Chapter 46 The shadow and the shield
Chapter 46: The Shadow and the Shield (Elena’s POV)
I didn't stop running until I hit the bus stop. My leg was screaming in pain, a sharp, throbbing reminder that I wasn't built for sprinting. I sank onto the cold metal bench, my chest heaving. My lips still felt hot, stained by a kiss that shouldn't have happened.
"Elena! Wait up!"
I looked up and saw Maya running toward me. She was out of breath, her glasses sliding down her nose. She reached the bench and doubled over, clutching her knees.
"You... move fast... for a girl with a cane," she panted.
I didn't laugh. I couldn't. I just stared at my hands, which were still shaking. "He’s a jerk, Maya. A total, complete jerk."
Maya sat down next to me, wiping her forehead. "I saw him. I went back into the library after you ran out. I gave him a piece of my mind."
"You did?" I asked, looking at her in shock. "Maya, his father owns half the city. He could get you in trouble."
"Let him," Maya said, her voice firm. "I’m tired of being scared of people just because they have a high-limit credit card. He looked like he wanted to cry, honestly. But that doesn't excuse what he did. Was he... did he force you?"
"No," I whispered, looking away. "That’s the problem. For a second, I actually kissed him back. I forgot who he was. I forgot about Chloe and the video and the fact that his family treats mine like trash. I felt... I don't know. I felt like I belonged there."
Maya put her arm around my shoulder. It was a simple gesture, but it felt like a shield. "That’s how they get you, Elena. They make you feel special so you’ll forget the cage they’re building around you. But hey, look at the bright side. We have the flash drive, right? Chloe backed down."
"He has it," I said, leaning my head on Maya’s shoulder. "I told him to keep it. I just wanted to get out of there."
"Well, if he has any heart at all, he’ll turn it in," Maya said.
The bus pulled up, and we climbed on. For the first time in months, I didn't sit in the back alone. Maya sat right next to me, talking about her favorite movies and how much she hated the school cafeteria’s pizza. She was trying to distract me, and it was working. By the time I reached my stop, the weight on my chest felt a little lighter.
The next morning, the drama at Northview High reached a boiling point. As soon as Maya and I walked through the front doors, we felt the shift. People weren't just whispering; they were staring at the hallway monitors.
"What is going on?" I asked.
"Look," Maya said, pointing at the large screen near the trophy case.
It wasn't a video of me. It was a picture of Chloe. She was sitting in the back of her car, her face red and blotchy from crying. The caption underneath it read: Queen Chloe’s Crown Slips. Is the Merger Off?
"Someone leaked that she and Liam broke up," Maya whispered.
We headed to our lockers, but we were stopped by a wall of people. In the center of the crowd was Chloe. She wasn't crying anymore. She was wearing a dress that probably cost more than my mom’s shop, and her eyes were fixed on me like laser beams.
"You," Chloe said, her voice echoing in the hall.
"I have class, Chloe," I said, trying to walk past.
She stepped in front of me, her friends forming a semi-circle around us. "You think you won because he kissed you? You think a little library romance changes anything? My father spoke to the principal this morning. That History test? The one Liam is so worried about? If he doesn't get the highest grade in the class, his scholarship is gone. And since you're his tutor... if he fails, you're the one who gets the blame for 'distracting' him."
"That’s not how school works, Chloe," Maya said, stepping forward to stand beside me.
Chloe looked at Maya like she was a bug. "And who are you? The new maid? Stay out of grown-up talk, shadow."
"Her name is Maya," I said, my voice rising. "And she’s right. You’re just making up rules because you’re losing. Liam doesn't want you. Get over it."
The hallway went dead silent. Nobody talked to Chloe Miller like that.
Chloe stepped so close I could smell her minty breath. "He’ll want me when he realizes that being with you means living in the dirt. Enjoy your little week of studying, Elena. Because when Liam realizes he has to choose between a girl and his entire future, he’s not going to choose the girl with the limp."
She turned and walked away, her clique following her like a flock of birds.
Maya let out a breath I didn't know she was holding. "Wow. She is really, really mean."
"She’s desperate," I said, but inside, my heart was sinking. Chloe was right about one thing. Liam was a Vance. He loved the spotlight. He loved being the King. Could he really handle being a regular person?
We went to History class, and the tension was even worse. Mr. Henderson was in a foul mood. He spent the whole hour pacing the room, talking about how "integrity is dead" and how he wouldn't tolerate any funny business on the midterm.
Liam was sitting in his usual seat. He looked exhausted. There were dark circles under his eyes, and he didn't look at Chloe once. He kept stealing glances at me, but I refused to meet his eyes. I kept my focus on Maya, who was busy taking notes on a bright pink legal pad.
After class, as we were packing up, Maya nudged me. "He's coming over."
I looked up. Liam was standing by my desk.
"Elena, can we talk? Please?" he asked.
Maya stood up, crossing her arms. "She doesn't want to talk to you, Vance. You heard her yesterday."
"Maya, it’s okay," I said softly. I looked at Liam. "Five minutes. Maya, wait for me at the library?"
Maya looked at Liam, then at me. "Five minutes. I’m timing it." She gave Liam a warning look and walked out.
"She’s tough," Liam said, a small, tired smile touching his lips.
"She’s my friend," I said. "Something you wouldn't know much about. Your friends just film people and laugh."
Liam winced. "Look, about the kiss... and about what I said. I meant it. All of it. I gave the drive back to Henderson. I told him I found it on the floor. He didn't ask questions, but he knows I was the one who returned it."
"And Chloe?" I asked.
"We’re done. For real this time. My father is furious. He’s already threatened to take my car keys and my credit cards. I’m basically grounded in a mansion."
"Is that supposed to make me feel sorry for you?" I asked, grabbing my bag. "You’re still in a mansion, Liam. I’m still in a basement."
"I don't want you to feel sorry for me," he said, stepping closer. The chemistry was still there, a heavy pull that made my skin tingle. "I want you to help me. Not because you have to, but because I want to prove to you that I can pass this test on my own. I want to show you I’m more than just a name."
I looked at him, searching his face. He looked sincere, but I had been burned so many times.
"One week, Liam," I said. "We study in the library. In the open. No more hiding in corners. No more kissing. If you pass, you keep your hockey. If you fail... then Chloe was right, and we’re both done."
"Deal," he said.
As I walked out of the classroom to find Maya, I felt a strange mix of hope and fear. I was letting him back in, even if it was just for a week.
I found Maya waiting by the lockers. She had two sodas in her hand.
"So?" she asked, handing me one. "What’s the verdict? Is he still a jerk?"
"He’s a jerk who needs to pass History," I said, taking a sip. "We’re studying. Properly this time."
Maya smiled and bumped her shoulder against mine. "Well, then we better get to work. If he’s going to be a man, he’s going to need the best tutors in the school. And that’s us."
I smiled back. For the first time since I started at Northview, I didn't feel like a ghost. I had a friend, I had a plan, and for better or worse, I had the King of Northview working for me.
