No rest, more war

Sam stepped forward, her gaze imploring as she addressed the Queen. "Your Majesty, I beg of you to reconsider. The Shadows' stronghold is perilous, and the risks we would face are immense. We have already fought so hard and lost so much. Please, let us rest and regain our strength here, in the safety of your kingdom."

James bit his lip, torn between his desire to finish the fight and his concern for his companions. He knew they had all endured great loss, and the thought of risking more weighed heavily on his mind.

"Sam, I hear your words and understand your concerns," Kate said, her voice firm but sympathetic. "But we cannot allow the Shadows to regroup and rebuild their strength. If we do not strike now, while they are weakened, we may never have another chance."

Kate turned to the Queen, her eyes pleading. "Your Majesty, please understand that we do not seek glory or honor. We seek only to protect our world, and the people we love. With your guidance and blessing, we believe we can do this."

The Queen fell silent, her expression inscrutable.

Peter placed a hand on Sam's shoulder, his face creased with worry. "Kate speaks with wisdom and courage, Your Majesty, but I fear that we may not be prepared for another fight so soon after our battle in Heaven. Our wounds are still fresh, and our spirits are weary."

"We need time to heal, to mourn our fallen friends," he continued, his voice catching slightly. "I beg of you, give us a few days to recover. Then, if we are still able, we will march to the Shadows' stronghold."

The Queen glanced at Peter, her expression softening.

"Enough!" Kate snapped, her eyes blazing with a fierce light. "Peter, you speak of wounds and rest, but how can we rest when our world is in danger? When the Shadows are waiting to strike again?"

She stepped forward, her chin jutting out defiantly. "You say we need time to heal, but what if the next attack comes too soon? What if there are more lives lost because we were too afraid to act?"

Kate whirled around, her gaze searching out James.

"James, what do you say?"

James' eyes flickered between Kate and Peter, his indecision plain on his face. He knew that both of them were speaking from a place of genuine concern, and he hated being the one to make the decision.

Finally, he sighed heavily. "Kate, you are my sister in arms," he began. "I will follow you into battle, as I always have. But this time, I believe Peter is right. We are not as strong as we need to be. If we go to the stronghold now, we may not make it out alive."

Kate's shoulders slumped, her disappointment palpable.

Kate's hands clenched into fists at her sides, and her eyes flashed with anger. "You would choose rest over the safety of our people?" she hissed. "I thought better of you, James."

Alec stepped forward, placing a hand on Kate's arm. "Kate, it's not like that," he said, his voice low and calming. "James is only thinking of our safety."

"Our safety doesn't matter if our world falls to the Shadows," Kate shot back. "If you won't help us, then we'll do it ourselves."

Without another word, Kate and Alec turned on their heels and stalked off into the night, the sound of their retreating footsteps echoing through the silent streets. James watched them go, a knot of guilt and regret forming in his stomach.

"James, you did the right thing," Sam said, placing a hand on his arm. "We can't help anyone if we're dead."

James nodded, but he knew he would carry the weight of his decision with him, no matter what the outcome.

"Let's go," he said, his voice quiet but firm.

As James and the others made their way out of the city, prepared to make the long journey back to their kingdom, Kali's voice rang out from behind them.

"Wait!" she called, her eyes blazing with resolve. "You can't go without us. We're a team, remember? We started this together, and we'll finish it together."

Askit and Aleka exchanged a glance, determination etched on their faces.

"Kali's right," Askit said, stepping forward to stand next to James. "We've faced worse odds before, and we'll face them again.

Kali took a deep breath, steeling herself for what she was about to reveal. "I need to tell you something," she said, her voice solemn. "About Kia and Mary."

Askit frowned. "What about them? I thought they were still in the dungeons back home."

Kali swallowed, her expression grave. "They weren't. They escaped, and they were working with Uber. They were the ones who held Peter hostage."

The group erupted in disbelief and outrage.

Alec's brow furrowed in confusion as he processed Kali's revelation. "Kia and Mary?" he repeated, disbelief coloring his voice. "Are you sure it was them? They were part of our team. Why would they betray us like that?"

Kali nodded, her expression grim. "I'm sure. I recognized them when we confronted Uber in the forest. They were wearing cloaks to disguise themselves, but I saw their faces. They knew it was us, and they were working with the Shadows."

Peter scowled, his hand tightening around the hilt of his sword.

Kelly stepped forward, her gaze steady and her voice resolute. "Kia and Mary are our enemies now. If we want to save our world, we have to remember that. But Kali is right. We're stronger together, and we'll need that strength to defeat the Shadows."

"And James, I know that rest is not your strong suit," she added with a slight smile. "But maybe a short rest will give us the edge we need. Let's not forget that even warriors need to recover."

The group exchanged glances, the tension in the air slowly dissipating.

The group agreed to find a safe place to rest for the night, gathering around a small fire in a nearby clearing. As the flames danced and crackled, they took turns standing watch, keeping their weapons close at hand.

Despite the danger they still faced, there was a sense of camaraderie in the air. They'd been through so much together, and the bonds they'd formed were stronger than ever.

Sam reached into her pack and pulled out some dried meat and berries, offering them to the group.
