Chapter 6 – Coffee and Shadows
The morning sun streamed through Isabella's apartment window, painting the floor golden hues. She had woken early, but her heart was already racing, as if the simple commitment of that day was greater than any important office meeting.
She put on a light-colored, lightweight blouse and an elegant skirt that clung to her body without being too daring. She wanted to look natural, but she couldn't help but feel anxious. As she fixed her hair in the mirror, she took a deep breath, trying to convince herself it was just coffee.
"Just coffee… with Alexander. That's all."
But with each repetition, it sounded less convincing.
\### The Meeting
When she walked down to the company entrance, Alexander was already there. Standing, checking something on his cell phone, he exuded his usual imposing presence. His black suit accentuated his impeccable posture, and his perfectly styled hair seemed to never lose its shape.
As soon as he saw her, he put away his cell phone and smiled in a way that made Isabella forget, for a moment, how to breathe.
"Good morning, Isabella." His firm voice held a natural elegance.
"Good morning, sir," she replied, trying to maintain her composure, but feeling her cheeks flush.
He tilted his head slightly, assessing her carefully, before extending his arm.
"Shall we go? I don't want you to be late for breakfast."
For a second, Isabella hesitated. Accepting that gesture felt too intimate, but at the same time... irresistible. With a small sigh, she rested her hand on his arm. The contact made her shiver inside, though she hid it with a shy smile.
\### The Cafe
They walked a few blocks to Cafe House, a place known for its understated sophistication. As soon as they entered, the unmistakable aroma of fresh coffee enveloped them. The room had yellowish lights, polished wooden tables, and soft music in the background.
Alexander, like a gentleman, pulled out Isabella's chair.
"Please," he said, waiting for her to sit down.
When he sat down across from her, he folded his hands on the table and smiled, not like the rigid CEO she knew, but with a lighter smile.
"I wanted to thank you again for yesterday. Solving that problem so quickly… it was impressive."
Isabella shrugged, trying to hide her satisfaction.
"Oh, it was nothing. But I imagine without me you'd be completely lost."
Alexander let out a short but sincere laugh. The sound seemed to draw the attention of those nearby, and Isabella noticed a few people glancing sideways, curious about this man who looked like he'd stepped out of a business magazine.
"We probably would be," he agreed, still smiling. "You have talent, Isabella. But tell me... it's not just work that matters, right? What do you like to do outside of here?"
She held the freshly poured cup of coffee, blowing off the steam before taking a sip. She thought for a few seconds before answering.
"I like simple things... reading, walking aimlessly, sometimes writing. I think about traveling, seeing other places, but I've never had the courage to actually plan."
Alexander rested his chin on his hand, watching her with genuine interest.
"Simple, but charming," he commented, with that corner of his mouth that made Isabella look away. "I bet that, if I wanted to, I could turn any moment into something extraordinary."
She blushed, joking to ease the tension.
"You speak as if you've known me for years."
"Maybe I see things others don't," he replied, a serious glint in his eyes.
Isabella frowned in surprise.
"What do you mean?"
Alexander leaned forward slightly, moving closer.
"I see you have a quiet determination. That you smile, but keep things hidden. And that, even in the face of difficulties, you don't give up."
Her heart raced.
"How... did you notice that?" she asked quietly, almost as if afraid of the answer.
"It's impossible not to notice," he replied firmly but gently. "And that only makes me want to know you even more."
For a moment, Isabella lost herself in his gaze. The world around her seemed to shrink, leaving only the table, the aroma of coffee, and that intense connection.
The conversation flowed naturally. Isabella discovered that Alexander had played the piano since he was a teenager, that he had a dog named Max, and that, on his rare days off, he enjoyed cooking elaborate dishes. The idea of a man like him—so serious, so impeccable—wearing an apron in the kitchen made her laugh.
Alexander, for his part, seemed fascinated to hear about the little things in her life: favorite books, unfulfilled dreams, childhood memories. He didn't just listen, he truly paid attention, reacting to every detail with interest.
"You know, Isabella…" he said at one point, his gaze fixed on her, "you have the gift of transforming even the simplest details into something captivating."
She laughed softly, trying to hide how much the phrase affected her.
"You're full of pick-up lines, aren't you?"
"Only when the situation warrants it," he replied, with that smile that seemed to carry secrets.
Isabella took another sip of coffee, trying to calm her heart. It was increasingly clear that this encounter wasn't just casual. Alexander wanted to get to know her, wanted to win her over somehow. And deep down, she was tempted to let him.
\### The Interruption
It was then that something changed.
As she laughed at a silly memory about a messy report on her first day, Isabella noticed a strange movement out of the corner of her eye. A tall man in a dark coat was walking toward the table. His steps were firm but slow, and his eyes… fixed on her.
When his voice rang out, Isabella froze.
"Wow… you're that girl I saved that day, aren't you?"
The husky, intense tone echoed through the café, making a few people look up immediately.
Alexander raised his eyebrows, turning to face the newcomer. His expression changed: his elegant smile dropped and he assumed a more serious, suspicious posture.
Dante Navarro stopped in front of the table, his shadow stretching over them both. His penetrating gaze alternated between Isabella and Alexander, but there was something possessive, almost challenging.
"With a knight like that…" Dante continued, his voice thick with irony, "and he can't even save you when needed."
Isabella swallowed, her mind whirling. It was as if two realities collided: Alexander's sophisticated calm and Dante's overwhelming presence.
Alexander's smile disappeared completely. He straightened in his chair, keeping his tone restrained but clearly tense.
"Who are you?" he asked firmly.
Dante tilted his head, as if he had already expected the question.
"Someone who appears when she needs him," he replied, without taking his eyes off Isabella.
Her heart was pounding so hard it seemed to echo in her ears.
The atmosphere in the café changed in an instant. The hubbub at the other tables died down, as if everyone sensed the tension. Isabella felt torn: on one side, Alexander's confident charm; on the other, Dante's dangerous intensity.
And in the midst of that silent dispute, a thought shivered:
"Why does my heart react so strongly to both of them?"
