Sophia quickly jumped in with a forced smile, "Oh, I mean, Emily told me she’s not ready for kids yet." Deep down, Sophia was terrified that Emily might actually be pregnant with Michael's baby. She looked down, hiding the brief flash of coldness in her eyes.
In the bathroom, Emily couldn't hold it in anymore and squatted by the toilet, dry heaving and tearing up.
Michael, who had followed her in, suddenly felt queasy too. Watching Emily hug the toilet, he rushed to the sink, retching but not throwing up.
He glanced at Emily, who had stopped vomiting, and pressed his stomach, wondering if he'd been drinking too much lately. He stared at the back of her head, puzzled. 'Why am I feeling sick too? Am I just imagining things?'
After a bit, Emily stood up, using the toilet for support, and without looking at Michael, walked to the sink.
"Emily, what's going on? If you're not feeling well, why don't you go to the hospital?" he snapped, a bit annoyed.
Emily washed her hands and looked at him in the mirror, her face pale and eyes teary, like a broken doll that made you want to protect her.
"What's wrong with you? Are you sick?" Emily ignored his scolding and asked softly, noticing he had been retching too. 'Is he ill?' she wondered.
Michael met her gaze, feeling a sharp pain in his chest. "I should be asking you that. Why did you throw up?" he demanded, staring at her.
Emily felt a pang of guilt; she couldn't let him know she was pregnant. She had to act tough. "Mr. Smith, you said I forgot my role as Mrs. Smith. What about you? Have you forgotten your role as a husband?"
Michael's irritation flared, making him forget his earlier confusion. "Emily, I'm worried about your health. Don't change the subject."
"Thanks, but I don't need it." She didn't need his fake concern or pity. Emily kept a cold expression, turned, and opened the bathroom door. But before she could leave, Michael grabbed her wrist from behind.
The warmth of his hand made her heart skip a beat, but his next cold words cut deep. "When are you going to sign the divorce papers?"
Emily yanked her hand free and met his icy stare. "I will, but Mr. Smith, is this really the place to discuss our divorce?" Her voice was soft but firm, as if convincing herself.
Michael paused, realizing she was right. But hearing her agree to the divorce left him feeling uneasy. "Fine, and after dinner, go to the hospital for a check-up," he said, walking out ahead of her.
Emily clenched the hem of her shirt. 'He wants me to go to the hospital. Does he suspect something? No, I can't let Michael know I'm pregnant.'
As she was thinking of an excuse to avoid the hospital, Sophia suddenly appeared in front of her. "Emily, you don't look well. Are you pregnant?" Sophia asked, sitting in her wheelchair with a sarcastic tone.
Emily's eyelid twitched, but she quickly pulled herself together. "I'm married. Being pregnant is normal. Are you scared I might be?" She shot back with a cold snort.
Sophia had her suspicions about Emily being pregnant, but seeing her bluff now, she felt relieved. Emily must not be pregnant; otherwise, with her timid nature, she wouldn't dare talk back like this.
"Emily, you've changed a lot in the past two years, haven't you?" Sophia's suddenly relaxed tone made Emily more cautious.
"You haven't changed at all. Just like your mom, you still love being the other woman." Emily knew this wouldn't hurt Sophia because she and her mom believed that the unloved one was the third party. But she couldn't resist the jab.
Sure enough, Sophia didn't care and smiled slightly, her tone turning icy as she stared at Emily. "You took my Michael for two years. It's time to give him back, isn't it?"
Emily's hand clenched tightly at her side, but she smiled indifferently. "Sophia, you should read the marriage laws. Even if he's not my husband anymore, he's just a man I used and discarded. You really don't mind it?"
Sophia was taken aback, not expecting the once weak Emily to speak to her like this. Her eyes darkened. "Really? Since you have no interest in Michael, let me help you. Guess who Michael will believe later, you or me?"
Emily hadn't even processed her words when she felt her wrist being grabbed. Sophia managed to stand up, placing her hands on Emily's shoulders.
"Emily, let me explain. I really didn't seduce Michael." Sophia suddenly shouted loudly, looking aggrieved. Emily hadn't figured out what she was trying to do.
Emily instinctively frowned and stepped back, and Sophia suddenly let go of her shoulders and fell to the ground. Everything happened too quickly, giving Emily no time to think.
"Emily, I'm sorry. I won't dare again. Please don't hit me." Sophia suddenly looked at Emily in fear, and the people who came in saw Emily standing coldly beside her, while Sophia was on the ground with tears on her face. Clearly, the culprit was Emily.
"Emily, what are you doing?" Michael was the first to rush over, angrily questioning her.
If Emily didn't know what Sophia was up to by now, she would be really stupid. She coldly watched Sophia's lame performance, without any words.
"Emily, what did you do to our Sophia? Her leg is still recovering, how could you hurt her?" Evelyn Thomas, who had maintained her image as a noblewoman all evening, now spoke as if she wanted to eat her alive.
"Mom, Michael, it's all my fault. I shouldn't have made Emily angry. I just showed some concern, but she pulled me out of the wheelchair and accused me of seducing Michael." Sophia, now in Michael's arms, accused Emily with grievance.
"Emily, look at what you've done. If anything happens to Sophia, I won't let you off." Michael's face showed his concern for Sophia, making Emily feel suffocated.
He didn't even ask her before choosing to believe Sophia. Thinking about what she had said in front of Sophia earlier, she felt like a complete fool.
"Apologize to Sophia." Michael looked at her impatiently.
Emily suddenly smiled. Perhaps this was what it felt like when the heart was dead.
"I can apologize." Emily walked step by step to Sophia.
Sophia had been helped up but was still leaning on Michael.
