Chapter 10: Confidence

Logan’s Point of View

“Dude, you need to slow down, or you might just tear your muscle.” Sonny, my annoying best friend, muttered, holding a bag of lay chips in his hands. “Did you have a fight with your father again?”

I ignored him, as I just kept slamming the ropes on the ground. I had been training with the battle ropes for almost an hour now, and my entire body was drenched with sweat.

My mind had never been so occupied before, and it pisses me off that the thing that was on my mind was that poor, arrogant scholarship freak. She must have a lot of nerve. Does she think being my stepsister would give her some sort of power over me?

She even had the gall to suspend me like that.

To think that I even felt bad for her, during the party, I shook my head, my upper arm still slamming the battle ropes against the floor, and I did some lunges, trying to ignore the burning sensation in my arms as I did it.

“He only loses focus like that when his dad is involved,” Henry muttered as he scrolled through his phone. I still ignored them, but he suddenly jolted up, his dark brown eyes snapped at me. “You’re not going to believe this.”

“What?” Sonny asked curiously, and the speed in my arms reduced slightly, somehow curious about this news.

“Come take a look at this.”

“Isn’t this the scholarship freak?” Sonny asked curiously, and I slammed the ropes against the ground, my grip loosening around them, and I grabbed the small towel, hung it around my neck, and strutted towards them.

I grabbed the phone from Henry’s hands, and watching the video, instead of complaining, the boys got up from their sitting position, and they gathered around me, watching the video of Dawn and Dorothy arguing in class.

“Wow!” Henry scoffed. “Did she just call you a coward?”

“Does that chick think Dorothy is protecting you?” Sonny asked. “She has no regard for her employer one bit. If I were you, I would make your father fire her, so she can have some manners.”

I forgot that they both thought that she works for my family now.

“I think this is highly disrespectful, and we should teach her a lesson.”

“Logan!” Coincidentally, I heard her voice approaching the school gym, and all our heads whipped in the direction of her voice. Dawn stormed inside the gym, holding her bags and books against her chest, and her eyes were narrowed at me.

If only looks can kill, I was certain that I would be sliced in half; her green eyes were like lethal poison.

“Who do you think you’re talking to?” Henry reached for her, but I grabbed the yoke of his shirt and yanked him back to me.

“Allow her.’

Her eyes scanned the three of us before they focused on me.

“You didn’t strike me as a spineless coward.” She spat angrily, and yes, she was definitely bolder than I remembered.

This was dad’s fault, but I needed to make things clear for her.

“Look at you, already drunk on the illusion of the power you think you have.” I pointed out. “But I suggest you tread carefully, because fire can still burn you no matter how pretty it is.”

“You promised you were going to delete the video, didn’t you?” She accused pointedly, and my frown deepened.

“And I did, what the hell are you talking about?” I asked in confusion.

“You are a coward, and a liar too?” She chuckled bitterly. “Youre lucky to have such a handsome face, people would find it difficult to believe that you’re such a rotten person underneath.”

“What the hell are you saying?” Sonny reached for her instead, grabbing her upper arms, and she violently twisted out of his grip.

“Don’t you fucking touch me!”

“Sonny, let her go,” I ordered almost immediately, and his fingers unwrapped from her arm. “Tell me in clear words what the fuck you mean, don’t go around making unclear statements.”

“Fine!” She snarled. ”You think sending the video to the principal would make me cower and reverse your suspension from the team?”

Her plump lips twisted into a sly smile.

“Guess what? That’s not going to work.”

My brows furrowed together. I remember deleting the video as soon as the date of the competition was announced. I don’t have it anymore. How could I have sent a video that I don’t have to the principal?

Oh wait!

There was one more person who had the video… Dorothy Whitemore.

Why did I forget about that? But I wasn’t about to start explaining myself to a peasant.

“Guess what, I’m the committee president, and I’m not going to allow some players to insult me.” He pointed at me, and I smirked. “You committed an offense, and I expect you to own up to it. You have until the end of this week to write a heartfelt apology letter to Johnson, or I will remove you from the competition.”

“Wait, what?” Sonny asked curiously, as he tried to grab her again.

“Sonny,” I called him and gave him the eye, warning him to keep his hands off her.

“You have no right to remove him from the competition.” Henry snapped. “You aren’t even supposed to suspend him. Fights happen all the time in a game, even Johnson knows this.”

“Why are you so fixated on Johnson?” Sonny chuckled. “Do you fuck him sometimes?"

She leaned forward and grabbed him by the tie.

“I dare you to say that again.” She growled. “So I can wipe that ugly smile off your fucking face.”

She stepped back, still glaring at me, and then, with a swift turn, she stormed out the same way she stormed in.

“What the hell, man?” Sonny turned back towards me. “I almost had her. Why did you stop me? You have gone soft on that chick; that’s why she has such confidence to come here to threaten you.”

“We are still on school property.” I reminded them. “And there are cameras everywhere, we don’t need to fall into the traps she has set up.”
