Chapter 188: Beneath the Ice
The elevator doors opened.
Liam stepped out first. They were back beneath the ruins of the Hawks arena. But something had changed.
The underground facility was silent. No alarms. No machines. No guards. Only the faint sound of something moving beneath the floor.
Clara stepped beside Liam. “Do you hear that?” He nodded. A low vibration traveled through the walls. Aria looked frightened. “It’s here.”
Liam turned toward her. “What is?” “The Final Root.”
Adrian looked around. “But you said you moved it.” “I did.” “Where?” Aria pointed upward. “Above us.”
Everyone froze. Lucas checked the scanner. His eyes widened. “The energy is directly beneath the arena.” Ryan frowned. “But the arena is destroyed.” “Not completely.”
Lucas enlarged the map. “There is a chamber underneath the ice.” Elena closed her eyes. “I remember this place.” Liam looked at her. “You’ve been here?” “Once.”
“Why?” “Victor brought me here after you were born.” “What did he show you?” Elena swallowed. “The original chamber.” Liam’s expression hardened. “And what was inside?” “The Final Root.”
A loud crack echoed through the ceiling. Dust fell around them. Liam looked up. “We need to get there.” Elias grabbed his shoulder. “Wait.”
Liam turned. “What?” Elias pointed toward the corridor. Someone was standing in the darkness. Liam raised his hand. “Who are you?”
The figure stepped forward. Alexander. He was injured, but alive. Clara immediately moved closer to Liam. “How did you survive?” Alexander smiled.
“I know these tunnels better than anyone.” Liam’s expression hardened. “You followed us.” “I had to.” “Why?” “Because you don’t understand what you’re about to awaken.”
Aria stepped forward. “You’re afraid.” Alexander looked at her. “Yes.” The admission surprised everyone. “I’ve spent my entire life studying the Roots.”
He looked at Liam. “I believed the First Root was the greatest power.” Then Adrian. “I was wrong.” Then Mara. “I thought the Second Root was the balance.”
He looked at Aria. “But the Final Root isn’t power.” “What is it?” Liam asked. Alexander answered quietly. “Judgment.” The lights flickered. A deep voice echoed from beneath them.
“JUDGMENT BEGINS.”
Alexander stepped backward. “It’s awake.” Liam looked at Aria. “What does that mean?” Aria shook her head. “I don’t know.”
The floor suddenly split. A massive staircase appeared beneath them. Golden light rose from below. Lucas checked the scanner. “The chamber is opening.”
Liam stepped toward the stairs. “We go down.” Elias shook his head. “Together.” They descended.
The deeper they went, the stronger the energy became. At the bottom stood a massive circular chamber. In the center was a pool of glowing golden liquid. Above it floated a small crystal.
Liam stared. “That’s the Root?” Elena shook her head. “No.” She looked terrified. “That’s the heart.” Aria stepped forward. The crystal immediately reacted. Golden light surrounded her. She gasped. “I can feel everything.”
“Everything?” “The Roots.” She closed her eyes. “The First.” “The Second.” “And something else.”
Liam stepped closer. “What?” Aria opened her eyes. “The people who created them.”
A screen appeared on the wall. Old footage began playing. A group of scientists stood around the original chamber. One of them was Elena. Another was Elias.
Liam stared. “You were both involved.” Elias lowered his head. “We were.” Clara looked at them. “Why didn’t you tell us?”
Elena’s voice trembled. “Because we were ashamed.” The footage continued. A scientist held a newborn baby. Liam.
Another baby was placed beside him. Adrian. Then a third. Mara. Clara stared. “But where is Aria?” The footage changed. A fourth baby appeared. Aria.
The scientists placed the four children around the crystal. Liam’s eyes widened. “We were all part of this.” Elena nodded. “You were chosen before you were born.” “Why?” “Because the Root needed four vessels.”
Alexander stepped forward. “Not vessels.” He looked at Aria. “Guardians.” Aria stared at him. “Then why did you turn us into experiments?” “Because the scientists became afraid.” “Of what?” “Of the power they created.”
Liam looked at the crystal. “And now?” Alexander shook his head. “Now it will decide whether humanity deserves to keep it.”
The crystal suddenly exploded with light. Everyone shielded their eyes. A voice filled the chamber.
“FOUR VESSELS.”
Liam stepped forward. “We’re here.”
“FOUR CHOICES.”
Adrian looked at him. “What choices?” Four symbols appeared around the crystal.
POWER.
CONTROL.
REVENGE.
FREEDOM.
Mara stared at them. “What happens if we choose?” The voice answered.
“THE FUTURE.”
Liam looked at his family. Adrian’s fists tightened. Mara looked toward Elena. Aria stared at Clara. Clara stepped forward. “What if we refuse?”
The chamber became silent. Then the voice answered.
“THEN THE ROOT WILL CHOOSE FOR YOU.”
The crystal began spinning. The chamber shook. Alexander suddenly rushed toward it. “Stop!” Liam grabbed him. “What are you doing?” “If the Root chooses, humanity loses control.”
Liam looked at him. “Maybe humanity shouldn’t have control.” Alexander stared. “You don’t understand.” “I understand enough.” Liam pushed him back. “You’ve controlled people for years.”
Alexander’s expression hardened. “Control keeps people alive.” “No.”
Liam shook his head. “Choice does.”
The crystal suddenly stopped. A beam of light struck Liam. He fell to his knees. Clara screamed. “Liam!” Golden symbols appeared across his arms.
Then a second beam struck Adrian. A third struck Mara. A fourth struck Aria. The four siblings stood inside separate circles of light.
Liam looked at the others. “What’s happening?” Aria answered. “It’s choosing us.”
Suddenly, Liam saw a vision. The Hawks arena. Crowds cheering. His father smiling. Clara beside him. His mother watching from the stands. His brother. His sister. His friends.
A normal life. Then another vision appeared. Power. Millions of people kneeling before him. The world under his control. He understood.
The Root wasn’t testing strength. It was testing desire. A voice whispered,
“CHOOSE.”
Liam closed his eyes. “I choose freedom.” The light around him turned white. Adrian looked at his own visions. He saw Alexander. He saw every year of pain. He could have revenge. His hands trembled. Then he whispered, “I choose freedom too.”
Mara stared at her vision. She could make everyone fear her. She could punish everyone who had hurt her. Instead, she smiled. “Freedom.”
Aria looked at the crystal. She could release the Root completely. Or keep it trapped. She looked at Liam. “What would you choose?”
“Whatever lets you live.” Aria smiled. “Then I choose freedom.” The four lights merged. The crystal cracked. Alexander screamed. “No!”
The chamber exploded with golden light. When the light faded, the crystal was gone. The Roots were gone. The energy was gone. Only four small symbols remained on the floor.
Liam looked at them. “What happened?” Elena smiled through her tears. “The Roots are no longer controlling you.” Liam looked at Clara. “And now?”
A distant rumble echoed beneath the arena. Lucas checked his scanner. His face went pale. “Guys…” Everyone turned. “What?” He pointed at the screen.
“There’s another energy signature.” Liam frowned. “Where?” Lucas slowly looked upward. “Above us.” The arena lights suddenly came on. Then the giant Hawks scoreboard activated. A message appeared:
GAME NOT OVER.
Liam stared at the screen. Clara whispered, “Who sent that?” A familiar voice answered through the arena speakers. “Me.”
Liam’s blood ran cold. It was Victor.
