Chapter 6: Chapter 6

The rain has not stopped. It hammers against the windows of the DeLuca compound, a constant drum of warning, reflection, and tension. The city outside glows with neon, slick and alive with predators, human and otherwise, but the real storm is inside these walls.

Kael moves through the private study, his steps deliberate, precise. Every muscle in his body is tense, every instinct coiled, ready. I follow, trying to keep my composure, but my wolf thrums beneath my skin, restless and aware. Riven’s presence is still out there somewhere in the city, waiting, patient, calculating, and my wolf remembers the pull, remembers the ache from just a few hours ago.

Kael doesn’t speak at first. He shuts the door behind us with a soft click, and the room falls silent except for the rain. His eyes are sharp, assessing, and I feel the heat of his gaze on me. Not anger. Not displeasure. Fear.

“I can’t lose you,” he says finally, voice low, rough. The words are almost unrecognizable coming from him, stripped of his usual controlled, calm Alpha exterior. “Not to him. Not to anyone. I won’t.”

I freeze, the words hitting me like a strike. My wolf stiffens immediately, ears low, teeth bared, alert. The air between us thickens, tension rising like smoke before a fire.

“Kael,” I start, voice steady despite the thrum in my chest, “you cannot...”

“I can,” he interrupts sharply, stepping closer, eyes blazing silver. “You are mine. I have chosen you. I have kept you, protected you, guided you. And now… I’m afraid.”

I take a step back, instinctively, heart racing. “Afraid? Kael… we have a bond. You’ve never needed… to fear me leaving. You know me.”

His lips press into a thin line. “I know you, Lyra. I know you better than anyone. But you are strong. Independent. You’ve seen him, the rogue Alpha who wants what is yours by right of the bond. And I… I cannot be sure you will resist him.”

I swallow, my wolf growling low, frustrated at my hesitation, at the tension coiling in the room. My chest aches, torn between the pull I cannot deny and the bond I have chosen. “Kael… I’m not hers.” I stop, realizing the words are almost impossible to shape.

“You are mine,” he interrupts again, voice firmer, commanding. “And to ensure that… to ensure you are not tempted or drawn away… I’ve drawn up a contract.”

I blink, stunned. A contract? My wolf hisses softly, instinct screaming that this is possessive, controlling, but also… protective. I meet his gaze, searching for the nuance, the intent behind his words.

“You are joking,” I say, voice carefully measured, though my pulse quickens.

He shakes his head, calm and determined. “I am not. This contract will bind you to me formally for one year. A year of engagement. Not just legally, but by the customs of the pack and the rules of our world. You will be mine, Lyra. Fully. Without question. Without interference. And I will protect you, honor you, and provide for you as your mate, as your Alpha, and as your partner in all things.”

My wolf growls louder now, restless, uncertain. A year. One year. I glance at him, expression hardening. “And if I refuse?”

Kael’s gaze hardens, silver flaring. “You won’t. Because you are mine, Lyra. You have chosen me. You’ve worked with me, trusted me, bled for me. This contract is formalizing what already exists. And… I will not watch you be taken, not by him, not by anyone else.”

I take a step back, heart racing. “Kael… this isn’t just a legal matter. This… this is binding me to you, yes, but… it’s also a declaration. You’re afraid. You’re afraid I might...”

“Yes,” he admits, voice tight, honest. “I am afraid. I’ve never felt fear like this in my life. You are my mate, Lyra, and I… I cannot let him, cannot let anyone, claim you, because you are mine in ways the world will never understand.”

My wolf snarls, a warning and a protest. I feel the ache of Riven’s pull again, a faint echo, subtle but undeniable. My chest tightens. “Kael… what if I am… what if I am not entirely yours?”

“You are,” he says simply, eyes locking on mine. “You are. And this contract is only a formality, a safeguard. One year. One year for the city, for the pack, for the laws that bind us. One year of engagement. After that… we revisit. But for now, I need you bound to me, not out of control, not in danger, not exposed to him.”

My fingers tighten on the edge of the desk in front of me. My wolf is coiled, growling, restless, anxious. I can feel her pushing against my control, warning me that this is about more than words, more than protection. It’s a claim. Possession. And yet… I cannot deny the ache in my chest that relaxes slightly under Kael’s gaze, under the certainty of his voice.

“And if I agree?” I ask carefully, trying to keep my tone measured despite the storm inside me.

Kael’s lips curve in the faintest of smiles. “Then we solidify what already exists. You are my mate, Lyra. You work with me, fight with me, share my life. One year of engagement, signed and witnessed by the council, formalized by the pack. You remain free in choice, but bound in protection, loyalty, and recognition. And no rogue Alpha—no Riven Blackmoor—will take you from me.”

The words land like a blow. My wolf hisses, conflicted, torn between the instinct to obey and the pull that cannot be denied. My chest aches as the memory of Riven’s eyes flashes through my mind, silver and molten, intense and familiar, calling to something deep within me. I bite my lip, heart pounding.

“You are asking me to choose,” I whisper, voice raw. “To formalize what is… already ours in some ways, but…” I falter, struggling against the ache, the tension, the pull of a bond I cannot ignore completely. “But you are afraid. And I… I cannot bind myself out of fear.”

Kael steps closer, hand brushing mine gently. The contact is grounding, steady. “You will not bind yourself out of fear,” he says softly, eyes locked on mine. “You will bind yourself because you are mine. Because we are bound. Because the world will try to take you, and I will not allow it. This contract is not about fear—it is about certainty. About survival. About the bond that already exists and that cannot be broken, no matter what he does, no matter what the city throws at us.”

I close my eyes briefly, feeling the warmth of his hand, the steady hum of the bond beneath my skin. My wolf exhales softly, reluctantly accepting the grounding presence. My chest aches, torn between instinct, loyalty, and the pull that refuses to fade entirely.

“Fine,” I whisper, voice trembling, barely audible over the rain. “One year. But after that, we revisit everything. No exceptions.”

Kael smiles, a flash of warmth and triumph that makes my chest ache for a different reason entirely. “Agreed,” he says, pulling a small leather-bound folder from his desk. Inside is the contract, written in the laws of the pack and the rules of the city. He hands me a pen. “Sign, and we begin. One year, Lyra. One year of engagement. For us. For protection. For the bond that cannot be denied.”

I take a deep breath, wolf growling softly at my hesitation, and sign. The ink flows like a declaration, like a heartbeat, like a chain I willingly wrap around my life and my bond.

Kael’s fingers brush mine again as I set the pen down. “You’ve made the right choice,” he whispers, voice low, intimate. “No one can touch you now. Not him. Not anyone.”

My chest tightens as I glance toward the rain-streaked windows, imagining the shadow that watches from the city. Riven is out there. My mate. My wolf screams in anticipation and longing. I feel the ache, the pull, the inevitability of him. But I am bound, formalized, tethered to Kael, my chosen mate, protector, and Alpha.

For now, the city waits. The storm waits. And I know, deep in my chest, that Riven will not give up. He will not stop. And the pull that exists between us, mate, bond, and instinct will demand its reckoning.

Kael stands beside me, hand brushing mine, steadying, grounding, claiming. “We face whatever comes,” he murmurs. “Together.”

I nod, wolf growling low but resting for now. Together. For one year.

The night is far from over.
