Chapter 40 Domestic Awkwardness
Marriage did not make things easier. If anything, it made everything worse. Not in the catastrophic, kingdom-shaking, scandal-breeding way their courtship had managed to accomplish so effortlessly. Not in the way of duels half-started, nobles emotionally maimed in public, or one very unfortunate viscount crying in a hallway after making the mistake of underestimating Ulrika Vincent's smile. No. This was worse in a quieter, more humiliating way. Because the moment vows had been spoken, documents signed, blessings given, and half the empire forced to collectively accept that Grand Duke Aric Solheim and Duchess Ulrika Solheim were now legally, spiritually, politically, and inconveniently bound to one another— they had been left alone. And it turned out that being alone together was a problem. A very large problem. A problem with expensive furniture, ancestral portraits, and enough staff members lurking in corners to develop secondhand anxiety.
The Grand Duke's residence—once a place of rigid order, silence, and controlled efficiency—had become unpredictable. It had not become loud, exactly. That would have been easier. No, it had become something far more alarming to those who lived there daily. Unstable. Servants walked softer. Knights spoke quieter. Maids exchanged looks with the grave solemnity of battlefield medics. Because inside the main wing, something deeply unnatural was happening. The Duke did not know how to exist around his own wife. And the Duchess— …was not helping. At all.
In fairness to Aric, he had been built for war, governance, discipline, and emotional repression so severe it deserved academic study. He knew how to command armies. He knew how to negotiate border disputes. He knew how to identify weak points in a fortress, route supply lines through winter terrain, and dismantle assassination attempts with the efficiency of a man sorting papers. He did not know how to wake up beside a woman who looked devastatingly beautiful with her hair loose over the pillows and then proceed to have a normal morning conversation about bread. Especially when that woman was Ulrika. Ulrika, who smiled like every sentence might be a trap. Ulrika, who moved through the world with the terrifying confidence of a person who had already mentally mapped all exits, weapons, and structural vulnerabilities. Ulrika, who had become his wife with a speed and intensity that bypassed every stage of normal human familiarity and deposited them directly into matrimony, household management, and shared sleeping space. And, of course, children. That part alone would have broken the minds of lesser people. Aric was very close to qualifying as a lesser person. Because there was no dignified way to process the fact that he had gone from never having successfully been flirted with in his life to having a wife who treated him with unsettling ease, a marriage the entire empire watched like vultures circling fresh meat, and the reality of impending fatherhood pressing against his ribs every time he looked at her.
He was trying. This was important. He was genuinely trying. Unfortunately, his idea of trying looked a lot like standing motionless in rooms and alarming the staff. This became particularly apparent at breakfast. Morning sunlight spilled through the tall windows of the smaller breakfast hall, touching silverware, porcelain, and the polished surface of a table so absurdly long it seemed designed to facilitate diplomatic cold wars rather than meals. It was, perhaps, a beautiful room. It was definitely a hostile one.
Ulrika sat at one end of the table, eating like she had personally declared war on the concept of hunger and intended to win. Aric sat at the other. Perfect posture. Perfect composure. Perfectly not eating. He had a cup of tea before him. It had not been touched. The steam had begun to thin. Ulrika cut into a honey-glazed pastry with the concentration of a military tactician, then glanced up mid-bite. Her eyes landed on him. Then on the tea. Then back on him.
"...are you going to drink that," she asked, "or interrogate it?"
Aric blinked once. "...I am observing."
"It's tea."
"...yes."
Silence. She stared at him. He stared at the tea. The tea, innocent victim that it was, continued being tea. Then Ulrika leaned back slightly in her chair, fork still in hand. "...you're doing it again."
Aric lifted his gaze to her face. "...doing what."
"Thinking like it's a battlefield."
His expression did not change. "It could be."
"It's tea."
"...poison exists."
Ulrika slowly lowered her fork. For one dramatic second, the attending footman nearest the wall looked like he wanted to evaporate through solid stone. Then she said, very evenly, "...if someone poisoned your tea, I would already know."
A pause followed. Aric turned his head a fraction more toward her. "...how."
She took another bite first, which somehow made it worse. Chewed. Swallowed. Then smiled slightly. "...because I'd have done it better."
The room went so silent that one could probably hear the household gods losing faith in humanity. Aric stared at her. His brain did not know whether to be reassured or concerned. Neither answer felt correct. Across the room, one maid lowered her gaze to the floor with the reverence of someone witnessing a sacred, incomprehensible ritual. Another gripped a serving tray hard enough to leave marks.
