Chapter 9: Mysterious Savior
Elara
"I'm coming home, Blayze," I thought, my heart full of hope. "And I'm not the same girl who left."
For the first time in my life, I felt complete. I wasn't just Elara the wolfless girl anymore. I was Elara, the Silver Wolf, and I had a mate to return to.
But then a chilling howl stopped me in my tracks.
"Going somewhere?" The voice made my blood freeze.
I turned slowly, my new silver fur bristling. There, emerging from the shadows, was a massive ninja wolf. His red eyes glowed with pure hatred, and he was at least twice the size of the others I'd fought.
"You thought you won because you chased away my little soldiers?" He laughed, the sound making my skin crawl. "How adorable."
I tried to stand tall, but my legs were shaking. Even with Snow's power flowing through me, I felt weak. Five days without food had taken their toll.
"Stay focused," Snow's voice whispered in my mind. "He's strong, but we're stronger."
"I won't let you hurt my baby," I growled, though my voice trembled.
The ninja wolf's laugh grew louder. "Your baby? Oh, you poor thing. There won't be a baby when I'm done with you."
He lunged without warning. I tried to dodge like Snow taught me, but my tired body was too slow. His claws raked across my shoulder, drawing blood.
"First time using those new legs?" he mocked. "It shows."
More ninja wolves emerged from the darkness, surrounding me. Their red eyes glowed with hunger as they closed in.
"Left!" Snow shouted in my head. I dodged just as claws slashed where I'd been standing.
"Behind you!" I spun, but not fast enough. Pain exploded across my back as another wolf caught me.
"Your stepmother sends her regards," the leader sneered, circling me. "She's offering quite a price for your head. Dead, of course."
My heart dropped. Of course Linda was behind this. She'd always hated me, but why would she go all the way to kill me, isn't banished enough for her?
"Why?" I gasped, dodging another attack. "What did I ever do to her?"
"Existed," he spat. "A wolfless nobody who dared to mate with the Alpha's son? You've embarrassed her in front of the whole pack."
Three wolves attacked at once. I managed to catch one with my claws, but the others got through. Fresh pain bloomed across my chest and legs.
"Don't give up!" Snow urged. "Think of your pup!"
But I was so tired. Blood matted my silver fur, making it dull. My vision kept blurring.
"Look at you," the leader taunted. "The mighty Silver Wolf, brought low. You're nothing but a scared little girl playing dress-up."
"I'm not..." I tried to stand, but my legs gave out. "I'm not nothing..."
"Oh, but you are." He raised his claws for the killing blow. "And now, you're dead."
I closed my eyes, thinking of Blayze. Of our baby. "I'm sorry," I whispered.
But the blow never came.
Instead, I heard a roar that shook the very ground. My eyes snapped open as something massive and black crashed into the ninja wolf leader.
It was another wolf, but unlike any I'd ever seen. His fur was pure black, seeming to absorb the moonlight itself. But his eyes... his eyes glowed golden with a fury that made even the ninja wolves step back.
He moved like a shadow come to life, his attacks precise and devastating. Two ninja wolves went down before they could even move. The others tried to fight back, but they might as well have been attacking smoke.
"Who is that?" I heard one ninja wolf whimper before the black wolf's claws found him.
For a moment, I thought it might be Blayze. But no - I remembered Blayze's wolf form. His fur was dark brown, not this impossible black that seemed to bend light around it.
The mysterious wolf cornered the ninja leader, who suddenly looked much smaller. His fighting style wasn't like anything I'd ever seen before - not even when Blayze fought the dire wolves at the ball. Every move was perfect, powerful, and deadly.
"Look at his form," Snow whispered in my mind. "He fights like an Alpha, but I've never seen a wolf with that color before."
The ninja leader tried to back away, but the black wolf was too fast. He caught him with one huge paw, throwing him against a tree. The sound of the impact made me wince.
"You dare attack a pregnant wolf?" the black wolf's voice was deep and angry. "Have you no honor?"
The ninja leader tried to get up. "You don't understand! She's valuable - her pup needs to die before-"
He didn't finish. The black wolf's teeth snapped inches from his throat, making him yelp in fear.
Two more ninja wolves tried to help their leader. They jumped at the black wolf from both sides, but he didn't even seem worried. He simply ducked, making them crash into each other.
"Amazing," I whispered, watching him fight. "How is he so strong?"
"His power feels ancient," Snow said in my mind. "Like ours. But different."
The black wolf fought like he could read their minds. Every time a ninja wolf tried to attack, he was already moving to counter. His claws flashed in the moonlight, drawing blood but never killing.
"He's holding back," Snow noticed. "He could kill them easily, but he's choosing not to."
The ninja leader made one last desperate attack. He aimed for the black wolf's throat, but it was a mistake. The mysterious wolf caught him mid-jump and slammed him to the ground.
Standing over the beaten leader, the black wolf looked even bigger. His golden eyes glowed with power as he spoke:
"Listen carefully, because I'll only say this once. If you or any of your pack ever come near her again, I will hunt you down. And next time, I won't be so merciful."
The ninja wolves scrambled away into the darkness, whimpering in fear. Their mighty leader looked like a scared puppy as he ran.
Then those golden eyes turned to me. All the anger disappeared, replaced by gentle concern.
"Who is he?" I asked Snow. "He fights like an Alpha but looks like a rogue."
"I don't know," Snow admitted. "But his power... it reminds me of the old times. Before the Silver Wolves disappeared."
The mysterious wolf walked toward me slowly, like he was trying not to scare me. Up close, his black fur seemed to move like smoke in the wind.
"Are you hurt badly?" he asked, his voice suddenly soft.
I tried to answer, but my legs felt weak. I had lost too much blood, and five days without food made everything spin.
"I need to... need to get home..." I mumbled. "Blayze... my mate..."
The last thing I saw were those strange golden eyes filled with worry as darkness took me.
He stepped closer, and I felt no fear - only a strange sense of... recognition?
But that was impossible. I'd never seen him before.
"Who..." I tried to ask, but darkness was creeping in at the edges of my vision.
The last thing I saw were those golden eyes, filled with worry as my legs gave out.
Who was this mysterious savior?
"Rest," I heard Snow say. "He won't hurt us. He feels... somehow not the bad guy."
I passed out, I couldn't help wondering. Who was this powerful wolf? And why did he risk his life to save me?
