Chapter 19: Evelyn Bennett's Plan
Matthew didn't bother with this shrew anymore. He ignored her and walked away.
He arrived at a breakfast stall and ordered a bowl of porridge and a basket of steamed buns. While scrolling through his phone, he started eating.
"Looks like you're here, kid."
Matthew looked up and found Jacob sitting in front of him, staring at him with a speechless expression.
As a regular customer at this breakfast shop, he wasn't surprised that Jacob could find him.
"What are you doing here instead of going to work?" Matthew asked, puzzled.
"You didn't tell me what the hell is going on. I was dumbfounded when I saw your name in the boss's column yesterday. Hurry up and tell me what's going on. And, did you have anything to do with that incident involving Nathan Turner?" Jacob muttered.
"What happened to him?" Matthew asked.
"Don't you know? Several real estate companies are suing him, and the compensation amount is so high it's like selling his wife and kids wouldn't be enough." Jacob grabbed a bun, stuffed it in his mouth, and said, "He called me yesterday, begging me to talk to you on his behalf."
Matthew seemed unfazed by his change in status, and their interaction remained the same.
"He brought it upon himself, and it's true that there were instances of cutting corners in the projects he contracted. We can't deny that he brought this upon himself," Matthew said calmly.
Jacob sneered, "I didn't come here for that. I'm asking you how the hell you suddenly became the boss of Grand Vision Ltd."
Matthew sighed. He didn't think much of Jacob either.
"I don't remember anything from three years ago. You know that, right?" he said.
"Yeah," Jacob nodded. "And then?"
"And then, it turns out I'm a very wealthy person. Suddenly, my memories came back, and I found a bank card. Upon checking, I realized there was a lot of money in that account. To make Elizabeth and her family regret, I acquired Grand Vision Ltd., deliberately letting Scarlett discover that I have money," Matthew explained simply.
As for the Night Guard and other matters, he naturally couldn't tell Jacob.
"Are you planning to embarrass them?" Jacob's eyes lit up as he asked.
Matthew smiled, "I thought about it before, but now, my resentment towards them isn't as deep."
After regaining his memories, his perspective had changed.
"You've certainly changed a lot, and you never belonged here in the first place. Besides, regardless of anything else, Elizabeth's father saved your life. That house means nothing to you now, consider it repayment."
Of course, Matthew couldn't completely forget the grievances he had suffered over the past three years. Regardless, feeling disgusted with this mother-daughter pair was inevitable.
"You should go to work, even though I'm the boss, it's not good for you to keep skipping work like this. Plus, you need to learn something while you're here. Although I won't fire you, it'll bother you if others start pointing fingers at you," Matthew said.
"I know, but I took leave today. The company prepaid me 500,000 dollars yesterday, and I couldn't wait. I already took Caleb to the hospital for surgery. I only came to find you after he fell asleep." Jacob said.
Matthew nodded. "Alright, later I'll go with you to visit Caleb."
...
Meanwhile, at the entrance of Grand Vision Ltd., a bald middle-aged man in a neatly tailored suit paced anxiously with a briefcase in hand and bottles of fine wine on each side.
Soon, a beautiful figure hurried over and, upon seeing the middle-aged man, asked in surprise, "Uncle Bailey, why have you come to find me?"
The man in front of her was none other than Elizabeth's uncle, Isabella's older brother, uncle Bailey.
When he saw Scarlett, a smile appeared on his face as he quickly said, "Scarlett, the thing is, I wanted to see Mr. Campbell from your company. Previously, our company's goods had been transported by Sheng Shi. Yesterday, he suddenly told me they're terminating the cooperation. I tried other logistics companies, but their prices were all too high."
Scarlett's expression changed slightly.
She suddenly remembered the words Matthew Parker had said to them at the door on the day of his divorce. "You will regret this."
And now, Matthew Parker had transformed into her boss. She didn't know the exact details, but she understood one thing, Matthew Parker was completely different from what she had imagined.
Scarlett forced a bitter smile and said, "I can't help you with that matter. I'm just an employee of the company."
"Well, I just saw Mr. Campbell at the entrance, but he didn't want to talk to me. I thought maybe you could take me into the company so I can find Mr. Campbell," uncle Bailey responded.
Scarlett sighed and looked at him, saying, "Uncle, although I'm not sure what's going on, it is indeed true that Mr. Campbell is no longer our boss. Our new boss now... is Matthew Parker!"
