Forty-three
Isabela

The day began with a heavy stillness that seemed to press down on everything. The house was unusually quiet, as if even the walls understood the importance of what was about to unfold. Miguel had been taken to a safe location with Clara, giving Gabriel and me the space to focus entirely on the final stages of our plan.

Gabriel was in his office, his eyes fixed on the array of screens displaying live feeds from his security team. His jaw was tight, and his fingers drummed against the desk in a steady rhythm. I stood behind him, arms crossed, trying to shake the unease that had settled in my chest.

“Everything is in place,” Gabriel said, not looking away from the monitors. “Laura’s team has submitted the documents, and the press is already buzzing with speculation. Now, we wait for André to make his move.”

“And if he doesn’t?” I asked, my voice quieter than I intended.

Gabriel finally turned to face me, his expression a mixture of determination and reassurance. “He will. People like André don’t back down quietly. He’ll try to protect himself, and when he does, we’ll be ready.”

I nodded, though the knot in my stomach didn’t loosen. The stakes felt higher than ever, and the weight of it all was almost suffocating.

By mid-afternoon, Gabriel’s prediction came true. A call came through from Laura, her voice sharp and hurried.

“André just filed an emergency injunction to suppress the evidence,” she said. “He’s claiming it was obtained illegally and is threatening to expose everyone involved in the investigation.”

Gabriel didn’t flinch. “And how’s the judge responding?”

“So far, the motion hasn’t been approved,” Laura replied. “But André’s influence is extensive. We can’t underestimate him.”

“We won’t,” Gabriel assured her. “Keep us updated.”

As he ended the call, he looked at me, his eyes alight with a fierce determination. “This is it. André’s making his play. Now it’s our turn.”

The next step involved contacting Ricardo Alves, the whistleblower who had provided the crucial documents. Gabriel and I arranged to meet him at a secure location to discuss his testimony. Laura joined us, bringing along a legal expert to ensure everything was handled properly.

Ricardo arrived looking even more nervous than before, his hands trembling as he clutched a briefcase.

“Is it safe?” he asked, his eyes darting around the room.

“You’re safe,” Gabriel said firmly, gesturing for him to sit. “We’ve taken every precaution.”

Ricardo nodded, though his anxiety was palpable. “I’ve been watching the news. André is already trying to spin the narrative. If he finds out I’m involved…”

“He won’t,” Laura interjected. “Your identity is protected, and the evidence you provided speaks for itself. But we need your testimony to solidify the case.”

Ricardo hesitated, glancing at Gabriel and me. “You promise you can protect me?”

“I give you my word,” Gabriel said, his tone leaving no room for doubt.

After a long pause, Ricardo nodded. “Alright. I’ll do it.”

That evening, back at Gabriel’s house, the tension was palpable. The legal process was underway, but the threat of retaliation loomed over us like a storm cloud. Gabriel’s security team patrolled the property, their presence a constant reminder of the danger we faced.

Miguel had returned home, his laughter a brief respite from the heaviness of the day. He played with his toys in the living room, oblivious to the weight of the world resting on our shoulders.

As I watched him, Gabriel came to stand beside me. “He’s the reason we’re doing this,” he said softly. “To give him a future free from fear.”

I looked up at him, my chest tightening at the sincerity in his voice. “And we will. We’ve come too far to back down now.”

Gabriel nodded, his hand brushing against mine. For a moment, the chaos around us faded, and it was just the two of us, united by a shared purpose.

Late that night, as Gabriel and I reviewed the latest updates from Laura, a notification popped up on his phone. He picked it up, his expression darkening as he read the message.

“What is it?” I asked, my heart racing.

“One of André’s men was spotted near the house,” he said, his voice low. “They’re watching us.”

Fear prickled at the back of my neck. “What do we do?”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened. “We don’t panic. The security team is handling it. But this proves André is getting desperate.”

I swallowed hard, trying to steady my breathing. “We can’t let him intimidate us.”

“We won’t,” Gabriel said firmly, placing a hand on my shoulder. “This ends soon, Isabela. I promise.”

His words were both a comfort and a reminder of the fight ahead. As we prepared for whatever came next, I clung to the hope that Gabriel’s promise would hold true.
