Chapter 27 - A Chance?

Isabella walked back and forth in the living room, the sound of her bare feet was gentle on the hardwood floors. The silence in the house was overwhelming without the usual sound of her twins' laughter and conversation. She looked at her watch once more, hoping the hands would hurry up.

Right before she could dial Ava's number once more, her heart skipped a beat at the sound of a car turning into the driveway. Isabella hurried to the front door and flung it open as Skylar and Mickey approached with excitement on their faces.

"Mom! "Mom!" they exclaimed in unison, almost stumbling over each other in their excitement to recount their adventure.

Isabella crouched down, embracing them both tightly in a hug. "Hello, my small munchkins," she greeted, taking in their usual perfume, now mixed with the pleasant smell of ice cream. "Did you enjoy yourself with Aunt Ava?"

Skylar nodded eagerly, her pigtails bouncing with excitement. "Mom, we had such a great time!" Can you believe it? "We meet your work partner again!"

"Work partner? Austin?" Isabella asked confused.

"No mommy, the one who saved me. The one we meet in your office today."

Isabella experienced her body becoming rigid, with her breath getting stuck in her throat. "Xavier?" she uttered, trying to keep a steady voice.

"Do you mean... The guy in the traffic?" She asked looking at Mickey.

Mickey chimed in, his glasses slightly askew from his energetic nod. "Yeah! He came to the ice cream shop and played games with us. He even bought us take-home ice cream!"

As if on cue, Ava appeared behind the children, holding three pints of ice cream. Her expression was a mixture of apology and something else... amusement?

"I'm sorry, Bella," Ava said softly. "It was a complete coincidence. He just happened to stop by the shop while we were there."

Isabella got up gradually, her thoughts spinning. "It's... it's fine," she said, leading everyone indoors. "Could you both go clean yourselves?" After that, you can tell me everything about your ice cream with Mr Stone."

While the twins ran away laughing and reminiscing about their ice cream adventures, Isabella looked at Ava. She asked softly, her voice barely audible, "What happened?."

"Did he mention anything about..."

Ava placed a reassuring hand on Isabella's arm and shook her head. "No, Bella. He doesn't know. He just thinks they're your kids, nothing more."

Isabella released a breath she hadn't been aware she was holding. "Are you sure?"

Ava gave a nod, her lips curved in a slight smile. "Positive. But Bella... the way he looked at them. It was pure adoration, even without knowing they're his."

Isabella collapsed onto the sofa, her legs becoming unexpectedly weak. "What do you mean?"

Ava sat next to her, speaking softly yet sincerely. "I'm saying, the Xavier I saw today... he's different, Bella. And based on my observation, it's an improvement."

Before Isabella could reply, the twins rushed back into the room, their clean faces full of excitement as they were eager to tell their story.

"Mom! Mom! You won't believe what your partner did!" Skylar exclaimed, climbing onto the couch next to Isabella.

Mickey nodded vigorously. "Yeah! He played this awesome game where we had to guess ice cream flavors while blindfolded!"

Isabella spent the next hour listening to the twins recount stories from their afternoon. They discussed Xavier's over-the-top responses to their ice cream selections, the funny expressions he put on, and his enjoyment of their jokes.

"We then," Mickey said with suppressed laughter, "made him taste the garlic and horseradish-flavored ice cream!"

Skylar suddenly erupted into laughter. "Mom, his facial expression was hilarious!" "You must have witnessed it!"

Isabella couldn't resist smiling at their eager excitement. Was it a side of Xavier she had never seen before - the fun-loving, carefree guy? Who could have predicted that Xavier Stone, out of everyone, would behave in that way?

Indeed, he has truly changed!

As the twins started to get sleepy, Isabella instructed them to prepare for bedtime. After they were far enough away to not be heard, she looked at Ava again.

She inquired, her voice showing signs of concern, "What should I do?" "What happens if he finds out?"

Ava took Isabella's hand, squeezing it gently. "Bella, I know you're scared. But the man I saw today... he's not the same Xavier from five years ago. He's changed, and from what I could see, it's for the better."

