Chapter 21 Weapon verified
I was downcasted. I flung the duvet cover on me. I was in a night gown, rough hair and sleepy eyes. He had returned his gaze back to the wardrobe but then he diverted the initial discussion to something more serious.
"Tell me do you have any idea who was present when she was murdered?"
I sat upright on the bed as he had switched his gaze at me again. He was referring to my mother's death. The investigation still continues. I knew he was shunning my question if early. He always does that.
His question cast my mind cast back to the past. The scenerio freaks me out and fear wears me.
I swallowed hard as he paced away from road. The only memory I had about her death was finding her in the house, her room precisely.
She was covered in her own pool of blood.
I could remember how devastated I was, running to assist her. I had a knife in my hand because I was busy in the kitchen chopping veggies. Initially there was a clinging sound coming from her room.
I paced gently into the room with my hands shaking as I approached her.
"How then did you end up in the precinct?" He cuts in, eluding my talks.
"An anonymous witness claims I murdered her after a hot argument with her".
I narrated to him exactly what transpired between me and my mom that night. She had her doubts about ivan and was against our engagement.
I refute her ideas about breaking up ivan. I felt she was hiding something. But I never gave her the chance to express herself as I was blinded by love for this man.
The argument seems to last for a while, and I got fed up hearing her complaints.
I went into the kitchen to cut some veggies in order to calm my anger. To be sincere I even cut my finger due to anger but kept on with the chopping.
I tried to reach out to ivan, but his phone was switched off.
"Was there anyone close by when you two had your arguments?" He chipped in the question. He'd suit for a detective with that serious face of his.
"Yes! A cop woman, I saw her through the balcony taking a look at me" I replied.
I realized that he was with a pen and a little jotter, writing my statements like a detective in charge of my case. He had a serious look, scrolling his eyes on the write up. He was now sitting on the couch.
I saw his lips moved, and I heard him mutter "witness".
I moved from the bed and sat on the couch with him. He took a glance at me, and returned his gaze upon his book.
"So you were accused as her murderer, because of the fight? So where was ivan all this time?" He paused and cleared his throat. I rubbed the back of my neck, folded my lips and continued.
"That day, he had a business trip to represent his company. I even saw him off to the airport. He was definitely unaware".
He nodded his head and then squint his eyes at me like though he had his doubts.
He was about saying another word when his phone beeps. His phone was between us on the couch.
A message popped on his screen and if I wasn't mistaking, my eyes read; "weapons verified, one more shot".
He quickly took the phone, feeling unease and suddenly jerked up from the couch.
"I've got to go, to find someone who has a clue on your mother's case".
I stood and said, "I am coming with you". There was no harm in coming along as his words ignited hope in my heart.
"Back off!" he snarled.
I was startled, as he never liked the idea of me following him either. It always was.
"She is my mother, don't I deserve to know more about her death?".
"I will handle it Arianna" he voice softened as he tried to convince me to stay back.
That didn't change my mind, I wanted to come with him. He should not take the burden alone. I was disliking this attitude of his. Was I a bird trapped in a cage or a prisoner in a cell?
I was tired of complaining about that. Annoyingly, I stormed out of the room and slammed the door behind me not wanting to hear his voice again. I was furiously moving around the lobby complaining about his act.
"No Arianna you can't go with me, no Arianna you are not supposed to do this, no Arianna you are not supposed to touch that, no Arianna do not go there" I paused after mimicking and exhaled.
"No Arianna you can't touch my things, no Arianna you looks messy change it. Argh! I feel like punching him in the face".
"Really! Do I really sound like that?" His voice stuttered me and I turned around, only to find him gazing at me with folded hands. I was startled, feeling embarrassed that he heard him. How comes I didn't know he followed me?
He took a step closer to me, heaved a sigh and I knew what was coming next.
"I am only trying to..."
"Protect you to keep you safe" I completed his words and he suddenly burst into laughter.
"What!" I questioned pulling a frown at his fixed gaze.
"Do not use that again, it's horrible. And I don't even sound like that" he complained.
I giggled, and held my lips to avoid mocking him further.
He chuckled but then we both ceased as though we realized ourselves. He cleared his throat keeping a straight face at me. He back to being the serious guy he was.
I wished he knows smiling often will lift off any burden he has at heart.
I told myself if this investigation ends, I'd find a spare time to learn more about him.
Earlier, when he laughed, I felt my heart fluster. His eyes sparks with so much peace in it. Even though he tried controlling himself.
"Go get dress, we leave in a minute".
I widened my eyes as I smiled sheepishly at him. My legs raced towards him and I wrapped my hands around his shoulders and gave him a hug. His arms were freely resting and he must be surprised by my act. I'd consider this a date as he was willing letting me come with him. How excited I was to be working on my mother's case with him.
It was part of the contract, to help me out. However, I was yet to know what was his own wish.
He ducked his head at me, but I never mind. I was so excited and whispered "thank you".
