Chapter 59: Because I Missed You
I slowly opened my eyes.
"What an unexpected pleasure," I said. "How come Mr. Vale remembers to call me? Do you miss me?"
The other end went silent again.
Caspian didn't answer.
"Ah, so you don't miss me after all." I said. "Then does Mr. Vale have something to tell me?"
After a moment, Caspian said, "Let you sleep early."
I said, "Wake someone up just to tell them to sleep early... Mr. Vale is truly thoughtful."
"I won't argue with you anymore," Caspian said. "Go to sleep."
"No!" I suddenly stopped him from hanging up. "Mr. Vale's voice is nice. I want to listen a little longer, can't I?"
Caspian paused, then asked again, "Aren't you sleeping?"
I said, "Even though Mr. Vale doesn't want me, I miss you... If only you were by my side right now."
My reckless confession made Caspian go silent again, and after a while, he spoke again. "Did something happen?"
"Why do you always ask me that?" I said. "Nothing happened, nothing at all... I just miss you, can't I?"
I shifted position and lay down on the sofa, then asked, "When will you be back?"
"The day after tomorrow."
"That's so far away." I said. "If I'd known, I would've gone with you..."
Just as I finished speaking, I suddenly heard someone calling him on the other end.
"Are you still busy?" I asked.
"Yeah," Caspian answered.
"Then I won't disturb you." I said. "I'll go to sleep. Good night."
I took the initiative to hang up, and when I was about to toss my phone aside, I remembered to mute it again.
Then, in that very awkward position, I just fell asleep on the sofa.
The next day, I woke up on the sofa with a sore back, and finally got up grimacing, feeling completely useless.
There was nothing here, so I walked to the bathroom and could only wash my face with my hands.
After coming out, I decided to order takeout and buy some things.
Then I picked up my phone and saw a dozen missed calls, which made me frown.
Looking through the call log, the calls came from several investment banks that had rejected me before, as well as William Turner, Harrison, and others who'd left me.
Looking at that list, I just felt afraid.
Not to mention the others, William Turner and Harrison were undoubtedly Damien's people. They were even candidates he'd promised me to meet and greet after I agreed to meet Mrs. Montgomery.
Now these people were coming to contact me, which was undoubtedly Damien's instruction.
What did he want to do? Did he feel that he didn't succeed last night, so he was using these people to give me some benefits to lure me into doing it?
What if I refused?
What would Damien do to me?
As I was thinking this, William Turner's call suddenly came through again.
"Niece, you finally answered the phone?" William Turner breathed a sigh of relief on the other end. "Do you remember the project we talked about before? I've been thinking recently, your father and I are old friends. How could I let your Quinn Industries make so much profit to continue the project? So I've thought it through clearly. Let's follow the previous contract, and the project will start tomorrow. How about it?"
I immediately hung up, then I sent Lucas a message and just turned off my phone.
That day, I busied myself around my apartment.
I went out to buy a lot of daily necessities, and when I got back, I cleaned inside and out. I was busy all day before I finally got the place looking livable.
After showering again, I finally realized I was hungry, and when I picked up my phone to order takeout, I remembered that I'd had my phone off all day.
After restarting it, all kinds of useful and useless messages flooded in.
I was too lazy to look at them, and right now I just wanted to find something to eat, but I didn't expect that as soon as I opened the takeout app, another call came in.
It was Grayson.
I quickly answered.
Grayson breathed a sigh of relief on the other end. "Miss Quinn, your phone has finally connected. Where are you?"
"I'm at home," I said. "Is something wrong?"
"Home?" Grayson's voice sounded full of doubt. "There's no one at the Quinn house. Are you inside?"
I was also a little confused. When I realized, I couldn't help but say, "Are you in front of my family home?"
"Yeah," Grayson answered.
"What about him?"
Half an hour later, my apartment doorbell rang.
When the door opened, I threw myself straight into Caspian's arms outside the door, hugging his neck tightly and burying my face in his shoulder.
