Chapter 287: Tell Me What You Want

Serena Sinclair's POV:

"Come on," I tugged at his sleeve, pulling him toward his car. "Let's go see a movie."

I fumbled with my phone, focusing on the screen. "There's that new thriller everyone's talking about. It's playing at the Angelika in forty minutes."

Phillip didn't start the car. Instead, he watched me with that penetrating gaze that always made me feel transparent.

"I don't mind being asked about marriage," he said quietly, "because I do want to marry you, Serena."

My fingers froze over the movie app. My heart thundered against my ribcage, heat rising to my cheeks.

"This movie's getting great reviews," I said, my voice unnaturally high. "But we won't make the next showing. There's another one in two hours."

Phillip sighed, a small smile playing at his lips as he started the engine. "Two hours, then. What should we do meanwhile?"

"Let's wander around Manhattan," I suggested. "It's beautiful with all the Christmas decorations."

I looped my arm through Phillip's. "It's beautiful, isn't it? I never get tired of New York at Christmas."

"Cold?" he asked, noticing my reddened cheeks.

"Freezing," I admitted. "Let's find somewhere warm. That coffee shop?"

The upscale café welcomed us with blissful warmth and rich coffee aromas. We settled into a corner sofa, partially hidden from other patrons.

"Latte for me, black coffee for him," I told the server.

"Do you think the beginning is the happiest part of a relationship?" I asked suddenly.

Phillip considered this, his thumb stroking the back of my hand. "I'm not sure I have enough experience to compare."

"Aren't we dating now?"

"Is that what this is?" His blue eyes sparkled with amusement. "I thought we'd moved beyond mere dating."

He leaned closer, his breath warm against my ear. "If we're dating, shouldn't we be more intimate?"

"We shouldn't in public—" The rest of my protest died as his lips found mine.

The world faded away—there was only Phillip, his hand cradled against my jaw, his lips moving against mine. Through the window, neon lights cast colorful shadows across us, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

When we separated, I asked breathlessly, "What exactly do you like about me?"

His intense gaze never wavered. "Everything. I like everything about you."

I laughed softly. "That's such a generic answer. Not very romantic."

But my heart melted at his straightforward declaration. His honesty felt more genuine than any elaborate words could have been.

We sat in comfortable silence, my head on his chest, his arm around my shoulders. Through the window, New York continued its pace, but inside our bubble, time seemed suspended.

Too soon, we left for the movie. In the theater lobby, I spotted Alex and Emma near the concession stand. Emma complained loudly about popcorn prices and Alex's recent spending. Alex looked detached, barely responding.

"Alex has been in such a terrible mood lately," Emma's voice carried. "I think he's still hung up on—"

I grabbed Phillip's arm, turning away before they noticed us. "Let's go somewhere else."

"Manhattan's social circles are small," Phillip said gently. "You can't avoid them forever."

"I can avoid them tonight," I insisted, backing toward the exit. "I'm just not ready."

His expression softened. "Alright. I'll get us a cab."

We found another theater showing the same film. As the lights dimmed, Phillip's fingers intertwined with mine. My tension gradually dissipated.

After eleven, we emerged to a quieter Manhattan. The temperature had plummeted further.

"My place is closer," Phillip said, his arm around my shoulders. "And warmer."

After a hot shower, I sprawled face-down on his enormous bed, wearing just a silky slip. The bullet wound on my shoulder had healed to an angry red scar, exposed to the air.

I heard Phillip enter, followed by the sound of a jar opening. "What's that?"

"Scar treatment," he explained, sitting beside me. "It will help reduce the appearance of your wound."

His fingers gently spread cool gel across my damaged skin. "Does it hurt still?"

"Only sometimes," I admitted. "When I move too quickly or sleep on that side."

"Will this actually work?" I asked drowsily.

"It's the most advanced formula available, imported from Switzerland," he assured me. "Clinically proven to reduce severe scarring by up to eighty percent."

A sudden insecurity gripped me. "But what if it doesn't work? What if the scar never goes away? Would you find me less attractive?"

His hand stilled, disappointment in his voice. "Is that really what you think of me? That I'd be bothered by a scar?"

Before I could explain, he gently turned me over. His blue eyes were serious, almost hurt.

"Serena," he said softly, leaning down to press his lips against the scarred flesh. "Every time I see this mark, I'm reminded of what you were willing to sacrifice for me. How could that ever make you less beautiful?"

His lips traced from my shoulder to my collarbone, sending shivers through me. "You're perfect, Serena. Scars and all."

His hand slid beneath my slip strap, pushing it off as his mouth continued exploring. My breath hitched as his fingers trailed down my arm.

"I nearly lost you," he murmured against my skin. "When I saw you bleeding in my arms, nothing else mattered—not my company, not my family name, nothing but you."

I cradled his face, bringing his lips to mine. The kiss deepened instantly, months of tension crystallizing into this perfect moment. His weight shifted over me, his knee parting my legs as his hand traced my waist.

My fingers tangled in his hair, pulling him closer as our bodies pressed together. His hand moved lower, tracing the curve of my hip with exquisite slowness that made me tremble with anticipation.

The room felt electric, charged with unspoken emotions and desires too long denied. His lips found the sensitive hollow of my throat, then moved lower still. I gasped as his mouth traced the edge of the silk across my chest, his breath hot against my skin. My hands slid under his shirt, exploring the muscled contours of his back, feeling his heart racing as frantically as my own.

"I've wanted this for so long," he whispered, his voice rough with desire. His fingers traced lazy patterns along my inner thigh, making me shiver with need. "I've wanted you since the first moment I saw you."

The confession sent a thrill through me. His lips captured mine again, more urgent this time, stealing my breath and leaving me dizzy with longing. The last barriers between us—both physical and emotional—were dissolving with each heated caress.

"Phillip," I gasped as his lips found the sensitive spot beneath my ear.

"Tell me what you want," he whispered, his voice husky.

"You," I replied. "Just you."
