Chapter 135: Seeing-- Esme POV
Esme POV
“You’re always so cryptic, Leilani.”
“Where’s the fun in telling the truth so easily?”
I spent hours in this library studying. Leilani would swoop in and distract me for hours with stories. It’s incredible how she never told me the truth about my birth mother. Speaking of studying, I was so behind on my lessons I didn’t know how I’d pick up my degree again.
After everything that was going on in my life, going back to school was not a major priority.
Leilani was the unofficial pack seer. She hadn’t given a prophecy or seen a vision since I was fourteen years old. So, for her to tell me she’s seen something was a big deal.
Leilani went around closing the windows and stuffing the holes in the walls.
“I know you’ve been through a lot, Esme. I heard you got your wolf,” Leilani said.
I nodded. “I did. She’s gorgeous, Leilani.”
“I can imagine. I also overheard you telling your mother you have certain powers. I know those powers too well.”
My eyes widened. I don’t know why I didn’t think about her before! Leilani had a wealth of information.
“Yes, can you help me learn to control my powers?” I asked hopefully.
“Me? That’s not my part. However, I have seen something interesting. This year is the tenth cycle of the sun! Isn’t that exciting?”
I frowned. “What?”
“Your mate is a wolf born in the tenth cycle of the moon!”
“So, your visions are back, huh?”
She beamed. “There’s a lot to be seen.”
“Okay, tell me, how does the tenth cycle of the sun correlate to the cycle of the moon?”
“The cycles are perfectly aligned now. Something incredible and wondrous is expected to happen then.”
“Like…”
“An eclipse.”
I bit my bottom lip. “Is that something Dana can use to hurt Zeron?”
Leilani paused in front of a bookshelf. She picked out a book. “Dana, Dillon’s former wife.”
“Yeah, her daughter’s married to Zeron.”
Leilani held the small book to her chest and frowned. “You’re in a pickle. Okay, so tell me Dana’s plan.”
I narrated Dana’s entire crazy plot and her need for more essence. I commented on Dillon De Monte not being safe either, but Leilani didn’t seem interested in his well-being.
“Do you think Reya’s in danger?” I asked nervously.
“Reya’s powers are incredibly dangerous. She could destroy an entire pack with the blink of an eye. Dana would be foolish to attack her.”
I nodded. “I see.” Reya’s the only one who can help me with my powers. I have to find her.
I’m less than ready to face her.
Leilani continued. “Dana would most likely attack Kinslee here, but that would be just as foolish without an army.”
I sat back in my seat. “It’s not impossible, Leilani. Her daughter’s the Luna of a powerful pack! She’s already tried to attack Zeron once, and Rina managed to put him in a coma. Plus, they have the commander in their pocket.”
“I see. Dana and her daughter need to be stopped. I can imagine they’d utilise the powers of the eclipse to turn Zeron into a beast. He would lose his mind forever, Esme. He won’t be the mate you know anymore.”
Sweat formed on my brow as I realised something.
“Zeron and I are destined souls. If something happens to him, that means something happens to me too, right?”
Leilani exhaled deeply, and for the first time in a long time, she looked stressed.
“You need to leave, Esme. I’ve got things to work out.”
“What?”
“Shoo.” She kicked me out of the library. “I’ll be in touch when I see something else.”
The door closed in my face.
Geez, I won’t be here that long.
I hadn’t seen my mate all morning. We needed to talk about our trip back to the West End pack. However, I didn’t want to do much talking. I could still feel his fingers on my skin and his mouth on mine.
Surely, we could find a minute to sneak away for some couple time.
“Princess Esmeray!” Layla exclaimed as she sashayed towards me in her purple dress. “Or is it just Esme now, since you have absolutely nothing in this pack house?”
My wolf raised her head and growled. I’d known Layla my whole life. We grew up together and often played together and attended the same schools, but it was obvious from a young age that she was only interested in Silas.
She tried to be close to me, but we never gelled. Desirae never liked her, so we never formed a powerful trio.
Thank goodness for that.
“Isn’t it the lowlife who thinks she’ll get my brother to marry her instead of his wonderful fated mate! Lenora is amazing, by the way. My brother is an idiot, but he can’t fight the mate bond forever.”
Layla chuckled and crossed her arms. “I’d be kissing my feet if I were you. I don’t think Silas will marry me. Once I’m the Queen Luna, you’ll be less than the mat I rub my feet on.”
I rolled my eyes painfully. “There are plenty of other packs, and Alphas go bother one of them!”
“Why?” Layla shrugged. “When Silas is so close?”
“Because he’s taken!”
“You’re not even his sister! No one cares about your opinion.”
“Stop it,” I mumbled.
“Stop?” Layla laughed.
Her laughter was like broken glass circulating in my ears.
“You’re not his sister. I know everything. You’re a fraud. It would be better if you were an illegitimate child, Esme. For once, being a bastard is a good thing, but you?” Layla continued laughing.
Every part of me became hot from embarrassment and rage.
“You’re not worth it, Layla.” I turned around, but she followed me.
“You still think you’re better than me, but you’re less than a bastard? That’s so rich!”
“There are a thousand reasons I’m better than you, and they have nothing to do with who my parents are. Oh, see what I did there? Your biggest flex is who your daddy is. Not me!”
Her jaw dropped, and her eyes widened. “You little bitch! I’m going to murder you!” She screeched like a banshee.
She grabbed my shoulders and threw us against the wall.
“Get off me!” I groaned. “Stop!”
“Hey!” Zeron shouted, but from downstairs. “Esme!”
“This crazy person won’t get off me!” I struggled against her incredible strength.
Something boiled over inside me. I felt the energy leave my fingertips and blast Layla against the opposite wall. That wasn’t all. The power bounced off the wall and hit the curtain.
Crap.
The curtains went up in flames.
