Chapter 130 Someone Wants to See You
It wasn't just because they'd gotten familiar with Duncan and the others recently - it was because nobody could stand what Holden had said.
That's right, they came to the Eastern battlefield risking their lives to protect the Soth Empire's territory from being taken by the Viller Empire. But what about Holden? He actually wanted them to go to the Drogo Mountains. Sure, giving your life for your beloved country is one thing, but for a woman - and one who constantly put down Knight Commander Anne - why should they?
Just because she was Holden's wife? Then why didn't he go himself! Everyone knew Holden had dumped his wife for another woman. Nobody respected him.
Besides, if that woman hadn't spread rumors before, Knight Commander Anne wouldn't have suffered all those cold stares and suspicions for nothing. Later she refused to admit defeat to Anne, and even disobeyed military orders on the battlefield, almost affecting the entire offensive!
Everyone here came for military achievements, everyone wanted to win and go home to reunite with their families. If Candy really messed things up and they lost this battle, how many brothers would die? How many more years would they have to suffer here?
So not only did they not feel sorry for Holden, they thought this beating was too light!
Too bad Knight Commander Anne didn't order them to join in, otherwise they really wanted to get some hits in too.
Suddenly, a male voice came from nearby, "Alright, stop."
Anne turned at the sound and saw Friedel walking over.
Duncan and Morris looked disdainfully at Holden on the ground, but still stopped and stepped aside. However, they kept watching Friedel - if he spoke up for Holden, they wouldn't be polite!
Holden thought Friedel came to save him, but Friedel walked right up to Anne without even glancing at him on the ground. "Someone's looking for you."
Anne raised an eyebrow. Friedel had disappeared for several days and suddenly came back with this news - it probably wasn't anyone simple. "Who?"
"People from Zotfort."
At this, Holden on the ground trembled violently. "Why would Zotfort want her? Did this woman work with them to capture Candy for revenge?"
"I knew it, I knew it! Anne is so vicious - you just hate that Candy took me from you, how could you do such a thing!"
Duncan wanted to punch him again, but Friedel raised his hand, signaling him to stay calm. "If you can't use your brain, you can donate it to a doctor for research instead of making a fool of yourself here."
Anne was also puzzled. "Zotfort's people specifically asked for me?"
Although she was suspicious of Zotfort's motives, thinking it over, if this was related to Candy, it would definitely involve the Virlet family tragedy.
At this thought, Anne's eyes reddened slightly. She pressed her lips together - she had to go to this meeting.
Friedel could tell what Anne was thinking. He nodded reassuringly, "Yes, someone wants to see you about something very important."
Anne wasn't sure if Friedel had spent these past few days away from camp working on this, but she still gave him a grateful look. "Where's the meeting place?"
"Near the Drogo Mountains, toward the Sigma Wilderness direction."
Anne was startled. "Inside Soth Empire territory?"
Friedel nodded. "Our troops will also be stationed around the area to prevent any suspicious moves. I'll go with you too."
Hearing this, Holden on the ground struggled to get up despite his injuries. "I... I want to go too! I want to ask about Candy!"
Friedel glanced at Holden. "Then go."
But Anne had no time to bother with Holden anymore. After confirming with Friedel that the Ivy Knights didn't need to stand guard, she told the knights to return to their tents to rest, then hurried off with Cynthia and the others, along with Friedel, to meet the people from Zotfort.
By the time the group rushed to the destination, a night had passed. The dim morning light fell on this land, and Anne quickly spotted the Zotfort soldiers' formation.
At the front, besides Frol, there was someone completely covered by a cloak and wearing a mask.
Facing Frol, Anne didn't know what emotions she should feel. It was Friedel who led her forward, and after a few steps he turned back. "Except for Anne and Holden, everyone else stays here."
Anne pressed her lips together and saw that the soldiers on the other side hadn't moved either - only Frol and the mysterious person walked forward.
Before getting close, Holden spoke first. "Where's Candy?"
Frol glanced at the disheveled Holden. "You'll see her soon enough. It's not your turn to speak now. Shut up."
"You...!"
"Say one more word and that woman stays another day."
The veins on Holden's forehead throbbed, but he didn't dare say more. He could only glare fiercely at Frol, who wasn't looking at him but was watching Anne with appreciation.
Anne was beautiful - just looking at her face, she had a delicate and pure beauty. It was hard to imagine that this girl not yet twenty would be the decisive killing machine on the battlefield called Skoda reborn, much less that after participating in just a few battles, she could be promoted to Knight Commander of the Ivy Knights.
Even Skoda back then hadn't been promoted this fast.
"Anne Virlet, you're excellent." Frol spoke, his gaze growing heavy. "Duke Skoda said he had a perfect heir - I didn't expect it to be his daughter."
Anne nodded politely. "General Frol is also worthy of being Duke Clapton's successor."
Frol's eyes dimmed, and the mysterious person beside him sighed. "Miss Anne, I'm the one who wants to talk to you."
Anne was startled. The voice was clearly a woman's. She turned to look as the mysterious person removed her mask, revealing a beautiful face. "I'm Manlis Clapton, born of the Burns family. I think you've investigated me, right?"
Holden was still in a confused state - he wasn't particularly familiar with Soth Empire's nobles, let alone nobles from other countries. But Anne was clearly stunned. Of course she knew the Burns family - it was one of the three most prestigious noble families in Zotfort. The current Queen of Zotfort came from this family, which proved its status and position.
And when Manlis introduced herself, she used the surname Clapton. Looking at Frol standing beside her, Anne immediately understood - this woman was the wife of Duke Clapton who had died in a duel with her father, and also the mother of the child killed by Candy.
