Chapter 96: Lucien’s POV — The Sacrifice
The light is everywhere. It presses against my skin like a thousand whispered secrets, searing through my bones, singing through my mind in a chorus of every voice I’ve ever loved and lost. The Library’s curse is unspooling, unraveling through me, every shred of what I am tugged loose, torn apart by a power ancient and overwhelming. I should be afraid. And I am—not because I don’t face death, but because of the jagged ache nestled deeper: the ache of leaving her.
Elara.
Her face haunts me, flickering in the corners of my vision even as the bright magic consumes everything. Wide eyes—defiant, raw, unbearably fierce—burning with a blend of despair and stubborn hope that always made me feel small and reckless all at once. I hear her screaming my name, though the roar of ritual drowns out every sound. I want to tell her to stop, to look at me one last time—to remember that I am here, still here. But the words are stolen before they form; swallowed by this brilliant, hungry light that claims all.
I almost laugh. Because that’s so like her. Always fighting. Never yielding—even when surrender seems the only option. Even now, her stubborn courage blazes brighter than any spell I’ve ever wielded. And damn it, I love her for it.
Every cell in me claws to stay. To fight. To pull her close and argue over maps and plans, to steal one more night of warmth beside her, quiet laughter curling in the dark. I want to feel the delicate brush of her hair against my cheek, the sly tilt of her smile when she’s bested me in some trivial way, the weight of her trust pressed into me like the softest promise a man could carry. I want more—always more. I want her.
But this is the only path. I have told myself this a thousand times—that my life is but a single thread woven into a tapestry far greater than I can see. That it is enough to have loved her, to have protected her, even if it costs me everything. And yet the truth, raw and merciless, breaks through: I am terrified. Terrified of the dark, terrified to leave her behind, terrified she might feel the empty space I create and not understand why I must go.
Still… love is sharper than fear. She is the sharpest edge I’ve ever known.
Memories flood in: our first stolen moments, when the Library was still a wisp of shadow and promise, and I dared to touch her hand, nearly losing myself in the spark of her laughter. I remember that wild rain pounding on our backs the chaotic first night outside the wards, when she dragged me into the storm reluctant and triumphant. I hated the wet cold—my boots soaked through, my cloak sodden, hair plastered to my face. Yet she laughed like the world belonged to her, and somehow I wanted to follow her into every storm that would come. That is the Elara I carry with me—the woman who made me human, who made me vulnerable, who made me whole.
I wish I could hold her one last time. Press my lips soft and slow to hers. Let the world fall away as we remember what it means to be alive—more than this sacrifice. More than the weight of prophecy.
But I cannot.
The ritual consumes me—the pulse, the blaze, pulling every fiber of my being apart, threading me into the Library’s dream and nightmare. And yet I feel her. She is as real as breath, as fierce as flame within me. Her warmth, her hope, her stubborn, impossible bravery.
I carry her as I unravel.
I carry her as I become light and memory and magic.
Because it is the only thing I can take with me—the only thing that will remain after the Library devours the rest.
I am not afraid.
Not while I remember her.
Not while I know she will live on—laughing, crying, fighting and rising, shaping every step forward with the love we share.
And still, I would give everything—everything—to hear her voice once more, to feel the steady strength of her hand in mine, to tell her she is—and always has been—everything.
I think of her.
And the fear softens, replaced by a blaze that burns brighter than the wildest ritual.
I think of her laughter and how it steadies me, of her stubborn heart and the way she looked at me when she trusted me with all she was.
I have never been worthy of such fierce, wild love.
But I have been utterly, irrevocably hers.
And that—always—has been enough.
The light takes me.
It tears through me.
But I do not resist.
I let go.
Because this is the only way to keep her safe.
The only way to bend fate with love.
And as I fall—into nothing, into everything—I whisper, the last thing my heart carries.
Elara.
I am yours.
Always.
