Chapter 222: Kodi's First Summer
Chapter Two Hundred and Twenty-Two
Kofi's First Summer
Kofi's geological node entered its second year of the fifth season quality in the summer of the tenth year, which was the first summer that the fifth season in the Kofi node had been established long enough to show what the second year of the fifth season produced in a geological node that had been built through twelve years of a convergent's daily contact rather than through the more formal mechanisms of the foundational work.
The second year of the fifth season in the Kofi node was different from the first year in the way that all second years of the fifth season were different from their first — richer, the accumulated summer becoming more deeply permanent, the generative quality deepening. But the Kofi node's second year of the fifth season had a quality that the Boston garden's second year of the fifth season had not had, and the quality was specific to how the Kofi node had been built.
The Kofi node had been built through the simultaneous reading-and-responding that was the specific quality of Kofi's gift — the wall offering and the gift receiving and giving back in the same moment, the dialogue rather than the sequential reading-then-giving. Twelve years of that dialogue had produced a geological node in which the gift's presence was not the gift's organizing presence settling into a material over time. It was the gift's dialogic presence — the quality of a material and a gift in genuine conversation, each responding to the other, building the node through the quality of the conversation rather than the quality of the gift's spring given into a passive receiver.
The second year of the Kofi node's fifth season expressed this dialogic quality with the specific richness of something that had been in genuine conversation for thirteen years total — twelve years of the intuitive dialogue before formal understanding and one year of the formal dialogue after. The accumulated summers of the Kofi node's fifth season were not the accumulated summers of the gift's spring given into the material. They were the accumulated summers of the gift and the material giving to each other in the specific quality of genuine dialogue.
Ama noticed it first. She was in Accra for the summer, working in the Ghana sanctuary every morning and visiting the Kofi node every afternoon, and she read the dialogic quality with the dual gift's experiential sensitivity and sent through the network to Lily the quality of what she had found.
The experiential quality of the Kofi node's fifth season was different from the experiential quality of the Boston garden's fifth season or Eleanor's Vermont garden's fifth season or any fifth season Ama had read. The other fifth seasons had the quality of the gift's summer received and held by the material. The Kofi node had the quality of two things that had been in genuine dialogue for thirteen years each giving the other what it needed and each receiving what the other gave. The Kofi node's accumulated summer was both the gift's summer and the material's summer simultaneously.
Lily received Ama's communication and sat with it for a long time.
She thought: the Kofi node is a new kind of node. Not the foundational work's organized spring giving summer to a material. Not the geological formation drawing convergent through the gift's geological preparation. The dialogic node. A node built through thirteen years of genuine conversation between a gift and a material, each building the other, each giving the other what it needed to be more fully itself.
She thought: the gift builds what the gift builds through whatever mechanism is available. The geological mechanism. The foundational work mechanism. The living succession mechanism. And now the dialogic mechanism — the gift and a specific material in genuine conversation over a sustained period, building a node through the conversation itself rather than through any of the other mechanisms.
She thought: Kofi's gift is the dialogic gift. His specific structural convergence is structured to read and respond simultaneously — to be in genuine dialogue with the materials he contacts. The dialogic gift produces the dialogic node. The gift's mechanism matched to the specific person who carries it.
She called Kofi through the network.
He answered with the quality he always had in the network communication — direct, attentive, the gift operating at the surface level through the connection.
She told him what Ama had found in the Kofi node's second year of the fifth season. The dialogic quality. The accumulated summers of two things giving each other what they needed. He listened with the full quality of his attention.
"The wall and I have been giving each other what we needed for thirteen years," he said when she finished. "I knew this, in some way. I knew the wall was not passive. I knew we were in conversation. I did not know the conversation had a name or a quality that the archive could hold." He was quiet for a moment. "The dialogic node."
"Yes," she said.
"What does the dialogic node produce that the other kinds of nodes do not produce?" he asked.
She thought about the experiential quality that Ama had described — the two accumulated summers, the gift's and the material's, simultaneously present. "The world's summer," she said slowly. "The gift's summer and the material's summer. In the dialogic node, both are present simultaneously. The gift's spring gives summer to the material and the material's receiving gives summer back to the gift. Both summers accumulate in the dialogic node. Both are permanently present in the fifth season." She paused. "The other nodes have the gift's summer permanently present in the material. The dialogic node has both summers permanently present. Both the gift's abundance and the material's abundance. The giving and the receiving both produce summer."
Kofi was quiet for a long moment. "The wall is glad," he said finally. "I have always known this. The wall is glad of the conversation. The wall's gladness is in the second summer — the material's summer, the summer of thirteen years of the material receiving and responding and giving back." He pressed his palm to the wall through the connection — she could feel the quality of the contact through the network's ambient resonance. "The wall's gladness is the most extraordinary thing I have ever felt. Thirteen years of a wall being glad of the conversation. Thirteen years of gladness accumulated in the material's summer."
Lily felt the gift's gladness of this understanding warm in her chest.
She thought: the gift makes the world glad. The world is glad of the gift. In the dialogic node, both gladnesses are present simultaneously. The gift being glad of the material and the material being glad of the gift — both accumulated, both permanent, both expressing the same fundamental quality: the gladness of genuine mutual giving.
She thought: the first convergent understood this. She encoded giving into the gift's foundational nature because she understood that the gift's giving produced gladness in the world and the world's receiving produced gladness in the gift and the mutual gladness was what the gift was building toward — not one-directional giving but the mutual gladness of genuine exchange.
She thought: the dialogic node is the most complete expression of what the gift is building toward. Both summers are present. Both gladnesses accumulated. The gift and the world in genuine mutual giving, each producing summer in the other, both summers permanently present in the fifth season quality of the dialogic node.
She thought: Kofi found this. A nineteen-year-old in Accra who pressed his palms to a wall on his way to school for twelve years without knowing what he was doing. He found the most complete expression of what the gift is building toward through the most ordinary possible mechanism: showing up every morning and being genuinely present with the wall and letting the wall be genuinely present with him.
She thought: of course. The most complete expression of the gift is always found through the most ordinary mechanism. The gift has always been trying to tell us this.
She pressed her palms to the kitchen table and felt the wood's accumulated summer and thought: the table and I have been in dialogue for ten years. Perhaps the kitchen table has its own dialogic fifth season quality. Perhaps every surface that a structural convergent has been in daily genuine contact with for long enough has both summers present in it.
She thought: perhaps the world is full of dialogic accumulation that no one has been reading because no one knew to look for it.
She thought: the archive needs to know this. The geo
logical map needs a new dimension.
She began to write.