Aric eventually said, with great care, "...that is not comforting."
Ulrika shrugged, unconcerned. "It should be. It means no one here is competent enough to kill you before I notice."
"That," Aric said after a pause, "is still not comforting."
She considered that. "Perhaps your standards for comfort are strange."
"They are not."
"They are."
Aric looked at her for a long moment. Ulrika looked back with complete calm, then reached for roasted potatoes as if she had not just implied she could design a superior assassination method before sunrise. They ate like that. Across from each other. Not uncomfortable— but not comfortable either. Two people who had skipped everything in between. Strangers. With vows. With children. With something between them that refused to be named because naming it would make it real, and real things were infinitely more dangerous than political enemies.
At length, Aric picked up the teacup. Every servant in the room visibly relaxed. He noticed. He wished he hadn't. He took one measured sip. Ulrika watched him over the rim of her own glass. "...well?"
He set the cup down. "It is acceptable."
Her brows rose. "Acceptable."
"Yes."
She stared at him, offended on behalf of the tea. "That blend is imported."
"I did not say it was poor."
"You sounded like you were evaluating military rations."
Aric folded his hands. "I evaluate most things."
"Yes, I've noticed. You assess cutlery like it has tactical intent."
"It can."
"It's a spoon."
"A sharpened spoon can kill a man."
"Only if the man is incompetent."
"Most people are."
She paused with a piece of fruit halfway to her mouth. Then, slowly, a smile tugged at her lips. "That," she said, "is the first genuinely warm thing you've said all morning."
Aric blinked. "I did not mean it warmly."
"I know." She ate the fruit. "That's why it was funny."
He looked away. Ulrika, meanwhile, went back to breakfast with infuriating ease, as if being married to the most emotionally constipated war hero in the empire was merely an interesting scheduling complication. The problem was that Aric could not predict her. On a battlefield, unpredictability could be accounted for. Contained. Redirected. Broken. In a marriage, apparently, unpredictability sat across from you at breakfast and mocked your tea.
He was beginning to suspect he was outmatched. That realization followed him through the rest of the morning. The residence itself had adapted in strange ways to the new state of things. The staff no longer referred to the main corridor outside the ducal chambers as merely the main corridor. They referred to it, privately, as the weather line, because one could reportedly determine the emotional climate inside the main wing by the speed at which the Duke's aides exited it. If Lord Cassian, Aric's long-suffering aide, emerged briskly but upright, the day was manageable. If he emerged with the expression of a man who had just seen an attack map rewritten into something technically brilliant and morally concerning by the Duchess over lunch, all nonessential communication was postponed. If he emerged pinching the bridge of his nose and muttering prayers, the household entered quiet mode.
Today was leaning toward quiet mode. Cassian had delivered a stack of reports to Aric's study just before noon and found both Duke and Duchess inside. That, on its own, should not have been alarming. The alarming part was that Ulrika was upside down on a sofa. Not reclining. Upside down. Her head hung over one armrest, her legs draped over the back, one hand holding an intelligence report while the other absently peeled an orange. Aric sat at his desk, reading correspondence in perfect stillness. He did not appear to find this arrangement unusual. That frightened Cassian more than the posture itself.
"My lord," he said carefully.
Aric looked up. "What is it."
Cassian approached, set down the documents, and then—against every instinct for self-preservation he possessed—made the mistake of looking at Ulrika. She looked back from her inverted position. "Good afternoon," she said.
Cassian bowed automatically. "Your Grace."
"Did you know," Ulrika said conversationally, shaking the report lightly, "that three of the estates under House Velm are reporting reduced grain output that does
not match their projected weather damage?"
Cassian froze. "I—"
"They're lying," she continued. "Or skimming. Possibly both."
Aric did not even look surprised. Cassian, who had spent seven years watching the Duke terrify half the nobility into bureaucratic obedience, was suddenly struck by the realization that the Duchess might be worse. Aric extended a hand. Ulrika flung the report at him without sitting up. He caught it without effort. Cassian stared. Neither of them acknowledged what had just happened.
Aric scanned the page. "She is correct," he said.
Cassian made a small sound somewhere between pain and surrender. "Of course she is."
Ulrika smiled at the ceiling. "Thank you."
"I was not complimenting you."
"No, but you thought it."
