Chapter 56 56

Chapter 56 56
Brooke stood outside of her car with a smile on her face. She was waving at Liam. "Goodbye sweetie. Have a great day." She called after him. She was standing by the car while Lima was walking towards the school entrance.

"I love you too, mommy." Liam said back and waved at her before running into the school.

It is the second day that Brooke brought Liam to school. He is so happy to have a little boon time with his mother. She will drop him off at school, go back home and get some more sleep. Wake up and go pick him up at school. They will have more time to spend together before she later leaves for the hospital. She is starting to get used to the new schedule.

However, she still has one thing bugging her in her mind. The weekend was approaching so fast. As she has promised to tell Liam about his father. She was scared as to what the outcome might be. Liam even reminded her of the promise she made that morning. The boy couldn't wait for the weekend to come.

Later that evening, Brooke arrived at the hospital. She was walking to her office when her father's secretary came up to her.

"I thought you were also on break." Brooke questioned. Her father works non stop and so does his assistant. Which is why anytime he is on break, she also gets to go on break.

"Yes but I had to come in today. It is important. I met doctor Patel and he told me to meet you." The assistant said.

"Ok. what is going on?" Brooke asked.

"A call came in from the organ center. They needed a patient to be reassessed as she needs a heart transplant urgently. The file is on your table. Please look into it." The assistant said. "Oh and this patient representative is already here. He is in your office waiting for you."

"I guess he couldn't wait." The assistant said with a shrug.

The two parted ways and Brooke walked to her office. She walked in and there he was. A man in a suit sitting and waiting. When she walked in, he got up to welcome her and introduced himself.

"Hello." Brooke said after walking in.

"Doctor Bee, hi. I am David Mark. I am representing a patient. I believe her profile has been presented to you. Her name is Gladys West." The man said.

"Right. I haven't reviewed it yet. You can leave your contact and I will get back to you immediately. I will go through it." Brooke said.

"Doctor, I don't mean to be pushy but if you may review it now, that will be great. It is a matter of life and death situation." The man insisted.

Brooke understood the desperation of the man. When you have a patient in a critical condition. You will do whatever it takes to try and get the patient immediate care.

Brooke went ahead to look into the patient's case. It is clear that the patient requires heart transplant. But there are other patients ahead of her that also needed it. Some even needed it more than her.

"Mr Mark. I have reviewed it and I am sorry to say. But the patient has to wait. It seems she can manage until her turn comes. Those that come before her are in more critical condition and have to be attended to first." Brooke explained in the most polite manner and understanding. But what she got in return took her aback.

"We have money. We can double the amount." The man said.

"Excuse me." Brooke asked in disbelief.

"We have money. A lot of it. How much do you want to move her name up on the list." He asked further.

"Well sir, this is not about wealth or how much you can put on the table. It's about who comes first, who is in more critical condition and a lot more. Many patients are on the waiting list. They are in such a critical condition that some of them die before we can get a donor. You can't tell me to overlook that and favor someone that came late and is not in that desperate need for surgery." Brooke tried to reason further.

"Doctor, I would advise you to look into the matter and consider my offer." The man insisted, as if he did not hear what she just explained.

"Mr Mark, I feel you did not listen to what I just said. But you cannot bribe me." Brooke said, still in a calm tone.

"Doctor Bee, I should warn you that the West is a very powerful family. You don't want to make enemies with them." The man warned.

"Are you trying to scare me or is that a threat?" Brooke asked. "This is a case where I don't have absolute authority to make the decision. Even if by any chance I suggest Miss West moved up on the list, the management has to look into it as well. From the condition of Miss West, they will reject my request. Because there are patients with more serious cases." Brooke explained again. The same thing she has been explaining for a while now. She is beginning to get irritated by it.

"I am sorry, I can't help you." Brooke said. She got up and walked to her office door and opened it." You have to go now. I need to get back to work." She stood, gesturing for him to leave.

The man got up and walked to the door.

"Please, have Miss West take her medication as prescribed. She should also stick to the doctor's advice and also maintain a healthy diet. With that, everything should be fine until it is her turn on the list." Brooke advised him before he left.

There was not much she could do. If there was a way to save all the patients, she would like that more than anything. But organs of the body, especially the heart are not things that you will find laying around.

Meanwhile, in a private suit at Emberwood hospital. The Leo family have settled in. Robert Leo is connected to a heart monitor while his wife is taking notes from a nurse.
