Chapter 254: Farewell
Carol gently held Daisy's small hand and said softly, "I'll miss you too, Daisy."
Sophia watched quietly from the side, feeling a warm sensation in her heart. Even though she couldn't bring Carol and David together, she could at least make sure Carol and Daisy stayed close.
"Alright, Daisy, say goodbye to Ms. Elise. It's time for us to go," Sophia gently reminded.
Reluctantly, Daisy let go of Carol's hand and turned to wave. "Bye, Ms. Elise! See you next time!"
"Bye, Daisy!" Carol responded with a smile.
They exchanged a warm smile.
As Daisy and Sophia slowly walked towards the park's exit, Carol stood on the grass, bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. Her eyes followed Daisy and Sophia's retreating figures, feeling a pang of sadness. Daisy's small figure shone brightly in the golden light, like a warm ray of sunshine in her heart.
Daisy chatted excitedly with Sophia, occasionally turning back to wave at Carol, her face beaming with a bright smile.
Carol felt a surge of emotion, recalling the joyful moments she had spent with Daisy today. They had played on the seesaw, shared ice cream, and Daisy's laughter had flowed through her heart like a clear spring, dispelling the shadows within.
However, as Daisy's figure gradually disappeared, Carol felt a faint sense of loss.
Daisy was a lively little girl, and in the days to come, she would have more friends and more happiness. But at this moment, Carol felt an indescribable loneliness. She sighed softly, secretly wishing time could stand still, capturing this moment forever.
"Goodbye, Daisy," Carol whispered, knowing Daisy couldn't hear her, but she said it anyway. She waved slightly, as if trying to convey her feelings to the distant figure.
As Daisy and Sophia's figures faded from view, Carol felt a wave of melancholy.
She turned around, took a deep breath, and tried to calm herself.
Goodbyes were a part of life. This wasn't the first time she had parted with Daisy, and it probably wouldn't be the last. Even though Carol didn't want to intrude on Daisy's life, she knew that with Sophia around, she would always find ways to bring them together.
Carol felt both hopeful and ashamed.
She wasn't a good mother, but Daisy was a wonderful daughter.
As the park grew quieter in the evening, Carol sat on a bench, still savoring the happy moments with Daisy. Just as she was lost in warm memories, her phone buzzed. She picked it up and saw a message from Sophia.
[For Daisy's sake, how about staying at Fortune Law Firm?]
Carol read the message and could already picture the smug smile on Sophia's face. She had always thought she disliked Sophia, but after spending an afternoon together, she realized that if Daisy grew up to be like Sophia, it wouldn't be so bad.
Still, she didn't want to work with Sophia.
Carol's fingers tapped on the screen, struggling to compose a reply. After several attempts, she finally sent a brief response: [No.]
Sophia saw the new message notification on her phone.
She quickly picked it up and read Carol's reply, feeling a bit disappointed. But then she noticed the time. Carol had taken five minutes to respond, which meant she had hesitated.
Sophia's efforts weren't in vain. She was determined to keep Carol in their firm.
On the way home, Sophia and Daisy chatted about the day's events, laughing constantly. Finally, they arrived at the faculty housing of Harmony City University and stood in front of Daisy's home. Sophia bent down slightly and gently knocked on the door.
The door opened quickly, and Sophia was stunned.
Standing there was David! Sophia couldn't believe her eyes. She rubbed them, thinking she must be seeing things. How could David be at Daisy's house? She stepped back and carefully checked the house number, confirming it was correct, then turned her gaze back to David.
She scrutinized him.
"Are you an actor playing David?" Sophia voiced her suspicion.
David couldn't be bothered to respond. What was going on in Sophia's head? After all these years together, she still couldn't recognize him?
"Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm the real David."
Yes, it was his familiar voice. No actor could mimic him so perfectly. It was really him! But...
"David? What are you doing here?"
"What? You can come here, but I can't?" David's eyes twinkled with amusement. He enjoyed seeing Sophia's surprised expression. It was much more pleasant than the lifeless look she had worn for the past four years.
This wasn't Sophia's house, so she couldn't control David's comings and goings.
But this was the home of Sophia's college professor, Wesley Waverly, and his wife, Alison Waverly, who had helped her a lot during her university years. As Wesley's top student, Sophia had become a frequent visitor to their home, which was how she and Daisy became friends.
Back then, Sophia didn't know Daisy was the child Carol had given up.
During her marriage to David, Sophia had cut ties with most of her past connections, including Wesley and Alison. After her divorce, she reconnected with them and became a regular visitor again.
Wesley and Alison were getting older and often lacked the energy to look after Daisy, so Sophia would help pick Daisy up from school whenever she could.
So what was the connection between David, a businessman, and Wesley, a world-renowned physicist?
At that moment, Daisy ran up from behind and, seeing David, excitedly jumped into his arms. "David, I'm back!"
David looked down at Daisy with a doting expression, his stern demeanor instantly replaced by tenderness.
Sophia watched quietly from the side. So David liked children this much. No wonder he cared so much about Emily.
Sophia couldn't help but wonder, if she told David she was also carrying his child, what would he do? Would he protect her like he did Emily? Or would he be indifferent? After all, David hated her. Would he hate a child born from a woman he despised?
Even if David treated her well for the child's sake, she didn't want that.
Love that wasn't pure was boring.
While Sophia was lost in her chaotic thoughts, Daisy, with her eyes sparkling, clung to David's arm.
"David, did you bring me a present?" Daisy's voice had a playful tone, and her face was full of anticipation.