"Matthew Parker? Which Matthew Parker?" he asked.
Scarlett laughed bitterly and said, "Who else could it be but Elizabeth's ex-husband."
Uncle Bailey's face suddenly changed, full of disbelief.
"So instead of coming to me, why don't you go find aunt Isabela and Elizabeth? Although I doubt it would make any difference, considering how we treated him back then," Scarlett said.
"He's seeking revenge on us!" Uncle Bailey said with a pale face.
In fact, this matter has little to do with Matthew Parker.
Yesterday, he talked to Aaron Thompson and asked him to take care of things on the Sheng Shi side. Immediately after that, Aaron Thompson called Mr. Campbell to discuss cooperation.
When Mr. Campbell received the call, he was frightened. This was Riverdale's richest man!
Their business was enormous. After receiving this news, he quickly made a judgment and terminated some less important projects, redirecting resources to Aaron's side.
Uncle Bailey was just implicated, nothing more.
"To be honest, I'm quite worried now," Scarlett's beautiful face was filled with concern. "Every moment at the company, I feel like I might lose my job!"
...
After having something to eat with Jacob at the doorway, Matthew went to the hospital with him to see Caleb. Then the two bid Caleb farewell and took a taxi back home.
Now, he didn't have to do any manual labor, and he was merely a figurehead in the company. Evelyn hadn't assigned him any tasks for Night Guard, so he really had nothing to do.
Returning home, it was already noon. Evelyn and Aria had prepared the food, and when Matthew came back, Evelyn glanced at him and said, "You seem quite idle."
Matthew chuckled and said, "Well, I have nothing to do right now, and there are no tasks to execute for Night Guard."
Evelyn glanced at him and said, "Night Guard, you don't need to go back."
"Hmm?" Matthew asked in surprise, "What do you mean?"
"You disappeared for three years. I just spoke with the old man on the phone, and that's what he meant. For these three years, both within Night Guard and among other factions, they all thought you had completely vanished. So, for now, there's no need for you to reveal yourself. By cooperating with us as an undercover agent in this city, it will be easier for you to execute certain tasks," Evelyn explained.
Matthew's eyes brightened. "That's true, and I'll have more freedom too."
"What about you? How are the tasks going?" he asked.
"According to plan," Evelyn replied. "It's time to find something for you to do."
Meanwhile, Aria was eating beside them when suddenly she coughed.
Matthew didn't pay much attention to it and his eyes lit up. "Have they found their people?"
"Not exactly," Evelyn said, "but we know their objective. They plan to kidnap or kill Olivia Thompson to force Aaron Thompson to join their organization. As you know, Aaron Thompson is aware of our existence. We had an understanding with him when we just arrived. Now, the most important thing is to ensure Olivia Thompson's safety."
"So, what's the plan?" Matthew asked.
"So, we need to send someone, undercover and unknown to Blood Lotus, to be with Olivia." Evelyn calmly stated, taking a bite of food.
"You mean, you want me to be Olivia's bodyguard?" he asked in astonishment.
It wasn't something he refused, as he had been a bodyguard to the target before during missions.
"Not a bodyguard, that's too deliberate," Evelyn explained. "If it's a bodyguard, they would most likely guess that it's our person, so they would strike when the bodyguard is not around."
At this point, she looked at Matthew and continued, "You disappeared for three years in Riverdale, where you were just an ordinary person. So, if you appear at Olivia's side, no one would think much of it, especially...as her husband..."
"Wait a minute..." Matthew sensed that something was off and quickly said, "You mean..."
"Husband." Evelyn said calmly, "I told you, after we arrived in Riverdale, we already contacted Aaron Thompson. So, he organized a gathering to publicly announce that anyone can pursue Olivia. In the end, you successfully pursue her and marry into the Thompson family, becoming their son-in-law."
As she spoke, she looked at Matthew, whose pupils widened, and said, "In this way, you can be by Olivia's side, even sleep in the same bed. You can provide her with 24-hour personal protection!"
"I'm not ordinary anymore, I bought a company. My photo is even displayed on the company's boss board!" Matthew rubbed his slightly painful head.
"That's perfect. This company is the gift Aaron Thompson gave you to welcome you!" Evelyn said in the same calm tone.
Matthew frowned. In everyone's eyes, he had truly become a man who relied on others for a living!