Cassian took one step backward. "If there is nothing further, I will review the tax ledgers."
"Do that," Aric said.
"And bring the ledgers from the eastern district," Ulrika added. "The numbers there smell dishonest."
Cassian bowed again and left before anyone could say anything else unsettling. Outside the study doors, he stood in the corridor for a full five seconds. Then he looked at the guard stationed nearby. The guard looked back. Cassian said, in a hollow voice, "They are having a conversation."
The guard, after a beat, replied, "Should we alert the chapel?"
Cassian considered it. "...not yet."
By evening, the house had reached a state of tense curiosity. No one could quite determine whether the Duke and Duchess disliked each other, liked each other, were slowly developing feelings, or were simply two catastrophically strange people circling something too large to confront directly. The answer, unfortunately, was yes.
Dinner was somehow worse than breakfast. Not because anything happened. Because nothing happened. The dining room was smaller than the state hall but still too large for intimacy. Candles burned low. Silver gleamed. The windows reflected back two figures seated opposite each other like players in a game with rules neither understood.
Aric cut into his food with measured precision. Ulrika ate like someone who still did not trust the universe to provide meals consistently. He had noticed that. That she never wasted food. Never left a plate untouched. Never treated abundance as normal. He did not ask why. Not yet. She noticed him noticing. That was the problem with Ulrika. Very little escaped her.
"You're staring again," she said without looking up.
"I am not."
"You are."
"I was thinking."
"About me."
He paused. A dangerous pause. "...partially."
That made her lift her gaze. For once, she looked genuinely caught off guard. He was not sure whether to take satisfaction in that. "What about me," she asked.
Aric set down his knife. He could have lied. He probably should have lied. Instead, because marriage had apparently begun eroding his survival instincts, he said, "You eat as if you expect the food to disappear."
Ulrika went still. Not visibly to most people. But Aric saw it. A tiny shift in the shoulders. A brief stillness in the hand. Then she resumed eating. "I used to have reasons."
The answer was simple. Too simple. Which meant the truth under it was not. Aric felt, for one strange moment, as if he had stepped to the edge of something vast and dark. He did not press. But he did say, quietly, "You do not need to have those reasons here."
Her expression changed. Softened was the wrong word. Ulrika did not soften easily. She sharpened, adjusted, laughed, attacked, evaded. But something in her gaze flickered. A startled kind of stillness. Like no one had ever offered her safety without demanding something in return.
"That," she said after a long moment, "is an extremely dangerous thing to say to me."
"Why."
"Because I might believe you."
Aric did not look away. "You should."
There was no humor in it. No ceremony. Just fact. For the first time that day, neither of them moved to break the silence. The candles crackled softly. Somewhere outside, wind moved through the stone corridors of the residence. Ulrika looked down at her plate, then back at him. And something unsteady passed between them—thin as silk, sharp as wire. Not romance. Not yet. Not anything so easy. Trust, perhaps. Or the beginning of its possibility. Which, for the two of them, was probably more frightening than love.
She exhaled through her nose. "Gods," she muttered. "You make sincerity sound like a death sentence."
"I have been told my tone is severe."
"Severe?" She almost laughed. "Aric, when you assure people they are safe, it sounds like you are sentencing the rest of the world."
He considered that. "That seems efficient."
This time, she actually laughed. Not loudly. But genuinely. It changed her whole face. Aric had seen her smile before—sharp, mischievous, devastating, often weaponized. This was different. Less guarded. More surprised by its own existence. It hit him with the force of a cavalry charge. He understood, abruptly and unhelpfully, why men had made fools of themselves over women throughout history. What a humiliating species weakness.
Ulrika noticed the look on his face and narrowed her eyes. "What."
"Nothing."
"That was not a nothing expression."
"I do not know what that means."
"It means," she said, pointing at him with her fork, "that your face briefly developed humanity and now I am suspicious."
Aric looked at the fork. At her hand. At her face. "...you should not point weapons at your husband."
Her eyes widened a fraction. Then gleamed. "Forks are weapons now?"
"In your hands, likely."
"How romantic."
"It was not intended romantically."
"Everything sounds romantic when you say it like a threat."
He inhaled slowly. She was impossible. She was unbearable. She was sitting across from him beneath candlelight, alive and sharp-eyed and infuriating, carrying his children and turning every simple exchange into a skirmish he never quite won. And somewhere in the center of that realization was a dangerous, growing truth: he was beginning to enjoy this. Which was either a sign of emotional growth or mental collapse. He had not decided which.
