CHAPTER 158
THIRD PERSON'S POV
The evening had settled over the lake house like a soft blanket, the last traces of sunset fading into twilight. Elysia sat on the porch, a cup of tea in her hands, watching the stars emerge one by one.
The trial had consumed her days, her nights, her thoughts. But here, in the quiet of the lake, she found a small measure of peace.
Kieran joined her, his arm slipping around her waist. "You're thinking again."
"I'm always thinking."
"What about?"
"About the trial. About Crane's witnesses. About the juror who keeps frowning." She sighed, leaning into him. "I can't stop. Every moment I'm not working, I'm worrying."
He pressed a kiss to her forehead. "That's because you care. It's one of the things I love about you."
She smiled, the tension easing slightly. "I love you too."
They sat in comfortable silence, the sounds of the night wrapping around them, the chirping of crickets, the gentle lapping of the lake against the shore.
The sound of tires on gravel broke the stillness. Elysia looked up, her heart racing. A black sedan had pulled into the driveway, its headlights cutting through the darkness. The car stopped, and the driver's door opened.
A man stepped out. He was tall, broad-shouldered, his face half-hidden in shadow. But there was no mistaking who it was.
Victor Kane.
Elysia's blood ran cold. She stood, her hand gripping Kieran's arm. "What is he doing here?"
Kieran was already on his feet, his body positioned between Elysia and the approaching figure. "Stay behind me."
Kane walked toward them, his steps unhurried, his expression one of cold amusement. He stopped at the bottom of the porch steps, his gaze sweeping over them.
"Ms. Castello. Mr. D'Angelo. I hope I'm not interrupting."
Elysia's voice was sharp. "What are you doing here, Kane?"
He smiled, a thin, unpleasant expression. "I thought it was time we had a conversation. Man to man. Woman to woman."
He glanced at Kieran, his eyes glinting. "Or perhaps business to business."
"I have nothing to say to you." Elysia said, her voice firm.
"Ah, but I have something to say to you." He stepped onto the porch, his presence looming. "I've been watching you. Your dedication. Your passion. It's admirable, really. But it's also very... inconvenient."
Kieran moved forward, his voice low and dangerous. "You need to leave. Now."
Kane held up his hands, a gesture of mock surrender. "I'm not here to cause trouble. I'm here to make an offer." He reached into his pocket, pulling out an envelope. "A generous offer. One that will make all your problems disappear."
Elysia stared at the envelope, her heart pounding. "I'm not interested."
"Not even for a million dollars? Two million? Name your price." Kane's voice was smooth, persuasive. "You could walk away from this case and never look back. You could give your family the life they deserve."
Elysia felt a surge of anger. "My family already has the life they deserve. And it doesn't include taking blood money from a criminal."
Kane's smile faded, replaced by something colder. "I was hoping you'd be reasonable. But I can see you're not."
Kieran stepped closer, his voice a low growl. "You heard her. Leave. Now."
Kane's eyes flicked to Kieran, a flash of contempt in his gaze. "You think you can protect her? You think you can protect your family?"
He laughed, a harsh, ugly sound. "I have people everywhere. I can reach anyone, anytime. Your daughter. Your parents. Your friends. They're all vulnerable."
Elysia's blood ran cold. "If you touch my family—"
"You'll do what?" Kane interrupted, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "You're a lawyer. You play by the rules. But I don't play by the rules. And that's why I always win."
Kieran moved, his hand gripping Kane's arm. "Get off my property. Now."
Kane shook him off, his expression one of barely contained fury. "This isn't over. You've made an enemy of the wrong man."
He turned to Elysia, his eyes burning. "Drop the case, Ms. Castello. Or you'll regret it. I promise you that."
He walked back to his car, his steps unhurried. He paused at the driver's door, looking back at them. "Think about my offer. It's still on the table. For now."
The car engine roared to life, and Kane drove away, his taillights disappearing into the darkness.
Elysia stood frozen, her heart pounding. Kieran pulled her into his arms, his grip tight. "Are you okay?"
She nodded, her voice shaky. "I'm fine. I'm just... I can't believe he came here. To our home."
"He's trying to scare you. To intimidate you." Kieran's voice was firm. "We're not going to let him."
She looked up at him, her eyes filled with determination. "I know. But we need to be careful. He's dangerous."
"I know. I'll increase security. We'll be ready for anything."
She nodded, her resolve hardening. "I'm not going to drop the case, Kieran. I can't. Maya deserves justice. And I'm not going to let Kane win."
"I know." He pressed a kiss to her forehead. "And I'm proud of you."
That night, Elysia lay awake, staring at the ceiling. The threat hung over her like a cloud, a constant reminder of the danger that lurked in the shadows.
But she refused to be intimidated. She had come too far to turn back now.
She would fight for Maya. She would fight for justice. And she would not let Victor Kane win.
