Chapter 114: The Least Saviour

Emma

It all happened so quickly. One minute I was speaking with Grandma, the next I was before the operating room with the glass door shutting me out. I couldn’t stop the tears from flowing down my face. It felt cold and silent despite the people around me. Grace was hugging me tightly, and there was Derek, who seemed to be on a phone call with someone. But all I wanted was the doctor to step out and tell me my Grandmother was fine.

She felt so cold, her eyes were closing, she wasn’t responding despite my yelling for her to wake up while they forced me out, and there was no way I wouldn’t be panicking.

“She’s going to be fine. You need to be strong for her, Emma.”

Would she? My mind reeled through every possibility, despite I didn’t want to have negative thoughts, I couldn’t help it, not after I had witnessed her body go limp. What if I lose her? What if she never made it out?

“What if she makes it out?” A calm soothing voice, along with warm hands, and the familiar mint scent that sent me relaxing into his arms. I wasn’t trembling anymore–I had totally broken into his arms, letting him hold me up. I felt myself being guided till we were seated. Liam never released me from his hold; instead, he began patting my back softly.

“You should think more of that. She’d hate to see you totally stressed out. She would need more fruits and lots of wool to knit. You should consider how to get it all because she is coming out there, alive and strong.”

His words lock the negative thoughts away instantly. And I lifted my eyes, which were blurred with tears, to meet his. He had a small smile on his lips, and it didn’t seem forced. He looked certain Grandma was going to make it, and it strengthened my hope.

In that same moment, the doctor had rushed out, and…there was blood. His gloves were painted with blood. I shot up to my feet and rushed to him, heart racing, nerves pulsating as I questioned.

“W-How, how is she?”

His expression didn’t look somber, but it wasn’t bright either. It seemed he was in a rush or something, and he kept looking past me.

“We can’t-” He halted, and swallowed, and without thinking, I grabbed him by the collar. Hell had broken loose, and I was about to do the most unimaginable.

“How can a fucking doctor say they can’t? What do you mean you can’t? So you left her there to die? What the fuck is wrong with you?! I will sue. I will sue you all!” Grace was trying to pull me away from him, begging me to listen to what he had to say, but I was blinded by rage and grief.

“That is not what I meant, ma’am, I mean–”

“Don’t waste your time on her; get back with the old woman.” A very familiar voice spoke from behind, then a woman from behind bowed a little at me, and returned into the operating room with the doctor.

“Mom?” Liam blurted, and all attention had turned to her. Even Liam had his eyes wide open. He was the first to approach her.

“What are you doing here?”

“Why, you think you can hide them forever?”

“I was keeping them away from your insanity.”

She let out a peal of laughter, throwing her head backward. “You really think so low of me, son, and that hurts.” The smile dropped as fast as it could. I was too confused to feel sorry for her. And right now, Grandma’s life was my priority; she could say shit, I already felt shitty enough, but if her presence here was to prevent my Grandmother from dying, I was ready to strip away my last pride.

“You’ve done nothing but bring trouble to the family of the woman I love, so you don’t expect me to think you are here with some good agenda.”

She rolled her eyes, settling on the steel bench Liama and I were seated on a few minutes ago. She crossed her legs with her usual elegance, showing off her expensive red bottom heels.

This time, I took the initiative, walking up to stand before her.

“How sure should I be?”

She lifted her gaze to meet mine. Her eyes were going almost dark, reminding me of how much she hated me.

“At least you figured it out. Dr. Sammy is the best in the nation. You could search that out. He’s never lost a patient. So be rest assured she’s safe in his hands… that is if the old lady is willing to return to you.” She shrugged.

I clenched my fist, feeling cold ice pour on me, but I had a certain kind of courage, knowing if I lost the one family I have left, I would go to the end of the world to make her pay, even if it meant using Liam.

“Don’t speak that way,”

“Don’t you think this would make your old lady want to live longer. Y’know, in case her soul is already floating around–”

“Mother–” Liam tried cutting in, but I held up my hand, stopping him, while my gaze was still fixed on the Singaporean woman.

“If she dies, you will bear the cross.”

“So I came to help, and now I’m the bad guy?”

“You hate me and my family; it's only fair, I think you brought someone to kill her just to offend me more.”

Her expression darkened. She had shot up to her feet and to face me head-on, but I didn’t back down. This was a mother desperate to have her son on her lap, and a girl who was on the edge of losing her last family; we both were trying not to lose what we held dearly to our hearts.

Her lips parted to speak, but no word came out as the door slid open and two doctors stepped out. I couldn’t trust their expression, so I pleaded.

“Please tell me she made it.”
