Chapter 86: Fractured Bonds
The city burned behind them, its once-glorious skyline now a graveyard of crumbling towers and shattered glass. Smoke curled toward the heavens like the dying breath of a fallen beast. The echoes of battle still rang in Evelyn’s ears as she staggered forward, Lucian at her side, his grip firm but weakening with each passing second.
"We need to keep moving," he rasped, his voice tight with pain. Blood soaked through his shirt, a deep wound near his ribs seeping crimson.
Evelyn tightened her grip on his arm, forcing her own exhaustion aside. "We’re almost there. Just hold on."
Lucian gave her a lopsided smile, his silver eyes gleaming despite the agony shadowing his features. "You always say that."
She did. Because she had to believe it.
The safe house was just ahead, hidden in the abandoned tunnels beneath the ruins of the old city. But getting there meant surviving the next few minutes. Their enemies would not stop until both of them were dead.
A sudden explosion rocked the ground beneath them. Evelyn turned in time to see the figures emerging from the smoke—soldiers clad in black, weapons raised. The final wave had come.
Lucian pushed her behind him. "Go. I'll hold them off."
"No!" she snapped, whirling to face him. "We do this together. We always have."
Lucian’s expression softened, but his hands remained steady on his weapon. "Evelyn, you know how this ends. They’re not after me. They want you. And you still have a chance to escape."
Her chest tightened. "Don’t do this."
A gunshot rang out. Lucian staggered but remained standing, his jaw clenched against the pain. Evelyn saw the fresh wound blooming on his shoulder, another mark of sacrifice.
"Run!" he growled, shoving her toward the tunnel entrance.
Evelyn hesitated for a heartbeat that felt like an eternity. Then, with every ounce of strength she had left, she turned and ran, disappearing into the shadows as Lucian raised his gun one last time.
The sound of gunfire followed her into the darkness.
She didn’t look back.
The battlefield was drenched in the scent of death and betrayal. Evelyn stood in the wreckage of what had once been a stronghold, her crimson eyes glowing in the dim moonlight. The bodies of those who had opposed her lay strewn across the ruined ground, their lifeless gazes a silent testament to her wrath.
Lucian was beside her, his body battered, his breaths ragged. He clutched his side, where a deep wound oozed with blood, but his grip on his sword remained firm. "It’s almost over," he murmured, his voice tinged with exhaustion.
Evelyn exhaled sharply. "No, it’s never over. There’s always another enemy lurking in the shadows. Always another battle to fight."
Lucian stepped closer, his hand reaching for her face, cupping it gently. "Then let this be the last one. If we end this tonight, you’ll be free."
A distant explosion rocked the ruins, shaking dust from the remaining walls. Evelyn turned, eyes narrowing. The final opponent—Viktor—was still out there, waiting for them. He had been the one pulling the strings all along, the one who had orchestrated her downfall, the one who had betrayed them all.
"Come then," she whispered. "Let’s finish this."
They moved as one, a deadly force cutting through the remnants of Viktor’s forces. The battle was fierce, but Evelyn was unstoppable. Her movements were a blur of speed and precision, her fangs bared as she tore through anyone in her path.
At last, she reached him.
Viktor stood at the center of the battlefield, waiting for her. His eyes, dark and calculating, met hers with a smirk. "You’re stronger than I expected," he admitted, wiping blood from his lips. "But you should’ve known, Evelyn. There’s no winning against me."
Evelyn didn't reply. She lunged.
The fight was brutal, both of them matched in power. But Viktor had underestimated her rage. With a final, deadly strike, she sank her claws into his chest, twisting until she felt his heart shatter beneath her grasp.
Viktor gasped, his smirk faltering. "You..."
"This is for everything you took from me," Evelyn whispered before ripping his heart free.
Viktor collapsed, his body crumbling to dust before her eyes.
Silence.
Lucian approached, panting, his body barely holding together. "It’s done."
Evelyn turned to him, her gaze softening. "Yes. But at what cost?"
Lucian gave her a weary smile. "At the cost of freedom. Your freedom."
As the dawn began to break, Evelyn knew that the end was near—but not in the way she had imagined. There was still one final sacrifice to be made. One last goodbye.
