Chapter 59

Chapter 59
I slipped into the booth across from Annie, who was already looking over the wine list with a playful twinkle in her eye, and felt the warm, inviting atmosphere of the wine bar.

Without raising her gaze, she remarked, "Sam, it's about time you left that gallery and had a proper drink with me." "You need more than one, in my opinion, given everything that's going on."

I laughed as I put my elbows on the table and found solace in the low murmur of conversation and the clink of glasses. "You're most likely correct. Lately, life has become a bit more extravagant.

When Annie finally looked up, she closed the menu and arched a brow. "More? Attempt to overwhelm. You're right in the center of a soap opera, in my opinion, with Tyler portraying a jealous ex, Caleb's spectacular reappearance, and this mystery surrounding the love letter.

I looked at her with a grudging smile and sighed, a weight weighing on me. "You're not incorrect."

She gestured for the waiter to take our order, which was a bottle of a powerful, deep-red beverage.

When he was gone, Annie drew closer, her eyes bright with anticipation.

"All right, reveal. Give me all the juicy details. This is what I've been waiting for all day.

I inhaled deeply and began from the beginning. I told her about the gallery event, Caleb's impassioned remarks, the unexpected delight of his reappearance, and the strange but unmistakable magnetism of seeing him again.

I remembered our time together with a bittersweet nostalgia, and I talked about how, in spite of everything, a part of me had warmed to him. However, I also talked about Tyler's response the next day, his unexpected arrival at the gallery, his insightful inquiries, and the tension that permeated everything we said.

Last but not least, I talked about the letter that had arrived late that evening, written in exquisite, meticulous script, and personal enough to make me uneasy.

Annie's face changed from amused to genuinely interested. With wide eyes, she finally shook her head.

"A letter? Like a real letter? Are you aware of how uncommon that is these days? Are you certain that neither Tyler nor Caleb did it?

I traced my fingertips over the side of my wine glass and whispered, "Very sure." "The specifics were... too personal." things they wouldn't even be aware of.

Annie's eyes narrowed as she tilted her head. "So you're not even the slightest bit interested in the fact that you have a secret admirer?"

I took a sip and smiled wryly, "Oh, I'm curious." The smooth and creamy wine put me at ease right away. However, I'm also wary. I don't really need any more mysterious males in my life.

Her laughter seemed to purify the air around us since it was bright and unconstrained. "True, true. However, you might want to think about the potential that you are fascinating to someone out there. Is it truly that awful?

"Well, it's complicated when I already have two ex-partners in the picture," I said, shaking my head. "More men trying to win me over is the last thing I need." I returned to New York to start over, not to get caught up in the past.

Annie gave a knowing smile. Perhaps all of this is a part of that fresh start. You do realize that every good story has its turns?

The weight on my chest began to slightly lessen, and I couldn't help but giggle. "This is more of a thriller than I anticipated if that's the case."

We spent some time discussing lighter topics, such as the gallery's development, the concept for the opening night, and the guest list. I felt more grounded after speaking with Annie because of her faith in me, which gave me a sense of stability that I wasn't always able to achieve on my own. She had the ability to make even the most chaotic aspects of my life hilarious and tolerable.

Annie's queries became more daring as the alcohol poured. "Well, Caleb. Is there anything about him that you think you could trust again?

I paused and looked out the window at the sparkling city lights. It's difficult to say. He's still charming and convincing, after all. While I recall how difficult it was to let go, I also wonder if he has changed.

"And Tyler?" She pressed, keeping a tight eye on me. "What is your position on him?"

Emotions swirling beneath the surface, I swallowed. "I have a lot of history with Tyler. But, Annie, he wounded me. It feels risky to let him back into my life.

With a compassionate understanding in her eyes, Annie nodded. "The past has a way of holding us back. But keep in mind that you have changed as a woman. Sam, you're stronger now.

I squeezed her hand as I reached across the table. "I'm grateful, Annie. Without you, I truly don't know what I would do.

She chuckled and squeezed my hand back, saying, "Oh, please." "You'd be all right. I'm not leaving, though.

We enjoyed the moment as we sat in cozy stillness. All around us, the bar was bustling with conversation and laughter-the kind of ambiance that was comforting after a long, chilly day.

Annie's phone buzzed when the server came back with the check. Her eyebrows lifted slightly as she looked down. "Give me a moment, and I will return immediately."

She slipped out of the booth, leaving me to think alone, and I nodded. The warmth crept through me like a steady tide as I took another drink of wine and let it to settle. The night had served as a welcome respite from the mayhem and a reminder of the aspects of my life that weren't entangled with Tyler, Caleb, or enigmatic correspondence.

However, my phone rang with a fresh message notification while I was sitting there. I thought it was a work update or a reminder when I took it out, but I froze when I saw an unknown number. The preview of the message said, "You're never alone."

As I opened the phone to read the rest, a shiver went through me.

"Sam, you're never alone. As always, I'll be keeping an eye on you.

With affection, O.

My heart was racing as I glanced at the words, and I felt uneasy all over. It was disturbing; it was like an unseen cord tying me to someone who knew too much.

I hurriedly shut my phone and stuffed it in my purse, hoping that my expression wouldn't reveal the terror that was building inside of me. Half-expecting to see a stranger hiding in the shadows, monitoring my every move, I looked around the room.

A moment later, Annie came back, unaware of the chaos that was bubbling beneath my serene surface. I was unable to concentrate as she sat down and talked absently about the plans for the weekend. My thoughts were racing, and I kept looking around the room.

"Sam?" Annie's forehead furrowed as her voice cut through the mist. Are you alright? You appear somewhat pallid.

In the hopes that it would be convincing, I forced a smile. Yes, simply a little worn out, that's all. I may decide to call it a night.

Annie's face softened as she nodded. "Obviously. Give me the check, please.

The cool night air did little to calm my uneasiness as we paid and headed outdoors. Annie flagged down a taxi as we made our way to the curb, her chattering filling the quiet and providing a reassuring diversion from my racing thoughts.

"Be careful, Sam," she urged, grabbing me in a brief embrace. And keep in mind that you're not doing this alone. I always have your back.

I drew away, forcing a smile. "I'm grateful, Annie. I'll see you shortly.

I climbed into the taxi and let out a deep breath as it slid away from the curb and wound its way through New York's neon-lit streets.

The momentary tranquility I had experienced ther
e vanished along with the wine bar.

Then my thoughts returned to the letter I had seen and the name of the sender. O.

Who is O?
