Chapter 289: Stay Away from Him
Scarlett stared at Daniel, her eyes full of shock.
What was he talking about?
Bunny was clearly quiet in her belly. How could she not feel any fetal movement?
But Daniel spoke with complete seriousness, "Mr. Howard probably doesn't know what fetal movement feels like yet? I suggest Mr. Howard and Ms. Howard hurry up and get married and have children to experience it. It's quite amazing, isn't it, Scarlett?"
Daniel lowered his eyes, then raised his eyebrows as he looked at Scarlett.
Daniel's large hand gently moved around Scarlett's waist, as if saying, don't expose me.
Scarlett had just made a fool of herself in front of Theron, making assumptions and causing a misunderstanding. That was embarrassing enough.
Now Daniel was doing this too. Scarlett's face turned completely red - she could barely face Theron anymore.
She glared hard at Daniel. Just as she was struggling for words, another group of people hurried over.
The man leading the group had gray hair but looked energetic and alert, with an anxious and worried expression.
When Maeve saw him, she smiled and waved, calling out excitedly.
"Steven, come quick and see who I found."
Steven Howard walked forward a couple of steps, took her hand, and his expression visibly softened.
"Who? I can't guess. Show me."
Maeve had wandered off, and Steven was clearly a worried person, but he didn't say anything.
Toward Maeve, all his emotions instantly melted away, gentle as if coaxing a child.
Compared to Ingrid's earlier attitude, Steven's care and tender affection for Maeve was silent yet moving.
And although Maeve's mind was unclear, she obviously relied heavily on Steven.
Scarlett suddenly felt envious of this kind of relationship - growing old together, never leaving each other's side.
A smile unconsciously appeared on Scarlett's face. Feeling a bit disdainful of Daniel beside her, she took the opportunity to push him away and stood to the side.
You really can't compare people!
Daniel's hand suddenly empty, his heart felt empty too. He was about to move closer to Scarlett again when Maeve pulled Steven over to Scarlett first.
Maeve said proudly, "Steven, I found our Sophia! Look, our daughter is carrying Ingrid."
"Steven, Ingrid is in Sophia's belly, so who is this Ingrid?"
Maeve pointed at Ingrid beside them, looking extremely confused.
Ingrid shook her head helplessly, "Grandma, I'm Ingrid. I've grown up this much. So how could she be my mother? Grandma, you've got the wrong person."
Maeve frowned, looking anxious and confused, gripping Steven's hand tightly.
Steven held her hand back, but his gaze stayed on Scarlett, frozen for a moment.
Scarlett wore a simple pink-orange lace blouse, casual wide-leg maternity pants, with a cream-colored cardigan over it. Her long hair was loosely pinned up with an ebony hairpin, a few curly strands falling by her cheeks, making her look even more gentle and serene, with refined and elegant features.
Her features and temperament, and the expression in her eyes, were very similar to his late only daughter Sophia.
But looking more carefully, Scarlett and Sophia weren't that alike after all.
Still, Steven had to admit that Scarlett before him was much more beautiful than Sophia.
"Child, you were the one who took care of my wife just now, right? Could we invite you to dinner to show our gratitude?"
Steven asked with a kind smile.
Before Scarlett could answer, Ingrid stepped forward and took Steven's arm.
"Grandpa, Ms. Lewis is obviously here at the airport for something, and that's Ms. Lewis's husband beside her. You and Grandma are tired from the flight. We have plenty of time - let's find another day to thank Ms. Lewis."
Before Steven could react, Maeve became anxious, pulling Steven's hand urgently.
"Steven, I'm not tired. I want to have dinner with Sophia!"
Steven met Maeve's pleading, panicked eyes. What principles could he have left? The hesitation on his face disappeared completely.
Steven immediately looked at Scarlett and Daniel, smiling at Daniel.
"So this is Mr. Wilson's Mrs. Wilson? Mr. Wilson, my wife really hit it off with your wife. Could we invite you both to a simple meal?"
Both being business figures, although Steven had long retired to the background and the Howard family business was now managed by Theron and Sophia's husband Delmar.
But Steven knew Daniel, having met him twice at summits before.
Daniel respected business veterans like Steven. Glancing at Theron and Ingrid beside them, Daniel nodded with a smile.
"Mr. Steven Howard and Mrs. Maeve Howard coming to Shadow City, I should be the one playing host. What's more, Mr. Theron Howard once saved my wife's life.
I've tried to express my gratitude twice, but Mr. Theron Howard declined both times. Mr. Theron Howard is so noble - surely today when my wife and I invite the Howard family, Mr. Theron Howard won't refuse again?"
Daniel looked at Theron.
Daniel had indeed sent Tom personally with generous gifts to see Theron before, and was indeed turned away.
Now Daniel and Theron's eyes met - one cold and deep, one cool and distant.
Theron smiled faintly, the tension dissolving into nothing.
"Mr. Wilson should ask Scarlett that question first, since it's her that my grandparents want to invite. As for me, of course I won't refuse."
Theron was clearly implying that Daniel was domineering and didn't respect Scarlett.
Daniel's eyes darkened slightly, and the atmosphere around him changed.
But Theron had already turned to Scarlett, his eyes smiling, his voice warm.
"Zara's flight is about to arrive. After picking her up and then going to dinner, won't you be tired? If it's too much, we could actually do it another day."
Everyone's eyes suddenly fell on Scarlett.
Theron's thoughtful manner made him seem more like Scarlett's husband.
Tom, standing behind Daniel, didn't dare look at Daniel's face anymore.
Daniel was really unlucky.
Daniel had been working on his image all this time, busy declaring his territory. What good was jealousy?
Theron treated Scarlett with no nonsense, and still appeared gentlemanly, thoughtful, and graceful.
Scarlett felt strangely pressured. Seeing that Scarlett was not speaking, Maeve became anxious.
"Sophia, let's go eat. I'm hungry. Come have dinner with mom." Maeve stepped forward and grabbed Scarlett's sleeve again.
Scarlett met Maeve's expectant yet uncertain gaze and felt inexplicably soft-hearted, unable to say words of refusal.
Scarlett thought maybe it was because Maeve had the same aura as Magnolia and Kennedy that made her feel close to her, unable to bear disappointing Maeve.
Scarlett nodded and said, "Okay, I'll pick up a friend and then have dinner with you, alright?"
Maeve immediately smiled happily. She looked at Daniel again, asking the question that had been puzzling her.
"Sophia, who is he? I don't know him."
Scarlett took Maeve's arm and said with a smile, "He's not important. I don't know him either."
Maeve looked at Daniel again, just catching his gloomy expression, and shook her head.
"Sophia, he's good-looking, but he looks like a cold and heartless person. He looks so fierce - maybe he even beats his wife. I have good judgment. Listen to me, let's stay away from him."
Daniel fell silent.
