Chapter 10: Two Steps Closer

The marble floors of the Crown Regency Hotel shimmered under the brilliance of opulent chandeliers. Gold-framed mirrors reflected the grandeur of the charity gala organized by Sinclair Enterprises, turning the ballroom into a kaleidoscope of elegance, power, and carefully practiced smiles. Waiters in crisp uniforms floated around with flutes of champagne, soft jazz drifted from the string quartet near the dais, and elite guests from the city’s highest rungs mingled over glittering conversation.

At the center of it all was Eve.

With her hair swept into a low, sleek bun and a midnight-blue silk gown that shimmered like liquid ink with every step, she moved like she belonged. Confident. Controlled. Dangerous.

Sienna watched her from across the ballroom.

She was dressed in a pearl-white power suit — understated yet commanding — with diamond studs at her ears and a Cartier watch strapped tight to her wrist. She had spent years building the reputation of Sinclair Enterprises, shaping it into a legacy her family could be proud of.

And tonight, all eyes were on someone else.

Eve had planned every inch of this gala, a last-minute suggestion that the board had initially rejected — until she presented a budget, sponsors, and guest list that even the marketing director had applauded. Sienna had given a reluctant nod. Now she regretted it.

At the corner table, members of the board murmured their praises.

“She’s got initiative,” one said.

“Sharp instincts,” another nodded.

“I haven’t seen Daniel this engaged in months.”

That last comment hit her like a slap.

Sienna’s eyes flicked to her husband.

Daniel stood near the stage, laughing at something Eve said. He was relaxed, charming in a way Sienna hadn’t seen in years. His hand rested casually on Eve’s lower back as they conversed with a group of investors, the kind of intimate gesture that could easily be dismissed — unless you were looking for it.

And Sienna was looking.

She took a slow sip of her champagne, her expression unreadable. The burn of jealousy, sharp and sudden, caught her off guard. She wasn’t the type to break — not in public, not even in private — but something inside her stirred uncomfortably.

Not rage. Not quite heartbreak.

Warning.

A while later, Daniel took the stage, a flute of champagne in hand. The crowd quieted.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he began, his voice smooth and charismatic, “thank you for being here tonight to support a cause that’s close to Sinclair Enterprises’ heart — education access for underprivileged youth.”

He continued with practiced elegance, thanking donors and board members.

“And before I finish,” he added with a smile, “I want to take a moment to acknowledge someone new in our family… someone who’s poured her heart into this evening and left an impression on all of us. Our rising star, Eve.”

A ripple of applause.

Eve blushed modestly, but her eyes glittered as she dipped her head, locking eyes with Daniel for a beat too long.

Sienna didn’t clap.

An hour later…

Outside on the balcony, Sienna stood alone, the cool night air brushing against her bare shoulders. The laughter and music inside felt distant — a glass wall between her and the life she once knew.

She didn’t want to admit what she’d seen, or worse, felt.

Daniel’s smile had faded from her life years ago — lost somewhere between late nights at the office and colder silences at the dinner table. They no longer fought. They no longer talked. Their marriage had become an elegant facade — unbroken, but hollow.

Now someone else was filling those spaces.

She glanced through the balcony doors into the lounge — and froze.

There they were.

Eve and Daniel.

Seated on the plush velvet couch, their bodies angled toward each other. Eve’s hand rested lightly on his wrist as she laughed. Daniel leaned in, relaxed, at ease, as if he had finally exhaled after years of holding his breath.

A flicker of pain cut through Sienna.

She wasn’t imagining it.

Something was growing between them.

Meanwhile…

Across the country, Noah adjusted his seatbelt on a red-eye flight, staring at his laptop screen as turbulence gently rocked the aircraft.

He had spent the past week combing through public records, digital footprints, and surveillance footage — and one thing was now glaringly obvious.

Eve wasn’t Eve.

The name she gave the hospital was fake. The number on her admission forms didn’t exist. Her listed emergency contact was disconnected. There were no tax records. No school enrollments. No hometown address that matched her identity.

Just… a shadow.

He clicked on the vendor footage from the gala setup. There it was — she excused herself after a call, stepped outside, and pulled out a phone from a pocket inside her coat.

A different phone.

Not the one he had seen on her desk.

Noah narrowed his eyes, took a screenshot, and saved it to his encrypted drive.

Something was off. Very off.

He glanced at his boarding pass — he was about to land in the town she claimed was hers. If anyone knew her real past, he’d find them.

Back at the estate…

The gala had ended, the guests gone, and the staff retreated for the night.

The house was silent, save for the distant ticking of a grandfather clock. Eve padded into her room, slipping off her heels and placing them neatly by her vanity.

She walked to her closet, pushed aside a row of coats, and reached behind the safe box installed on the back panel.

She pulled out a velvet pouch.

From it, a thin black phone.

Not the one she used for work. Not the one Daniel had seen.

She powered it on.

The screen lit up instantly. One unread message.

Unknown Number

Status update?

Her lips curled into a faint smirk as she typed quickly, fingers tapping with precision.

To: Unknown

Phase One complete.

She stared at her reflection in the mirror — dark eyes shining with the gleam of vengeance, lips painted the color of blood, and a calmness that only came from control.

This house.

This man.

This empire.

They had taken everything from her.

And now, she was two steps closer to taking it all back.

Chapter Hook:

Eve walks into her room, opens her secret phone, and texts: “Phase One complete.”
