Chapter 49: A New Threat
The sudden blackout cast an eerie silence over the room. Rachel's breath caught as the hum of an engine grew louder, the noise cutting through the stillness like a warning.
Alexander moved instinctively, positioning himself between Rachel and the front door. His voice was calm but firm. “Stay here. Harris, check the windows.”
Detective Harris nodded, pulling out his flashlight and scanning the premises. Rachel’s heart pounded as she gripped the edge of the table. “What’s happening, Alexander? Who are they?”
He glanced back at her, his jaw tight. “I don’t know yet, but we’re not taking any chances.”
Moments later, the engine stopped, and the sound of car doors opening reached their ears. Harris returned, his expression grim. “Two men. Both armed.”
Rachel’s stomach churned. “Armed? What do they want?”
Harris shook his head. “Could be intimidation. Could be worse.”
Before they could decide on their next move, a voice called from outside. “Alexander Sterling! Rachel Green! Come out, and no one gets hurt!”
Alexander’s face darkened. He grabbed his phone and dialed security. “Lock down the property. No one gets in or out without my say.”
The next few minutes felt like hours, but the men eventually left, their threats echoing into the night. Alexander stayed tense until Harris confirmed the area was clear.

The morning after the attack, Rachel arrived at her office to find chaos waiting for her. Reporters crowded the front entrance, their cameras flashing, and their voices blending into a cacophony of accusations and questions.
“Ms. Green, what’s your response to the allegations?”
“Do you have a statement about the fraudulent contracts?”
Rachel’s heart sank. She pushed through the crowd with her assistant’s help, her mind racing. “What allegations?” she whispered to herself as they entered the building.
Once inside, Rachel was met with her COO, Miriam, who looked equally distressed. “We’ve got a problem,” Miriam said, handing Rachel a tablet.
Rachel scanned the headlines:
“Rachel Green Accused of Fraudulent Business Practices”
“Sterling Enterprises’ CEO’s Alleged Mistress Caught in Scandal”
Her throat went dry. “Where is this coming from?”
Miriam sighed. “Someone leaked fake documents claiming we forged contracts to undercut competitors. Clients are already calling, threatening to pull out.”
Rachel’s head spun. “Who could do this?”
“I think you know,” Miriam replied, her tone sharp.
Rachel’s thoughts immediately went to Victoria and her shadowy allies. But this time, it felt different—more calculated.

By the afternoon, Alexander arrived at Rachel’s office, his presence commanding as always. He didn’t waste time on pleasantries. “What’s the damage?”
Rachel handed him the tablet. “It’s bad. They’re targeting me directly.”
Alexander’s expression hardened as he scrolled through the articles. “This isn’t Victoria’s style. She’s reckless, but this—this is precise. Someone else is behind it.”
Rachel nodded. “But why go through all this trouble just to ruin me?”
“Because you’re a threat,” Alexander said simply. “And because they know attacking you weakens me.”
Rachel’s heart fluttered at his words, even as her frustration grew. “I don’t want to be your weakness, Alexander. I can fight my own battles.”
“And I’m not saying you can’t,” he replied, his tone softer. “But you don’t have to do it alone.”
For the first time that day, Rachel felt a flicker of hope.

Determined to find the source of the attack, Alexander called a meeting with Harris and his private investigator. The team worked late into the night, sifting through digital trails and following leads.
Rachel joined them, her eyes glued to her laptop as she searched for patterns in the leaked documents. Hours later, Harris leaned back in his chair, his expression triumphant.
“We’ve got something,” he announced. “The documents originated from an email server linked to Victor Lang, the CEO of Lang Corp.”
Rachel’s brow furrowed. “Victor Lang? I don’t even know him.”
Alexander sighed. “He’s one of my oldest rivals. If he’s targeting you, it’s because he sees you as an extension of me.”
Rachel’s frustration boiled over. “So this is about you? Not me?”
“It’s about both of us,” Alexander said firmly. “And now we know who we’re dealing with.”
\---
Over the next few days, Alexander and Rachel worked side by side to counter the attacks. Together, they issued statements, contacted clients, and strengthened their networks.
Their late nights in the office led to quiet moments of vulnerability. One evening, as they reviewed their progress, Rachel leaned back in her chair, exhaustion etched into her features.
“I don’t know how much more of this I can take,” she admitted.
Alexander reached across the table, taking her hand in his. “You’re stronger than you think, Rachel. And I’m not going anywhere.”
Rachel’s eyes softened, her walls momentarily crumbling. “Thank you, Alexander.”

By the end of the week, their combined efforts had turned the tide. Clients began to trust Rachel again, and Victor Lang’s involvement was exposed.
But just as things started to settle, an email arrived in Rachel’s inbox.
The subject line read: “You can’t hide the truth forever.”
Rachel clicked it, her breath hitching as she read the contents. Attached was a single photo—a blurry image of her, Alexander, and Odegaard at the park, circled in red ink.
Underneath, a single sentence chilled her to the core:
“They deserve to know.”
Rachel stared at the screen, her pulse racing as her mind tried to process the implications. Who sent this? And what did they mean by "They deserve to know"?
Alexander, noticing her pale face, moved closer. “Rachel? What’s wrong?”
She turned the laptop toward him, her fingers trembling. He leaned in, his jaw tightening as he scanned the image and the cryptic message.
His voice was calm but laced with steel. “This isn’t just a warning. It’s a threat.”
Rachel swallowed hard. “But who sent it? And why now?”
Before Alexander could respond, Harris burst into the room, his phone in hand. “We’ve got a problem. One of my contacts just flagged something—there’s a leak about Odegaard.”
Rachel’s stomach dropped. “A leak? What kind of leak?”
Harris hesitated. “His paternity. Someone’s feeding the media rumors that Alexander isn’t his father.”
The air grew thick with tension. Alexander’s eyes darkened, a storm brewing within them. “This ends now,” he said, his voice low and resolute. “Whoever’s behind this won’t get away with it.”
Rachel nodded, her resolve hardening. “We’ll face this together. For Odegaard.”
Harris gave a curt nod. “Then we move quickly. I’ll track down the source of the email and the leak. In the meantime, you two need to prepare for whatever’s coming next.”
As they strategized their next steps, Rachel felt the weight of the situation pressing down on her. But when she looked at Alexander, she saw not just determination but a fierce protectiveness that gave her strength.
No matter what came next, they were in this together.

Later that night, as Rachel sat in her study, trying to piece together the puzzle, her phone buzzed with a new notification.
It was a news alert: “Breaking: Shocking Allegations About Sterling Heir Revealed.”
Rachel’s heart sank as she clicked on the link, the headline flashing before her eyes: “Sterling
Family Scandal: The Truth About Odegaard’s Parentage.”
The screen blurred as tears filled her eyes. How much more could she take?
