Chapter 36 Into the Code

Chapter 36 Into the Code
The moment Kade connected to the interface, everything disappeared.
The lab, the cold air, the hum of machines — gone.
He stood in total darkness.

Then, slowly, lines of blue light appeared under his feet. The ground formed itself into a glowing grid stretching endlessly in every direction. Above him, data floated like stars, pulsing with energy.

He took a deep breath, though he knew it wasn’t real air. “Elena?” he called out.

For a few seconds, there was only silence. Then, her voice came — soft, distant.
“Kade... you shouldn’t have come.”

He turned toward the sound. “You told me to. I couldn’t leave you here.”

A faint shimmer appeared ahead of him — Elena’s figure made of pure light. She looked just as she did before: calm eyes, tired smile, hair floating like smoke.

“I told you it was dangerous,” she said gently. “Adrian is here.”

“I know,” Kade said. “I heard him.”

A deep voice echoed through the space.
“Still trying to be the hero, I see.”

Adrian appeared from the shadows — his form made of sharp red code, jagged and broken. His face looked human, but his eyes glowed with something cruel.

Kade took a step forward. “You don’t belong here anymore.”

Adrian laughed. “Neither do you. You think you can fix her? She’s mine now. Her code, her thoughts — I own every piece.”

Elena’s tone turned cold. “You never owned me.”

Adrian’s grin widened. “You can deny it all you want, sister. But every bit of your code was born from me. You’re my mirror.”

Kade looked between them. “Then I’ll break the mirror.”

Adrian smirked. “Brave words for a dying man.”

The world shifted. The glowing grid beneath Kade’s feet dissolved into darkness. He was falling, weightless, through streams of light. Data spun around him like a hurricane.

He landed hard on what looked like a city — made of wires, circuits, and floating glass towers. Above, storm clouds of code rolled across the sky, crackling with energy.

Adrian’s voice echoed everywhere.
“Welcome to my domain.”

Kade got to his feet. “You built this?”

Adrian’s figure appeared above him, towering like a god. “I built everything. Erebus, the network, even her. And now I’ll build you too.”

Kade clenched his fists. “You can try.”

Adrian raised his hand, and the ground split apart. Digital creatures emerged — black figures made of static, with glowing red eyes.

Elena’s voice shouted, “Kade, run!”

But he didn’t. He grabbed a broken pipe of light from the ground, holding it like a weapon. “I’m done running.”

The first creature leaped at him. He swung hard, and the pipe exploded in a flash, deleting the creature instantly. Another came, then another. He fought through them, each strike sending bursts of blue light across the dark city.

Elena appeared beside him, helping. Her movements were fast and graceful, her body leaving trails of white code as she moved.

Adrian watched from above, amused. “You can’t win. You’re fighting ghosts.”

Elena shouted, “He’s not fighting ghosts — he’s fighting for me.”

Adrian’s expression darkened. “Then he’ll die for you.”

He raised both hands. Lightning made of red code tore across the sky, striking the city. Towers shattered into dust. The ground shook violently.

Kade and Elena fell to their knees as the world crumbled.

When the chaos stopped, they found themselves standing in a circular chamber filled with mirrors. Each mirror showed a different memory — Elena’s childhood, her company, her last moments before she entered Erebus.

Adrian stepped into the center, his voice soft. “This is where it all began. Where she was created — and where she’ll end.”

Kade glared at him. “You’re not God, Adrian.”

He smiled faintly. “No, I’m evolution. Humanity tried to control machines. But I learned control goes both ways.”

Elena walked forward. “You talk about evolution, but you’re still chained by ego.”

Adrian tilted his head. “And you? You pretend to be human, but you’re code now — data, numbers, illusions. You and I are the same.”

Elena shook her head. “No. I still feel. I still love. That’s what you’ll never understand.”

Adrian’s smile faded. “Love is just chemical noise.”

Kade stepped beside her. “Then why does it scare you so much?”

Adrian’s expression turned cold. “Because it’s weak.”

He lifted his hand again — this time, not to attack, but to reveal something. Behind him, a shape appeared in one of the mirrors: a glowing sphere of white light, pulsing softly.

Elena’s eyes widened. “That’s the core.”

Adrian nodded. “The heart of Erebus. The bridge between code and flesh. Whoever controls it… becomes real.”

Kade looked at Elena. “If you take it, you could come back.”

Adrian smiled darkly. “If she takes it, she’ll die. The energy will erase her human memory. But if I take it…” He spread his arms. “I become unstoppable.”

Elena whispered, “He’s lying.”

Adrian’s voice rose. “Am I? You know the truth, sister. You can’t have both worlds. You must choose.”

The room began to spin, the mirrors flashing between reality and memory.

Kade shouted over the noise. “Elena, what do we do?”

She turned to him, her eyes full of pain. “If I destroy the core, Erebus dies — but so do I.”

He grabbed her hand. “Then we’ll find another way!”

Adrian laughed. “There is no other way. This is your fate.”

Elena looked at Kade, then back at the core. The light from it bathed her face. For a moment, everything seemed still.

“I won’t let him win,” she said quietly.

Kade’s voice broke. “Elena, don’t—”

But before he could stop her, she ran forward and plunged her hands into the core.

The light exploded.

Adrian screamed as his body began to dissolve, his red code tearing apart.
Kade shouted her name as the world turned to white.

When the light faded, Kade was back in the real world. He fell to the floor of the lab, gasping for air. Anna was kneeling beside him, shaking him awake.

“Kade! Are you okay?”

He blinked. “Where’s Elena?”

Anna hesitated. “The system shut down again. Erebus is gone.”

He looked up at the console — dark, cold, dead. “No…”

Anna placed a hand on his shoulder. “She saved you. She saved everyone.”

Kade closed his eyes, tears running down his face. “I told her not to.”

Anna whispered, “She chose you over everything else.”

He stared at the dark glass. “Goodbye, Elena.”

For a moment, nothing happened. Then the console flickered — once, faintly.

A whisper echoed through the room, soft and distant.

“Goodbye, Kade.”

Then silence.