Isabella shook her head, conflicting emotions warring within her. "But how can I be sure? After everything that happened..."

"I'm not saying you should trust him immediately," Ava said carefully. "But maybe... maybe it's worth giving him a chance to prove himself?"

Before Isabella could respond, the twins called from upstairs. "Mom! Can we call Grandma Liz?"

Isabella was thankful for the diversion and went up the stairs. She discovered Skylar and Mickey in their pajamas, nestled in Skylar's bed with the phone all set.

Dialing Grandma Liz's number, Isabella smiled at their excitement. Liz had been on the road for the last few days, and the twins were longing for her deeply.

"Grandma!" they cried together when Liz's face popped up on the screen.

"Hello, my darlings!" Liz's soft tone echoed throughout the room. "Oh, those lovely faces, how I've longed for them!"

For the next twenty minutes, the twins tell their grandmother the story of their day, which included their surprise ice cream outing with Xavier.

Isabella observed Liz's face turn when Xavier's name was brought up, a blend of astonishment and perhaps optimism.

As the conversation ended and the twins started to get sleepy, Isabella kissed them goodnight and softly said "I love both of you."

Down in the lower level, she discovered Ava getting ready to go. "Are you sure you are feeling fine, Bella?" Ava asked, her voice revealing her worry.

Isabella nodded, forcing a smile. "I'm fine. Just... a lot to process, you know?"

Ava embraced her tightly in a hug. "I know." But don't forget, you have support in this journey. "Regardless of your choice, I am here to support you."

After Ava left, Isabella was left in solitude with her own thoughts. Curling up on the couch, she wrapped a soft throw blanket around her shoulders.

Her thoughts wandered back to the earlier meeting from that day. She had to acknowledge that the Xavier she observed in that meeting room was different from the man she knew five years ago. This Xavier had grown older, become more concentrated, more... able.

The passion in his eyes as he presented his ideas, the way he spoke about creating a better future - it had stirred something in Isabella that she thought was long buried.

But could she really give him another chance? After all the pain, all the broken promises?

Isabella's gaze fell on a framed photo on the mantel - a picture of her and the twins at the beach last summer. Their smiling faces beamed back at her, reminding her of everything she had to lose.

Yet, as she thought about the way the twins' eyes lit up as they talked about their afternoon with Xavier, she couldn't help but wonder... what if?

What if Xavier really had changed? What if he could be the father the twins deserved? What if...

Isabella nodded her head, attempting to clear her mind. Thinking about it at this moment felt overwhelming. Before she could consider allowing him into their lives, she required additional evidence to verify the new Xavier.

While preparing for bed, Isabella's mind was filled with contradictory thoughts and emotions. The Xavier she encountered today - in the meeting and from her kids' tales - was entirely unlike the person who had hurt her five years back.

Resting in bed, gazing at the ceiling, Isabella permitted herself to recall the happy memories. The manner in which Xavier used to bring a smile to her face, the way his eyes would crinkle at the edges when he grinned, the fervor he displayed in all his actions.

She was lost in her thoughts. Evenings are spent sharing meals and laughter as a family, weekends include trips to the park, and Xavier is busy teaching Mickey to throw a baseball or and helping Skylar with her science assignments.

However, then the harsh truth returned. His betrayal caused her immense pain, making her struggle alone for years and live in fear of being hurt again, all of which burdened her heart.

As Isabella started to drift off to sleep, she made a choice. She planned to handle things one day at a time. She would be careful, yet not shut off. She would observe, be patient, and determine if this supposedly transformed Xavier was indeed different.

And perhaps, only perhaps, she would permit herself to entertain hope. She hoped for a future in which her children could meet their father, where past hurts could be resolved, and where love could be given another opportunity.

With that idea in mind, Isabella fell asleep, hearing children's laughter and remembering Xavier's smile playing at the edges of her dreams.

She made up her mind. She's accepted the partnership proposal...For now! This is a start...
