Chapter 19
"Call Gaia now and tell her you can't drive and want to quit."
"Okay."
Lila thought that was the right thing to do.
As she took out her phone and opened her recent calls to find Gaia's number, Alexander added, "Put it on speaker."
"Okay."
Lila did as told.
The call connected quickly, and Gaia's warm voice came through. "Lila, what's wrong?"
"Grandma, it's my first day at work and I crashed into Mr. Sinclair's car."
Gaia asked anxiously, "A car accident? Lila, are you okay??"
Lila quickly replied, "I'm fine, Grandma, don't worry. I just delayed Mr. Sinclair's schedule, and the repairs will cost a lot of money. Even with insurance, the premium will go up a lot next year."
"That's okay, as long as you're fine. Money is nothing—my grandson has plenty of it. Don't feel bad about it, just be more careful next time."
Hearing this, Alexander's lips curled into a mocking smile.
Lila quickly got to the point. "Grandma, actually I want to quit."
"Why? Don't you like being a driver?"
"No, it's just that I haven't driven since getting my license. I have zero driving experience. I don't think I'm qualified to be Mr. Sinclair's driver. He should hire someone suitable, otherwise it'll affect his work."
Gaia asked, "Did my grandson get to the office?"
"Yes, he did."
"See, even though you're not used to driving, he still got to the office, right? That's enough. Having a license means the driving school approved your skills. You just need more practice. He has so many cars in his garage—after you crash ten or eight of them, your driving will naturally improve, right?"
Lila knew Gaia meant well, but could only repeat helplessly. "Grandma, I'm really not suitable..."
Gaia's tone immediately became serious. "Lila, tell me the truth. Did my grandson tell you to say this to me?"
Lila was surprised by Gaia's sharpness.
Lila glanced at Alexander and denied it to the phone. "No, I just feel I'm not experienced enough."
"Put him on the phone," Gaia commanded directly.
Lila looked at Alexander pleadingly.
Alexander frowned, displeased, and hooked his finger at her, signaling her to bring the phone over.
Lila placed the phone on his desk, and to keep Gaia from knowing it was on speaker, symbolically reminded him. "Grandma wants to talk to you."
Alexander stared at the phone screen and said in a low voice. "Grandma, what is it?"
"Either Lila continues as your driver, or I'll arrange for servants to go to Island Mansion to look after you two. Which one?"
"Why bring up servants? Let's stick to the point—she's not suitable for the driver position."
Gaia snorted coldly. "Don't think I don't know what you're up to. You just want to get rid of her, but as far as I'm concerned, either she stays at the Sinclair Group—she can transfer to another position if needed—or I'll send people to Island Mansion to watch your every move."
Alexander chuckled lightly. "So you finally admit it's surveillance?"
"So what if it is? Don't forget you promised..."
Realizing what Gaia was about to say, Alexander immediately frowned and cut her off. "I know, I'll let her stay at the Sinclair Group."
"Smart boy!"
"Hanging up now."
As soon as the call ended, Alexander glared at Lila as if he wanted to devour her.
Lila quietly took back her phone and put on a pitiful expression. "There's nothing I can do. Grandma is pretty stubborn. I don't want to be your driver either."
Alexander snorted disdainfully, "So you're saying you're the victim here?"
