Chapter 24 Siege Ends
LISA'S POV
Viktor's rogue army hit Moonstone territory at dawn, their howls sent fear to every pack member. I stood on the Alpha stones with Ryan beside me.
The pack gathered behind us, warriors and healers and elders all united in defense of our home, and I felt their strength flowing through the Alpha connection.
The battle was shorter than I had expected and thankfully, less devastating. Viktor's rogues fought hard but without the desperate fury I had anticipated, almost as though their hearts were not fully committed to the violence. Within an hour, we had pushed them back to the clearing where Viktor himself stood waiting, his silver hair catching the early light and making him look older than I remembered.
"Enough," Viktor called, his voice carrying across the battlefield with Alpha authority that still commanded attention despite everything. "I wish to speak with the silver wolf. Alone."
Ryan growled, his protective instincts flaring hot through our bond, but I placed my hand on his arm. Trusting my own strength.
"Five minutes," I told Viktor, walking forward to meet him on neutral ground between our forces. "Say what you came to say."
Up close, Viktor looked nothing like the monster I had built him up to be in my mind. He looked like a man who had lost everything chasing something he could never catch. His eyes, the same gray as storm clouds, held exhaustion and something that almost looked like regret.
"Your mother had your strength," he said quietly, his gaze assessing me. "That fire that cannot be broken, only tempered. I spent decades trying to understand it, to possess it somehow. I corrupted good wolves, destroyed families, and built an army of rogues. All because I believed power like yours could be stolen."
"And now?" I asked, keeping my voice steady despite the confusion swirling through me.
"Now I am tired, Lisa. My obsession cost me my mate, my pack, my honor. I see in you what I saw in your mother, and I finally understand that strength like yours cannot be taken. It can only be given, freely, to those worthy of receiving it." Viktor's shoulders sagged, the weight of his choices visible in every line of his body. "I offer you a truce. I will leave permanently, take my rogues, and never return to pack lands if you spare my life and release Sophia to come with me."
The request took me by surprise. Sophia, his daughter. The woman Ryan had gotten engaged to while I was exiled and broken.
"Why should I trust you?" I demanded, my wolf rising to the surface with silver fire. "You sent Emma back corrupted, used my best friend as a weapon against me. You have given me no reason to believe anything you say."
"You are right not to trust me," Viktor admitted, and the honesty in his voice startled me more than any lie could have. "But I am offering you something you need more than revenge. Peace. An end to this conflict that has poisoned both our lives. I am done fighting, Lisa. I just want to take my daughter and disappear."
I studied his face, searching for deception and finding only exhaustion that mirrored my own. The battle was won. We could kill Viktor and scatter his rogues, cement our victory with his blood. Or we could end this cycle of violence that had started before I was even born.
"I have one condition," I said, my voice carrying Alpha command that made even Viktor straighten. "Emma must be freed from your corruption first. Completely. I mean permanently. You give her back to me whole, and I will let you and Sophia leave."
Viktor reached into his jacket slowly, pulling out a vial of clear liquid that caught the light like liquid diamonds. An antidote.
"Call her forward," he said.
Daniel brought Emma from the containment cell, still weak from fighting Viktor's control, her brown eyes clear but haunted. Viktor approached her carefully, his movements non-threatening, and pressed the vial to her lips.
"Drink," he commanded, but his voice held something almost gentle. "Be free."
Emma drank, and I watched my best friend collapse as Viktor's chemicals left her system in a violent purge that had her convulsing on the ground. I caught her, I felt her heart racing against mine as her body fought to reclaim itself.
When Emma finally stilled, her eyes opened clear and completely her own. She looked at me and started crying, apologies pouring from her lips faster than I could process them.
"Later," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "Rest now. You are safe, you are home sweetheart."
Viktor stepped back, his part of the bargain complete. Sophia emerged from the pack house, her belongings already packed as though she had known this moment was coming. She looked at Ryan once, her expression unreadable, and then walked to her father's side without a word.
"We are done here," Viktor said, his hand settling protectively on Sophia's shoulder. "You have my word, silver wolf. You will never see me again."
They disappeared into the forest, father and daughter finally united but exiled from pack lands forever. The pack watched them go, and when they were truly gone, a cheer erupted that should have filled me with joy and triumph.
But I felt hollow. Numb. The battle was won, the enemy defeated, and my best friend saved. Everything I had fought for was secure.
So why did I feel like I was standing in the ruins of something I could never rebuild?
Ryan approached me, his arms outstretched to embrace his mate and Alpha, victory and relief shining in his eyes. The pack was celebrating around us, warriors embracing and elders offering prayers of gratitude. This should have been our moment. The completion of our bond, the vindication of our love, the happy ending we had both fought so hard to reach.
I stepped back before Ryan could touch me. His arms fell to his sides, confusion replacing relief, and I saw the exact moment he realized something was very wrong between us.
"Lisa?" he said, my name a question and a plea.
The words came from somewhere deep inside me, from a wound that had never properly healed, from the girl who had been sent away broken and alone while the man who claimed to love her stayed silent and safe.
"You stayed silent when the elders sent me away," I said, my voice cold and clear in the sudden quiet that had fallen over the celebrating pack. "You got engaged to Sophia. You only completed our bond because you had to, not because you wanted to. I need time, Ryan. Away from you."
