Chapter 49
Alex
Alex was sullen. His mood was jealous and sour. He had been in a funk since “the incident” and he wasn’t sure how to pull himself out of it. He was starting to get on his own nerves.
After he saved Wendi’s life, he really thought she would look at him like he was her hero. He thought he would get to take her home for a happily ever after. He never expected to be completely shut out. She has been so angry and upset, she’s slept on the side of the bed forcing him to sleep next to his stupid oaf of a brother.
To make matters worse it looked like Leo had spent the day making up with her. His brother got a hug when she rolled a strike and all he managed to get was rammed repeatedly by her in bumper cars. He was pissed.
There was a moment when he had thought things were going to improve. Leo had managed to convince Wendi to return to Blackrock when Senior field day ended. As they exited the building, Wendi completely bypassed the car door Alex had tried to open for her. Instead, she opened the passenger backseat for herself and climbed in beside Leo. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and had a stupid grin on his face as he drapped himself over her body.
Alex watched angrily as Leo whispered into her ear seductively. She closed her eyes, as she leaned into Leo’s shoulder. For the first time since they agreed to share Wendi, Alex really felt like a third wheel.
He wanted to punch Leo in his smug mouth, but Alex knew that he had no one to blame but himself. He hadn’t said a word to her all day. He hated the chasm his father had created between him. Alex desperately wanted to talk to her, he just couldn't think of anything intelligent to say. So instead of fixing things with her, he settled with pouting.
“Leo, could we go to that sweetshop and get ice cream when we get home?” Wendi asked dreamily.
Leo leaned down and kissed her. He intertwined the fingers of the hand not on her shoulder with hers romantically. “Of course, my Cariad. I would be honored to accompany such a beautiful lady”
Alex punch the steering wheel like an idiot. His brother sure was laying it on thick! As soon as he pulled the SUV into the parking garage, he got out and stomped towards the woods. He didn’t want to have to watch his brother making time with his mate.
“I’m going for a run” he growled through the link. He saw Leo flinch out of the corner of his eye.
Alex walked into the wood line out of Wendi’s sight. He stripped off his clothes and transformed into his large black wolf. His wolf was silent, as his large feet struck and clawed at the ground beneath them. Alex knew that his wolf was pissed at him and at Adam.
Alex took off to the edge of pack lands. He decided it would be a great time to do a surprise inspection of the border patrol. He also took the opportunity to consider an appropriate punishment for what Adam has done.
He had almost managed to run the entire boundary of the pack before he received a link from Leo. “We are on our way back to the Pack house. Can you meet us? Wendi wants to see you right quick.” Alex made a beeline back and threw on his jeans and blue polo shirt before entering the house.
Alex was pleased to find Wendi sitting at the bar. She was completely alone. She smiled when he came into the room. She held up a pink and white striped bag that he recognized from his favorite sweetshop.
“I brought you a peace offering.” Wendi said in a very shy voice.
Alex stepped closer to her than he had been in days. He greedily opened the bag to see what she had chosen for him. He reached deep into the bag pull out a double scoop butterscotch Sunday with Butterfinger sprinkles. His eyes lit up.
“The shopkeeper told me this is your favorite.” Wendi looked pleased with herself. Alex leaned in a placed a tentative peck on her lips. To Alex’s relief, she smiled.
He grabbed the long plastic spoon out of the bag and opened the clear ice cream container. He took a scoop of ice cream from the top and popped it into his mouth.
“Oh Enaid, that is sooo good.” He rubbed his belly happily. “This is so perfect. Thank you for such a wonderful gift. George gave you good advice, this is my favorite.”
He took another scoop of ice cream and offered it to her. She opened her mouth and let him feed her. Watching her lick ice cream off the spoon was quickly causing him to become aroused. He continued to alternate giving her bites and taking a few for himself. Occasionally he would sneak in kisses between mouthfuls.
After they had finished the ice cream, Leo returned as if on cue. He had his arms full of takeout bags from a local diner. Wendi pointed to the empty ice cream container, and Leo shrugged.
“Everyone should eat dessert first, every now and then, besides I had to do something to make up for the really terrible pizza served at lunch.” Leo said as they all laughed.
After dinner Wendi yawned and asked if they could cuddle on the couch and watch movies. Alex was elated, it almost felt like old times again. He put his hand against his spot on her back as they headed into the living room. Leo disappeared to make popcorn.
By the time that Leo walked into the pack living room, Alex had already settled Wendi across his lap. He had a comedy cued up on the big screen and was running his nose along Wendi's neck. Leo picked up a fluffy chenille throw and draped it across Wendi’s lap before he handed her the oversized bowl of popcorn. He sat down next to Alex and pulled her feet into her lap.
Wendi settled back against Alex’s chest. She let out a happy sigh and snuggled against his neck. It was the first time all day that things felt right for him. He began to rub her back and run his fingers through the ends of her hair. Leo rubbed her feet and Alex watched as her eyes began to get heavy. The movie had barely gotten started when Wendi fell into a deep sleep. Alex kissed her forehead softly and smiled.
