss on Evie's head. ''Uncle Greg, will see you soon, little one'' with that he left. Dr Julia asked somewhat tentatively if she could hold the baby and run a few checks on her.

I agreed at once and handed my daughter to the doctor. Jonas made us both laugh when he told the doctor to be careful and not to drop her. Dr Julia left the room with the baby. Leaving only Jonas and myself.

He taped the bed next to him, and I climbed on and hugged into him. He put both arms around me and kissed the top of my head. We stayed that way for a while. In a comfortable silence.

Again, my brain clicked into gear and I moved my head so I could look at Jonas. Not sure how the start I simply said two words. It was enough, as Jonas lifted me slightly away from him so he could look at me.

Nodding his head, I could see the dreamy expression on his face while holding Evie and me vanish. He repeated the words back to me and smiled a sad little smile that had my heart breaking for him. I could see him struggle to find the right words. Sapphire was speaking to Jax, very softly. Once the wolves had conversed and agreed, Jonas let out the breath he seemed to hold. Then repeated the words again.

''The light" was all he said. Nothing more was needed. And I prepared myself to hear what Jonas had to say. Sure that at some point I would be angry at my mother!!
