Chapter 64: The Toughest Decision
Lyra's POV
A death sentence reverberated across the room as the door was knocked. Damian's gaze remained fixed on mine, a mute appeal etched on his face. Outside, everything had vanished. I was alone with him. However, that knock and the abrupt disruption broke the delicate bubble of tranquility we had established.
For a minute I stood motionless, not knowing what to do or how I felt. The passion we had shared and the fire that had flared between us still made my heart race. However, as reality began to set in, I noticed a chill spread across my skin.
I felt the heat from Damian's touch radiate up my arm as his hand grounded me. Although his body was taut, like a coiled spring, ready to break, his fingertips were warm.
With a voice that was hardly audible above a whisper, I replied, "You should answer it."
At first, his gaze remained fixed on mine and he did not move. "Do you want me to go outside?" Although his voice was low and bordering on threatening, it also had another quality. Maybe fear? Or was it something more profound, something I couldn't identify?
I said, "I'm not sure what I want." I was unable to stop the words from spilling out. "I don't know what to do anymore, Damian."
His jaw tightened, and I noticed the glimmer of agony in his eyes. He felt what I was saying, not just what I was saying. We both worried yet were unable to avoid the depth of my uncertainty, which I could see in his face.
With a gruff voice, he responded, "I'll do whatever you need." I could see, though, that he shared my uncertainty.
I shook my head and took a small step back, attempting to put some distance between us. "I'm not sure what I need at the moment, Damian. I'm not sure whether I can forgive you. You have wounded me and deceived me. I am uncertain if I will be able to get over it.
I saw the raw, exposed vulnerability in his eyes for the first time in weeks as his hand fell to his side. In a low, almost begging voice, he said, "I didn't mean to hurt you." "I have made a lot of mistakes. I believed that what I was doing was correct. But now I see... I realize now that I have ruined everything.
I shook my head. "I'm not sure how we can resolve this, Damian. I'm not sure whether I can trust you anymore.
It hurt to say it, but it was the truth. A delicate thing, trust had been shattered the instant I learned of the deception, the manipulation, and everything else. The secrets that had gradually come to light between us were all worse than the previous.
It knocked again, louder than before. Walking to the door with heavy steps and tense shoulders from aggravation, Damian muttered a curse. His face was stern as he gently opened it and saw Liam standing there.
Liam whispered in a hushed voice, his eyes darting between Damian and me, "There's been a problem."
"What type of problem?" With his voice suddenly in business mode, Damian asked. But the tension still coiling in his muscles was revealed by the edge in his voice.
Liam was slow to respond. He went inside instead, looking back at the entrance as if to make sure we weren't being followed. Behind him, he closed it silently. "It's about your mother," he finally stated.
Damian tensed his face. "What about her?"
After a moment of hesitation, Liam turned to face me. I could see the tension that was unsaid lingering in the air, the warning in his eyes. "You should probably take a seat."
I didn't require a second explanation. A thousand questions were flying through my head, and my heart was already pounding, but none of them felt genuine or important. What could be worse than all that had already occurred?
Damian's voice was firm and authoritative as he urged, "Sit," but his eyes never left mine.
I tried to gather my thoughts and headed toward the couch, looking back at him. His fingertips brushed mine again as he sat down beside me, following me. His touch simultaneously reminded me of everything I desired and everything I had been trying to get away from.
Across from us, Liam shifted his eyes uneasily. After struggling to find the appropriate words, he finally spoke.
"It's bad, Damian," Liam remarked quietly. Something is being planned by your mother. A significant thing. Something capable of destroying everything.
As the words struck me like a physical blow, my stomach fell. "What are you saying?" I said in a whisper.
Liam went on, "She has been working behind your back with someone." "A deal is being negotiated that could wipe you out and remove all you've worked so hard to achieve. It is a trap.
Damian's face turned pale, and his angry eyes narrowed. “What’s the deal?”
"A business transaction," Liam answered. Although it's all quite difficult, your mother is deeply involved. She has been manipulating things behind the scenes by utilizing your name and business. Damian, she's been having fun with you.
A rush of pity for Damian washed over me as I turned to face him. I recognized his expression all too well; it was a mix of betrayal and rage, but more than that, what hurt my heart was his helplessness.
"Are you sure?" Damian's voice was hardly audible above a whisper, as though the inquiry was too heavy to handle.
Liam gave an eminent nod. I have viewed the documents. She has a variety of interests outside of business. This is about more than just money. This has to do with power.
Damian abruptly rose and ran a hand through his hair, obviously attempting to take it all in. "I must see her." I need to face her.
“No.” Liam moved forward, seemingly attempting to stop himself with his outstretched hand. Not quite yet. We need to be fully aware of her plans before you attack. There may be a trap here.
My chest was tight when I stood up. "You need to exercise caution, Daniel. Nobody is trustworthy. Not even her.
At that moment, he gave me an unreadable glance. "How about you, Lyra? Ho d mutual trust?
I was momentarily unable to breathe because the words hurt. "What do you ask me?" The weight of the decision before me made my heart ache, so I mumbled.
Damian softened his gaze. "I beg you to have faith in me Too pick me. I'm aware of my mistakes, yet I can't let you go.
I stepped back and shook my head, my eyes watering. "I'm not sure what we could have left," I answered, my voice cracking now. "I'm not sure whether it's worth it."
With a trembling hand, he reached for me and caressed my arm. “Please, Lyra.”
The world paused for a moment. All we could hear was the storm roaring outside and the sound of our breathing. I had a thousand ideas running through my head, but my heart—my damaged heart—knew what it wanted. But was it that easy?
And then, suddenly, the door sprang open.
When we turned, our eyes widened, but Liam wasn't there.
It was an unknown individual.
Familiar with battered face and terrified eyes. He had a piece of crumpled and ripped paper in his hand, and he was breathing in quick, frantic gasps.
"Damian," the man uttered in a quivering voice. You must watch this. It concerns your mom. They took her, they did.
