Chapter 47: The Keeper’s Choice
The wind howled low across the barren plateau, carrying whispers like fragments of forgotten prayers. The healer tightened her cloak against the chill, her gaze fixed on the crumbling ruins before her. This was where the map had led them the resting place of the Keeper of Lost Truths.
The prince walked beside her, his breath uneven, each step a struggle against the curse gnawing at his veins. His once-strong frame looked worn, the black lines crawling higher along his neck. Yet his eyes, fierce and unyielding, did not falter.
They had come too far to turn back.
The air inside the ruins was different thick, heavy, as though time itself resisted their intrusion. At the heart of the crumbled temple, a stone dais glimmered faintly with runes. And there, seated upon a throne of bone and obsidian, was a figure draped in tattered robes. His face was obscured, his voice little more than a sigh carried on the air.
“I have waited,” the Keeper said, his tone like dry leaves scraping stone. “Blood of the cursed line, and the healer who binds fate to flesh. You have walked the path as foretold.”
The healer’s hand went instinctively to the prince’s arm. “You know how to end this,” she said firmly. “Tell us.”
The Keeper’s head tilted, as if amused by her defiance. “To end it is to pay the debt written in your blood. The curse is no accident it is judgment, wrought upon a king who defied the ancient covenant. Every son born to his line carries the weight of his rebellion.”
The prince clenched his fists. “And now you mean to make me pay for the sins of a man dead for centuries?”
“Not just you,” the Keeper whispered. His skeletal hand lifted, pointing to the healer. “One choice remains. Either the cursed bloodline must be cut your death sealing the curse forever or the curse will spread, devouring the kingdom until not even stone remains. Unless…” His voice trailed, heavy with unspoken cruelty.
The healer stepped forward, her voice trembling but strong. “Unless what?”
“Unless she takes the burden into herself,” the Keeper said. His hidden face turned toward her. “The healer’s bond is strong enough. Her sacrifice could siphon the curse, sparing the kingdom and sparing the prince… but at a cost. Her life will not end but it will no longer be hers. She will be bound to shadow, half in this world, half in the next. A living tether to what should never be.”
Silence filled the chamber.
The prince shook his head violently. “No. I won’t allow it.” His voice cracked, raw with fury. “She has given enough. If blood must be paid, let it be mine.”
The healer turned to him, heart hammering. She could see the storm raging behind his eyes. “And leave me to live with your death? No. That is not the life I choose.”
Their words tangled in grief, but the Keeper only watched, patient and eternal.
“Every path demands sacrifice,” he murmured. “You cannot walk away untouched.”
The healer’s chest rose and fell with quick breaths. She had always known this journey would end with blood. What she had not expected was that the choice would be hers. She could see it now the prince’s death freeing the kingdom but leaving her shattered, or her own half-existence damning her to shadows but keeping him alive.
And yet, in the quiet corners of her heart, she already knew her decision.
The prince grasped her shoulders, pulling her close, his voice a broken plea. “Don’t. Don’t even think it. You have healed me, carried me, fought beside me. You gave me hope when I was nothing but a vessel for darkness. I would rather die a thousand times than see you chained to this curse.”
She placed her hand against his chest, feeling the frantic drum of his heart. “And I would rather lose myself than lose you. You don’t see it, do you? You are more than a cursed prince. You are the man I chose. And I will not watch you fade.”
His breath caught, his forehead pressed against hers. For a moment, the ruins, the Keeper, the curse all of it fell away, leaving only the two of them.
But the Keeper’s voice cut through the silence. “The time draws near. The curse awakens fully with each breath. Decide.”
The healer closed her eyes. The weight of destiny pressed upon her, crushing yet clear. She would bear it. She had sworn to heal, no matter the wound. Even if the wound was herself.
But before she could speak the choice aloud, the ground shuddered. From the shadows of the ruined temple, a flicker of movement stirred an intruder, cloaked and watching. The healer’s breath hitched. They were not alone.
The prince’s sword was out in a heartbeat, steel gleaming in the flickering rune-light. The shadowed figure stepped forward, and the healer recognized him instantly.
One of their own.
The ally who had guided them here, who had sworn loyalty to the crown his eyes now glowed with the sickly red of the curse.
The Keeper’s sigh echoed through the chamber. “Ah. The Betrayer’s hand has been revealed.”
The healer’s stomach dropped. The choice they faced was dire enough, but betrayal in their midst threatened to tear the fragile path apart before it could even be walked.
The prince tightened his grip on his blade, his jaw set. “Then there will be no more waiting.” His eyes burned with both fury and desperation. “Keeper or no Keeper, I will fight for her, and for this kingdom.”
The healer stood beside him, shoulders squared, though her heart quaked with the choice looming like a blade above her head.
The Keeper’s final words drifted like ash on the air:
“One path to life, one path to death, and one path to shadow. Choose quickly… for the storm gathers, and soon, the curse will decide for you.”
