Chapter 34

I stood in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection, trying to steady my thoughts as the minutes ticked by.

Tonight was supposed to be a celebration.

A team dinner Caleb had organized in my honor for landing the multi-million-dollar contract.

I should’ve been excited, grateful even. And I was.

But something else tugged at me, an invisible weight pulling me back, chaining me to the past I thought I’d left behind.

Tyler.

I inhaled sharply, letting the name echo in my mind for a moment before pushing it back down, locking it away.

He was part of my past, not my future. Not anymore. I smoothed my dress, the silky fabric cool against my skin, but it did little to calm the storm inside me.

As I grabbed my bag, ready to leave, my phone buzzed. Caleb. I hesitated, glancing at the screen, then swiped to answer.

“Hey,” his voice was warm, comforting in its familiarity.

“Hey,” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady, though I wasn’t sure if I succeeded.

“You heading out soon? I can come pick you up if you want.” Caleb’s offer hung in the air for a second, and for a moment, I was tempted to say yes. But I needed the space tonight. I needed to reel from the thoughts swirling inside my head, the memories I’d worked so hard to bury.

“I’ll get a cab,” I said after a pause, my voice firmer than I felt. “I’ll be there soon.”

“You sure?”

I could hear the concern lacing his words, and it made me smile despite myself.

Caleb had this way of knowing when I wasn’t okay, even when I tried my best to hide it and it was weird… sweet too.

“Yeah, I’m sure. Thanks, though.”

“Alright. See you soon,” he replied softly, and with that, the line went dead.

I slid my phone into my bag and stood there for a moment, letting the silence fill the space around me.

My reflection stared back at me from the mirror, and all I could see were the ghosts that still haunted me.

No matter how hard I tried to shake them off, Tyler’s face lingered in the back of my mind, a constant reminder of everything I had lost.

Everything I had walked away from.

I closed my eyes, letting the memories flood in.

The beginning hadn’t been so bad.

I remembered the day I first moved into Tyler’s house. It wasn’t a palace, but it was grand enough to feel like one. His touch had been soft then, his words kind. He used to smile at me in a way that made me think.. hope, even.. that maybe this arranged marriage wouldn’t be so bad after all. That maybe we could make something out of it.

After all, I didn’t have a choice. My father’s debts had nearly swallowed us whole, and the Morgans had stepped in. But it came with a price. Me.

I thought maybe Tyler would come to love me. Maybe I could love him too.

For a while, it seemed possible. We shared moments, little glimpses of a life that could have been real. Mornings when he’d make me coffee, evenings where we’d sit in silence, not because there was nothing to say, but because it was comfortable.

There was warmth, even if it wasn’t love. Yet.

But then, things changed.

Julie came into his life, and suddenly, the man who used to smile at me didn’t even look at me. His affection grew cold, his words sharp.

I tried to make sense of it, tried to understand what had shifted. At first, I blamed myself. Maybe I wasn’t enough. Maybe I had done something wrong. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t me. It was her.

I never knew exactly what their relationship was. I didn’t want to. All I knew was that he began to pull away, and the home I once thought might become ours became a prison.

I’d walk through those halls feeling like a stranger, not just in the house, but in my own skin.

And the worst part? I still loved him. Or, at least, the version of him I’d first known.

Leaving him, leaving the country, had been the hardest thing I’d ever done. But I knew if I stayed, I’d lose myself completely.

So I packed my bags and walked out of his life.

Out of everything we had built, everything I had hoped for. It wasn’t a grand departure, no dramatic speeches or slammed doors. Just quiet, like the way our marriage had slowly died.

Now, here I was, months later, still caught in the web of what could have been.

Still haunted by the man who had broken my heart in ways I couldn’t fully understand. And the most frustrating part of it all? I still felt something for him.

It made me angry.. angry at myself for not being able to let go completely, for still holding on to the ghost of a man who wasn’t even mine anymore.

I clenched my fists, the frustration rising in my chest. I was about to step into a new phase of my life.. a huge contract, a new beginning. I couldn’t afford to be distracted by the past. Not now. Not when I was so close to finally finding myself again.

I needed to let go.

For real this time.

No more what-ifs, no more lingering thoughts of Tyler. He was part of another life, a life that didn’t belong to me anymore.

I had to let him go.

Taking a deep breath, I stood taller, shaking off the remnants of the past.

Tonight wasn’t about Tyler. It was about me. My work. My success.

And Caleb... he had been there for me in ways I hadn’t expected. Maybe it was time I focused on that, on the future I was building, rather than the one I had left behind.

I grabbed my keys and walked to the door, my heart still heavy, but my mind clearer.

Tyler would always be a part of my story, but he didn’t get to define the rest of it.

That was my choice. And tonight, I chose to move forward. No more looking back.

As I stepped out into the cool night air, I whispered to myself, "Let it go.”
