Chapter 136: Determination
Logan’s Point of View
“You are so unbelievable, Logan,” she growled, rolling her eyes as if I had done something completely unforgivable. “I can’t even believe this…” she muttered under her breath, grabbing the edge of her dress.
She rummaged through her luggage before pulling out a two-piece set of nightwear. My eyes followed her every movement, watching her with dark, sickly amusement.
My thoughts were nothing pure, and honestly, I had a boner from just it.
She huffed and cursed under her breath as she waddled around the room, picking things up and putting them back down again. Eventually, she disappeared into the bathroom and slammed the door so hard that it rattled against the wall.
I almost laughed, it was strangely cute and sexy seeing her this angry.
I lay back on the bed, but I wasn’t tired enough to sleep. After such a long day, I should probably take a shower too.
Then I heard the beep of a phone notification, my gaze flickered toward the sound. The screen of Dawn’s phone lit up, illuminating the otherwise dim room.
I ignored it at first then another beep sounded.
Curiosity got the better of me.
I leaned over and stretched out my hand, reaching for the phone.
My eyebrows pulled together when I saw the name on the notification.
Jasper.
Jasper: Why are you ignoring me? We need to talk.
A small smile tugged at the corner of my lips, so she was ignoring him too. Was she ignoring him because of me? A strange sense of victory swelled in my chest. My eyes shifted toward the bathroom door, the faucet was still running.
She was still in there.
Then another notification appeared.
Jasper: I need us to talk about that kiss.
My smile disappeared, a sting formed at the corner of my mouth, like I sucked in lime.
Kiss?
What the fuck was he talking about?
What kiss? Just as I was pondering, another message appeared.
Jasper: I know all of this sounds sudden, especially considering the fact that I just broke up with Morgana, but I don't think that kiss was just an ordinary kiss for me.
My jaw tightened, he broke up with his girlfriend? To be with Dawn? What the hell? I read the message again, my irritation growing with every word, and even more notification beeped in.
Jasper: I need you to respond so we can talk about it or where are you, I’ll come meet you.
I stared at the screen.
So that was it, this was the reason Dawn had been acting differently.
She had kissed Jasper, and apparently, he wanted to do something about it. More messages kept coming, one after another, and I just froze.
I was so absorbed in what I was reading that I didn’t even hear the faucet turn off. I didn’t hear the bathroom door open, or her footsteps approaching.
The only thing that finally broke through my thoughts was her sharp voice.
“What the hell are you doing with my phone?” She stormed toward me, before I could say anything, she snatched the phone from my hands.
I immediately got to my feet, easily towering over her.
Her eyes flickered across the screen.
Then they widened.
She realized I had seen everything.
“Do you want to explain those messages?” I asked.
She paused for a moment, probably trying to figure out what to say.
Then she looked back at me. “And why exactly do I need to explain them to you?”
I stared at her, almost certain she couldn’t be serious.
“As you can see, I kissed Jasper, and he wants to talk to me about it. The message is pretty self-explanatory, so what else do you need me to explain?”
“You kissed Jasper.” The words left my mouth before I could stop them, betrayal burning in my eyes. My hands reached for her, and I caught her by the arms.
“Let go of me,” she demanded, wriggling against my grip. “You kissed Jasper.”
My voice tightened with every word, I could feel the anger building inside me, pressing against my chest until it was almost impossible to breathe through it.
“How could you do something like that?”
“And so what if I kissed Jasper?” she shot back. “I’ve seen you kiss Dorothy plenty of times.”
“That’s different.”
“How?” I went silent, she stared at me, waiting for an answer.
“It’s different because, back when I was kissing Dorothy, you didn’t exist in my mind like this.” Her expression shifted slightly. “The idea of you had never even formed in my head yet. I didn't know what I felt for you.”
I released a slow breath.
“But now I do.” I held her gaze. “And I could never kiss another woman the way I used to. Not after realizing how I feel about you.”
“Well, I don’t feel anything for you.” She swallowed hard before continuing. “Yes, I kissed Jasper. We’re step-siblings now. This can’t work, and I need you to get that into your thick skull. We need to start accepting reality. Our parents are married, and we need to move on.”
I grabbed her arm and pulled her closer.
Her body collided with my chest, and she immediately went still.
“Look me in the eye and tell me you don’t feel anything for me,” I said, she swallowed hard. My eyes followed the movement of her throat.
“I don’t care what you say, Dawn. It fucking kills me that you kissed that bastard.”
My voice shook with anger.
“And what I want to do right now is make sure he never gets the chance to touch you again.” I clenched my jaw.
“How could you do something like that to me?”
It felt like she had cheated on me, even though we had never defined what we were to each other.
She shoved against my chest.
“I have no reason to explain what happens in my private life to you. Please, stay out of it,” she murmured, then she walked away.
She dropped onto the couch and turned her back toward me.
I stood there helplessly.
A raw feeling of rage consumed me, but there was nothing I could do with it. I wanted to punch a wall, to release some of the pressure building inside me, but instead, I forced myself toward the bathroom.
I stepped inside and locked the door behind me.
I paced back and forth for several minutes, trying to figure out what the hell I was supposed to do.
I couldn’t let Jasper take her away from me, I’m not going to let that happened.
She was the first that person that made me feel the closest I felt to my mother. She was that one thing that finally belonged to me, and I refused to let anyone tear that away from me.
Not even my father’s happiness.
Since Dawn wasn’t going to listen to me, I would tell them the truth, I would tell our parents that I had feelings for Dawn.
That I loved her.
That there was something between us that neither of us could simply pretend didn’t exist.
No.
I was certain this was the right thing to do.
In fact, I should have done it before the wedding.