Caspian's movements seemed to freeze for a moment, then he carried me through the door and closed it behind him.
I stayed buried in his embrace and let him move, and after a long time, I finally spoke with a pout. "Didn't you say you wouldn't be back until tomorrow?"
Caspian looked down at the top of my head, his eyes deep, and didn't say a word.
I quickly raised my head to look at him, my eyes clear and smiling. "Did you know I missed you, so you came back early to keep me company?"
Caspian looked at me for a moment, then raised his eyes to look at the apartment in front of him.
The hundred-square-meter place had no sense of life yet, and the living room and dining room weren't very big, let alone the entrance.
When I was about to pull him further into the house, Caspian paused for a moment, then took off his leather shoes and placed them neatly in front of the shoe cabinet, only wearing his black socks on the floor.
"Oh, I forgot to buy a pair of men's slippers when I went shopping today." I patted my head, then picked up my phone again. "Let me have takeout deliver a pair."
As I spoke, I clicked on the takeout app and said, "There are only a few small regular supermarkets around here, and you can only buy ordinary slippers. Will you wear them?"
"No need," Caspian said. "I'll only stay for a bit, not long."
I suddenly stopped and looked up at him. "You still have to go to the neighboring city, don't you?"
"Yeah."
"I thought you could stay..." I stopped, didn't continue, and when I looked at him again, my eyes were still blinking. "Then... could it be you really came back to see me?"
Our eyes met, and there was no answer in Caspian's eyes.
"I'll just take it as that." I looked away, continued lighting up my phone, and said, "You still need to buy a pair of slippers. If you come in the future, you can still use them."
I said this and quickly placed the order.
However, as soon as I put down my phone, Caspian's phone rang on the other side.
He took out his phone, and I clearly saw Grayson's name displayed on the screen.
Caspian answered.
"Mr. Vale, it's almost time," Grayson said on the other end.
"Understood."
Caspian only answered with those three words.
As he hung up, I suddenly stepped into his embrace again.
Caspian's phone wasn't put away yet, but he just looked at me quietly.
"It's nothing, I just wanted to hug you. Mr. Vale's arms are so comfortable..." I rubbed against his embrace, and after a moment of silence, I obediently came down. "After the hug, you can go in a hurry. Don't be late."
I pulled him up from the sofa and walked him to the door.
"Mr. Vale, take care." I leaned against the entrance and looked at him with a smile.
Caspian stood next to his leather shoes and looked at me again. "Is there really nothing you want to tell me?"
I tilted my head and thought for a moment, then said, "Come back early tomorrow?"
Caspian lowered his head and looked at me for a long time, and finally answered in a low voice, "Okay."
Down in the underground parking lot, Grayson had already started the car and was waiting for him.
Caspian got in the car. Grayson wanted to ask if something was wrong with Vera, but when he saw Caspian close his eyes as soon as he got in, he immediately decided to keep his mouth shut.
As soon as the car drove out of the basement and onto the road, a delivery driver on an electric bike quickly passed in front of the car in reverse.
Grayson couldn't help but grumble and complain, and as he continued past the community entrance, he heard the delivery driver loudly report to the security guard, "Building three, unit one, seventh floor!"
In the back seat, Caspian suddenly opened his eyes.
When I received the call from the delivery driver, I immediately asked him to leave the items at the door, and the driver agreed.
However, two minutes later, the doorbell suddenly rang again.
I stepped forward with some doubt and peered out through the peephole.
Then I opened the door again, my eyes clear, looking quietly at the person standing outside.
"Did Mr. Vale forget something?" I asked.
Caspian stepped inside, closed the door with a bang, and locked both of us in the small entrance space.
I hadn't reacted yet, and in one breath, I was already overwhelmed by the man's hot breath.
Immediately after, I was pushed back against the door.
In just one breath, I was completely overwhelmed by the man's hot breath.