Later that night, after the staff withdrew and the halls quieted, the problem became worse again. Because they had to go to bed. Together. No amount of military training had prepared Aric for this. The ducal bedchamber was large, elegantly appointed, and entirely too aware of its own purpose. Firelight glowed low in the hearth. The curtains had been drawn. The bed itself stood like a monument to noble expectations.
Ulrika stood by the dressing screen, braiding her hair with quick, practiced movements. Aric stood near the window for no reason whatsoever except that it gave him something to do that was not openly panicking. He was not panicking. He was conducting an internal tactical reassessment under pressure. Different thing. Completely different.
Ulrika glanced at him in the mirror. "You're doing it again."
Aric stiffened. "...doing what."
"Standing like you're about to negotiate with an enemy commander."
He looked toward the fire. "I am standing."
"You are standing aggressively."
"I was not aware there were categories."
"There are with you."
She finished her braid, then turned to face him fully. The room was very quiet. Too quiet. Aric became acutely aware that they were alone. His wife studied him for a moment, then sighed—not irritated, but thoughtful.
"You know," she said, "you do not have to look like sharing a room with me is your final trial before death."
"I do not."
"You do."
He frowned faintly. "I am attempting to be respectful."
Something about that made her expression shift. The teasing eased. Not vanished—she was still Ulrika—but eased. "I know," she said.
That, somehow, made it harder. Aric looked at her. "And you are not helping."
A pause. Then her mouth opened slightly in what might have been real surprise. "I'm not helping."
"No."
"I have been extremely restrained."
He stared. "Restrained."
"Yes."
"Ulrika."
"Aric."
"You told me this morning that if my tea had been poisoned, you would have done it better."
"That was helpful. It narrowed the suspect pool."
He closed his eyes for one brief, exhausted second. When he opened them, she was smiling. There it was again. That feeling. That dangerous warmth under the ribs. He should have found it alarming. He mostly found it inconvenient.
"...you are impossible," he said.
Her smile softened into something quieter. "I have been called worse."
The words were tossed lightly. Too lightly. And Aric, who was beginning to learn the fault lines hidden under her humor, heard what was beneath them. He crossed the distance between them before fully deciding to do it. Not fast. Not dramatically. Just enough to stand before her. Ulrika went still. This time, not hidden at all.
Aric looked down at her, his voice low and steady. "Perhaps," he said, "they were wrong."
For once— for once— she had no immediate answer. The fire snapped in the hearth. Neither moved. The space between them felt suddenly charged, fragile, dangerous in a way neither swords nor politics had ever been. Then Ulrika looked away first, which shocked him so thoroughly he nearly forgot how to breathe.
"That," she said quietly, "was unfairly competent."
"I do not know what that means."
"It means," she said, still not looking at him, "that I am trying very hard not to
become emotional over something ridiculous."
He frowned. "It was not ridiculous."
That brought her gaze back to him. And there it was again. That strange, impossible thing neither of them wanted to name. Not because it was absent. Because it was becoming too present. Too real. Too capable of mattering.
At last, Ulrika stepped around him and moved toward the bed. "Come sleep, Your Grace," she said, voice lighter again by sheer force of will. "You look like a man being haunted by furniture."
Aric turned slightly to watch her. "That is a very specific insult."
"I tailor my work."
And there she was again—sharp, elusive, impossible to hold in one shape for long. He exhaled, something almost like a laugh threatening and then failing to fully form. Then he joined her.
The bed remained too large. The silence remained too full. But when the candles were extinguished and darkness settled soft around them, the distance between their bodies was not quite as vast as it had been the night before. Not close. Not yet. But less. And in the dark, with the whole residence quiet around them and the strange new shape of their shared life pressing in from all sides, both Aric and Ulrika lay awake for longer than either admitted.
Strangers. With vows. With children. With a household that now listened for signs of emotional collapse through stone walls. And with something between them that refused to stay nameless forever. Something patient. Something sharp. Something growing in the silence, in the awkwardness, in the badly timed sincerity and the weaponized humor and the impossible, fragile act of learning one another after marriage had already bound them together.
Neither of them knew what to call it. Neither of them was ready to. But for the first time, in the strange and sacred discomfort of shared domestic life, it no longer felt like a void between them. It felt like a bridge. Half-built. Dangerous. Unsteady. And real.
