Chapter 195: The Last Inch Of Stone

The second pass hits before anyone can take a full breathe and it is already inside Rhydan when I understand we are losing.

Rhydan is in front of me, body locked against mine, one arm braced back around my waist like he can keep me inside his ribs by force alone. The colorless pressure climbs his spine in hard waves. I feel every one of them through the link... his shoulders seizing... his breath turning sharp... his knees starting to buckle while he still tries to stay upright for me.

"Vey..."

His mouth is close to my ear, voice torn down to grit.

"I am here."

"Do not let go of me."

"I will not."

Around us, the courtyard is a ruin of people who can still see and cannot move. Cassian is down on his side near the arch, eyes open, jaw clenched so hard a muscle jumps in his cheek. Petra is frozen against the gallery wall with one hand still half-raised. Adler lies where he fell. Elara’s light is dead in her open palms. Students stare from locked bodies, tears running sideways into their hair.

The gray cloaks move through them like the fallen are furniture.

Rine walks at the center.

She does not hurry. She does not glance at the bleeding or the broken. Her pale eyes are fixed on me alone, and every step she takes across the cracked stones makes the air heavier, thicker, harder to pull into my lungs.

Rhydan snarls and forces one foot forward.

The cage answers by crushing harder. Blood runs from his nose. Gold flickers wildly in his eyes and almost dies. Through the fragment in my chest, I feel his wolf screaming and his dragon thrashing and both of them slamming against the hold like beasts in a too-small crate.

"Stay behind me," he forces out.

"There is no behind left," I whisper.

Because there is not.

There is only Rine coming, and the grey cloaks closing the courtyard into a fist, and the people we love stuck awake inside stone bodies while the morning keeps getting brighter like it does not care.

Corvyn drags herself into Rine’s path on her knees.

One arm is ruined. Her mouth is full of blood. She looks like she has already died once and refused to file the paperwork.

But Corvyn is not giving up. Corvyn never gives up, even when it feels like she's at the point of death.

And when she lifts her unbroken hand, white light rips out of her chest in a raw, shaking sheet and slams up between us and Rine.

Rine's pressure cuts for one second.

Air returns in a violent rush. Rhydan gasps like a drowning man. My vision clears enough to see Corvyn’s light already turning pink at the edges... then red... burning on her own life.

"Corvyn!" My voice breaks. "Stop! You will kill yourself!"

She does not look at me.

She is looking at Rine.

"You do not get them," Corvyn spits, blood running down her chin. "You do not get my school. You do not get any of my children."

Rine’s face barely moves.

"Still so dramatic, Nadire."

She thrusts her hand forward and black-violet force punches through Corvyn’s white wall like paper. The shield explodes into sparks and Corvyn is thrown back across the stones so hard her body leaves a smear, then rolls and stops near Torren’s boots with her eyes half open and empty of fight.

"Corvyn!"

Rhydan lunges, but Torren is already moving.

He breaks out of the last of the lock with a roar that shakes the broken wall, and he throws his whole body over us as Rine’s follow-up strike comes down.

Heat... weight... the smell of burning fabric and flesh... Torren takes the hit across his shoulders and back with a sound I will hear for the rest of my life.

"Dad...!"

Rhydan’s scream tears through the link so hard I almost black out. He catches Torren as he collapses, the three of us going down hard on the gate stones, Torren’s blood hot on Rhydan’s hands, on Rhydan’s neck, and some on me still holding on to Rhydan.

"Stay down..." Torren’s voice is a wet scrape. His eyes find Rhydan, then me. "Hold... her..."

"Dad... Dad, look at me. Please. Please..."

Rhydan is shaking so violently his teeth chatter. He presses his forehead to Torren’s, gold light sputtering in his eyes, pure panic pouring through our bond in a flood I cannot block. I grab Rhydan’s sleeve, then Torren’s coat, trying to hold both of them in the world by hand alone.

Rine steps over Corvyn without looking down.

The grey cloaks fan out behind her until every exit is gray cloth and silver thread. No path back into the school... no path sideways... only Rine, and the dark shape building between her raised hands.

From the archway, Zael drags his face up off the stone, blood running freely from both nostrils.

"Veyra!" His voice is destroyed. "Third pass... that is the Eternal Binding... do you hear me? Not a freeze... a soul-cage! She turns her wrist and your frequency locks into stone for as long as the stone exists! You stay awake in the dark... forever... while she wears what is left!"

Rhydan hears it.

I feel the exact second the meaning lands in him. His grief for Torren does not shrink... it hardens into something feral. But he drops his father’s hand... only long enough to grab me with both arms and drag me into his chest, curling his body around mine on the broken stones like he can hide me inside his bones.

"No." His mouth is against my forehead, my cheek, my mouth. "No, no, no. She does not get you. Do you understand me? I will die right here. I will die right here before she puts you in stone."

"Rhydan..."

"I love you, Vey." He says it like a wound tearing open. "I love you. I do not care about the lie. I do not care about Zael. I do not care about any of it. I love you, Veyra. Stay with me. Please, stay with me."

The piece of him inside my chest detonates into pure heat.

Tears spill out of me hard and fast. I clutch the back of his jacket, fistfuls of ruined black fabric, and for one second there is no High Council and no courtyard and no dying morning. There is only his blood under my palms and his love crashing through the link so loud it drowns even fear.

Then Rine’s shadow falls across us.

"How sweet," she says. "Say it again while you can still move your mouths."

The dark shape between her hands tightens, thickens, becomes a ring of ancient pressure that makes my ears ring and my stomach turn. Around the courtyard, frozen students make tiny broken sounds that never become words. Petra’s open eyes shine with tears she cannot wipe. Cassian’s throat works around a roar he cannot free.

Rhydan tries to rise over me and cannot fully stand. His thigh is still bleeding. His ribs are wrong. His body is a map of every hit he took for other people.

But he still puts his chest over my heart.

"Take me," he snarls up at Rine. "You want a lock? You want a scapegoat? Take me."

Rine almost smiles.

"I will take both."

Her wrists begin the final turn.

I stop looking at her.

Without thinking, I shove my hands flat to the cracked stone beneath us and reach down with everything I have left... the pale light in my bones, the living piece of Rhydan screaming under my sternum, the fierce heat of my mother’s ring biting into my finger like a hand that will not let go. I pour all of it into the earth in one raw, wordless plea.

Not a spell...

A call.

Down through broken courtyard tile... through foundation... through the black under Northveil.

And I do not hit static this time...

I hit heat... I hit scale... I hit the massive bronze plane of a snout pressed so hard into the underside of the rock that the stone between us is only a thin dying skin.

The dragon is right there. Not sleeping... not waiting... jammed upward through a self-made wound in the world, body coiled in wrecked granite, forehead bruising heaven from below.

For hours, it has been breaking itself against the earth while we fought blind above it.

My light touches it.

Rhydan’s fragment touches it.

The frequency from my mother’s ring hits it like approval.

Then the golden eyes under the stone open against my palm.

Now, I push, sobbing into the dark. Please... now...

Above us, Rine completes the turn of her hands.

"Be bound..."

And the last inch of stone between me above and the dragon below gives way with a rupturing sound like the world ripping itself apart.
