Chapter 24: A glimmer of hope
Xavier checked his watch for the tenth time, his brow furrowed with concern. Isabella was late, very late. This is not her character.
He quickly looked over at his team gathered at the conference table, observing a blend of impatience and curiosity on their faces.
Mark, his secretary, leaned toward Mr. Stone. "You think it is best if we should reschedule?" He spoke in a low voice.
Xavier shook his head. "No, not yet. Give her a few more minutes."
He took out his phone and began typing a message: "I hope everything's alright. We're still here, waiting." His thumb hovered over the send button for a moment before he pressed it.
As time passed, Xavier was deeply lost in his thoughts, about the lucky meeting Isabella a week ago.
The excitement of seeing Isabella again after five years, rescuing the twins without knowing their identity, and the hurt of her rejection remained vivid in his mind. For him, this meeting meant more than just a business opportunity; it was a second shot at redemption.
Just then, the door flew open, revealing. Isabella Ricci, as beautiful as always, her face red from hurrying.
"I apologize for the delay," she said. "There was an urgent family matter. Thank you for your patience."
Xavier stood, feeling his heart beating rapidly. "No need to apologize, Isabella. Family always comes first. I hope everything's alright?"
Examining her expression closely, he sought out any indications of unease, recollecting the twins he had encountered previously.
Are they sick or something?
"Everything is good now, thank you," she mentioned, as she sat down at the head of the table. Acting in a professional manner. "Are we ready to start?"
Xavier nodded, pushing aside his personal feelings. This was a professional matter, he told himself. He began his presentation by detailing StoneTech's newest advancements and their potential to transform the fashion sector.
While talking, he couldn't resist looking at Isabella. There was something about her that seemed changed – more confident, more resilient. She had aged gracefully, and he was proud of her progress.
"Here," he indicated, pointing at a diagram, "is the location where we could integrate the smart fabric technology. Picture this clothing that adjusts to the wearer's body heat, reducing the need for multiple layers or frequent outfit changes."
Isabella leaned in, her eyes shining with curiosity. "That could be a game-changer for our athleisure line," she uttered, her voice laced with excitement.
Xavier felt a rush of joy upon hearing about her engagement. "Exactly! And it's just the tip of the iceberg. With our combined expertise, the possibilities are endless."
While he kept going, Xavier was engrossed in the flow of their communication. He desires to maintain this level of closeness, even when not working together. He has already made a mistake in the past. However, he desires to make a change.
All of a sudden, a commotion outside the conference room caught everyone's attention. Xavier saw Isabella's face pale as she excused herself and rushed out.
From behind the glass walls, he saw her talking to two kids. He watched as she knelt down, warning them, it was the twins he had met before. His breath caught in his throat as the realization hit him again.
He doesn't know who their father is. But, they are still Isabella's children.
Xavier got up and walked to the door without any thought. "Is everything okay here?" he inquired softly.
Xavier bent over to the same height as the children, feeling his heart beating fast as he realized they were the twins he had encountered a few weeks earlier. "Who are these little explorers?" He asked, trying to keep his voice steady.
Skylar's eyes suddenly became wide with recognition. Immediately, she flung herself towards Xavier, who automatically caught her in his arms.
She exclaimed, her face brightening with joy, "It's you!" She said hugging him.
"The nice man from the store who protected me!"
Mickey, not to be outdone, jumped forward as well, his eyes shining with excitement. "And you bought us Awana pop!" he added with a smile. "You were the one in the traffic too, remember Sky?"
Xavier, briefly surprised by the kids' excitement, softly embraced Skylar and tousled Mickey's hair. A blend of feelings appeared on his face – happiness for reuniting, jealous of who their father might be. But he began to be close to them.
"That's right," Xavier murmured. "I'm glad you both remember me."
As Skylar turned to look at her mother and asked if Isabella had forgiven him, Xavier felt his heart constrict. He watched Isabella's face carefully, seeing the shock and discomfort his presence was causing her.
Sensing the tension, Xavier gently set Skylar down and crouched to the twins' level again. "Actually," he said softly, trying to help Isabella out of the awkward situation, "I'm just a friend of your mom's. We knew each other a long time ago."
As the twins continued to ask questions, Xavier found himself torn between the joy the kids accepted him and the pain of who their father might be. He watched Isabella struggle to find words, wishing he could ease her discomfort somehow.
When Mickey asked if Xavier was there to play with them like Uncle Austin, Xavier felt a pang of jealousy mixed with anger.
Is he really their father?
Trying to steer the conversation to safer ground, Xavier explained, "Actually, I'm here to help your mom with work."
Skylar's sharp inquiry about why they hadn't encountered him earlier as Isabella's friend deeply affected Xavier. Gazing at Isabella, he noticed the fear in her eyes, understanding the fragility of the situation.
Isabella led the children away with the offer of cookies, leaving Xavier with a deep feeling of emptiness. He observed them leaving, committing to memory all the features of their faces, their voices, their behaviors.
Upon Isabella looking back at him, Xavier found it difficult to control his emotions. "He softly told Isabella that they are amazing children, truly meaning what he said." "You've done a fantastic job raising the twins."
When they got back to the meeting, Xavier struggled more and more to concentrate on work. He couldn't stop thinking about the twins, the time he missed, and the potential family.
During the presentation, he couldn't help but sneak quick looks at Isabella, impressed by the strong, confident woman she had turned into. When she displayed curiosity about his ideas, he felt a spark of optimism. Perhaps this collaboration could be the initial move in restoring what they had lost.
"They're amazing children, Isabella," he whispered gently. "You've done an amazing job with them."
The remainder of the meeting slipped by in a haze. Xavier discussed his thoughts on autopilot, his mind still in a whirl with thoughts of the children.
Every part of him desired to remain, converse with Isabella, and build a stronger relationship with her children. However, he was aware that he needed to be cautious.
After the meeting ended, he stayed back with his team. He spoke gently to Isabella, "Just wanted to tell you... seeing you with your children brought back memories of the dreams you shared with Grandma." I am genuinely happy for you.
He struggled to refrain from mentioning the identity of their fathers, fearing it might be that of Bastard Austin. He desired to ask for forgiveness, for an opportunity to be included in their lives.
"Xavier, I appreciate it," Isabella responded. "They are everything to me."
He gave a nod while making himself smile. "As they should be. I hope... I hope we can find a way to work together, despite our past. I think we could create something truly amazing."
As he prepared to depart, feeling burdened, Isabella called to him. "Is that Xavier?"
He stopped briefly, feeling a surge of hope in his heart.
"I will... I will discuss it with my team. I believe you could be correct. This might be the beginning of a significant development.
Xavier's smile that appeared was truly authentic on this occasion. Although it wasn't complete, it served as a beginning.
He could only offer those words for now, even though they didn't feel sufficient. When he started to go, Isabella saying his name made his heart jump. Her hesitant approval to contemplate the partnership seemed like a saving grace.
As Xavier walked to his car, his thoughts swirled with potential outcomes. This is a positive move. He had another opportunity to collaborate with Isabella. It wasn't the entire thing, but it served as a beginning.
While seated in his car, Xavier crafted a message to Isabella, selecting his words with precision. After sending the message, he leaned back and closed his eyes.
Xavier Stone experienced a surge of hope in his chest for the first time in five years.
No matter what came next, he was committed to fixing things – for Isabella, her children, and reuniting as a family.
