Chloe feared that Jacob might return soon and play another dirty trick. She said to Brayden, "Let's hurry and leave, I'm afraid of Jacob coming back."
"Don't worry, I'm here. You rest first."
"No, we can't. You don't understand Jacob. He might be plotting against both of us," Chloe insisted as she got out of bed. She was wearing a white dress, seemingly pure and simple, but now it clung to her wet body, revealing her silhouette and making for an awkward moment.
Brayden caught a glimpse and quickly turned away, his ears reddening. He took off his jacket and draped it over her.
Downstairs at the hotel, Brayden wanted to make sure Chloe got home safely. She worried about dorm mates seeing her and possibly gossiping with Donovan, so she said, "No need, thank you."
"Are you sure you'll be okay on your own?" Brayden was concerned.
"It's just a short walk. I'll manage," Chloe said, mustering a pained smile.
"I'd better accompany you," Brayden insisted, fearing she might encounter more trouble.
As they were insisting back and forth, they were suddenly interrupted by the sound of a car horn twice from the side of the road!
Chloe turned her head and immediately went pale.
It was Donovan's car.
"Mr. Blake, what brings you here?" Chloe's unwarranted guilt washed over her.
Donovan looked grim, his gaze piercing as he looked them over.
His wife, with another man at the hotel entrance, tugging on each other's arms, wearing the coat of a man he didn't recognize!
At that moment, Donovan was furious. His voice laced with anger, "Having a secret rendezvous here?"
Chloe was at a loss for words and scared, desperately wanting to explain the misunderstanding.
But Brayden stepped in front of her protectively, standing firm against Donovan's intense look, "Who are you to question her? Do you have any idea what she's been through?"
Donovan glared back coldly, "It's not your place to be concerned!"
With that said, his eyes fixed coldly on Chloe, "Aren't you coming?"
Chloe quickly pulled away from Brayden: "Brayden, I'm sorry, I'll explain later."
She hurriedly ran to the car and obediently took her seat in the back. Donovan started the car and drove off swiftly. After a short while, the rear window of the car rolled down, and a man's jacket was thrown out.
Brayden was silent.
Chloe knew there had been a misunderstanding and quickly said, "Mr. Blake, please, let me explain. It's not what you think. Jacob tricked me into coming to the hotel, and then he drugged me. Brayden was just trying to help me."
While she was speaking, Chloe fumbled with her phone, trying to show Donovan the messages Jacob had sent her. But at that moment, Brayden happened to send a message: [Was that Donovan just now? Chloe, how did you get mixed up with him? Be careful, Donovan is bad news!]
Clearly, after they had left, Brayden had swiftly done some research on Donovan. "I'm not a good person?" Donovan let out a cold laugh. "And he is?"
He gave Chloe a contemptuous once-over, his annoyance growing. "So he's Brayden? Your boyfriend?"
Chloe felt like she was going crazy. she couldn't explain herself clearly. One lie needed a hundred lies to cover it up! She hastily deleted the message and then scrambled to find the messages from Jacob to show Donovan.
But Donovan wasn't interested in her explanation. He just asked, "Did you sleep with him?"
Chloe's heart skipped a beat, and a wave of humiliation washed over her. So this was what concerned him the most, she felt dirty to him. Biting her lip, she looked down and softly replied, "No."
"Good," was all he said, and after that, Donovan said no more.
Although she said nothing happened, Chloe felt that he didn't believe her. Probably, he did not continue to press the subject because he had other matters to attend to.
The drive to the company was silent. After getting out of the car at the company, Donovan instructed the driver, "Take her back to her dorm," and then he walked away coldly.
