Chapter 119
Claire’s POV
As the sun started to rise, I reached the forest boundary at the exact location where Midnight Moon used to stand. Years without care caused the trees to grow wild until they became denser than ever. I moved cautiously through the thick vegetation while my memories returned in alternating waves of bitterness and sweetness. This location served as both my confinement and my battlefield. I lost everything in this place but gained the courage to continue my journey.
Vines and fallen branches partially obscured the ruins from view. Cracked stone walls lay in ruins, resembling the skeletal remains of a once-powerful pack home. My fingers traced the chill of the ancient stones before I shut my eyes. The distant voices seemed to fill the air with packmates' laughter and battle cries, followed by the stillness after defeat. The past lived in the air around me.
Burning tears filled my eyes, yet I refused to look away. The pain I experienced here existed alongside the personal development I gained here. I reflected on the errors I committed in this place and all those moments when I questioned my abilities, along with my longing for another opportunity. My bones vibrated with the sensation of a second chance as I stood here.
I spun around when I heard a soft noise coming from behind me. Derek emerged from the trees showing both seriousness and gentleness on his face. He quietly expressed his belief that I would arrive here.
My throat felt tig,ht but I managed to show a smile as I gave a nod. “I needed to. To say goodbye.”
He approached me near the ruins and surveyed the area while his eyes showed complete comprehension. “This place changed you. Made you who you are now.”
I nearly shattered under the pressure but emerged intact. This memory stands out as what I need to hold onto, but my voice remained calm even though I experienced an internal emotional tempest.
We positioned ourselves on a fallen stone while the silence we shared felt comfortable. As the breeze moved through the trees it brought along forgotten memories that I wasn't prepared to confront. But I knew this was necessary. To move forward I needed to close this chapter for myself and our pack and our future together.
Derek’s hand found mine, warm and steady. “You’ve come so far, Claire. The pack sees it too.”
I squeezed his hand, grateful. “I hope they do. I want them to believe in me. Like I’m learning to believe in myself.”
The ruins were split open by a loud sharp crack. We both looked up, alert. The earth shook under our feet while dust descended from the damaged walls.
“Did you sense anything?” Derek questioned while he stood up abruptly.
I nodded, heart pounding. “Something’s not right.”
A shadowy form suddenly appeared between the trees before we had time to respond. I saw a single wolf that looked unlike any others I had witnessed before. Its eyes glowed with an unnatural radiance while its fur appeared to move like drifting smoke.
At the ruins' boundary, the stranger halted while staring directly at me. “Claire,” it said, voice low but clear. Your past events still influence your present life.
A hard swallow escaped my throat as fear collided with my resolve within me. The ancient stones whispered of past events, but the wolf presented a dangerous warning about an unprepared challenge ahead.
Derek moved between me and the wolf as he let out a low growl. “Who are you?”
The wolf displayed a malicious grin that twisted its lips into a cruel shape. You considered the puzzle finished, but I am its final missing piece. Everything will collapse soon.
The threat gained momentum as the wind started to blow stronger. I stared at Derek with the understanding that we were on the threshold of an upcoming battle that mattered for myself as well as the pack and the future we envisioned.
The Midnight Moon ruins provide potential closure but contain secrets that need discovery.
The sun’s ascent made it clear to me that my journey still had many miles to go.
The unusual wolf's speech lingered densely in the atmosphere. The painful thudding of my heart against my ribs made me attempt to control my breathing. Derek stood protectively beside me so that I felt shielded, yet his presence failed to halt the creeping chill reaching my spine. Who was this wolf? What puzzle was left unfinished? And why now?
“I don’t know who you are or what you want,” I said with deliberate firmness, although my voice quivered. You pose no threat to me or this entire pack.
The stranger's gaze darted back and fort,h showing a blend of amusement mixed with a darker intent. This situation extends beyond your control and even exceeds Redwater's power. Those shadows which you believed to be defeated are merely waiting for the perfect moment to make their comeback.
I looked at Der, who responded by narrowing his eyes and tensing his muscles. “Explain yourself. Now.”
With each deliberate movemen,t the wolf advanced towards ,us the land beneath its paws appeared to grow darker. The Black Fang did not act alone in destroying The Midnight Moon, as an ancient and malevolent power was involved. An ancestral force that is both ancient and cruel connects to your family history.
I felt my breath catch. My bloodline? What could that mean? My parents repeatedly urged me to monitor my ancestral connections, but I never paid attention to their advice. Suddenly, a single thread started to unravel a complex tapestry whose meaning I couldn't grasp.
Derek’s voice was low but sharp. “You’re walking on thin ice. You can't show up here to intimidate us.
The wolf's laugh produced an unsettling noise that was far from comforting. “Threat? No. I’m here to warn you. The destructive force which annihilated Midnight Moon has returned with increased strength and danger. The upcoming challenges will require you to demonstrate leadership at levels you have never encountered before.
A sudden crack echoed nearby. As the earth trembled once more, loose stones raced over the remains of the old structure. The wolf’s eyes gleamed brighter. “This land remembers. And soon, so will you.”
The wolf turned to leave and vanished into the trees before we could take action, his departure marked by only a whisper on the wind. I stood frozen, mind racing. Derek’s hand found mine, tight and steady.
“We need to prepare,” he said. “This is just the beginning.”
I nodded, swallowing hard. Our past returned to challenge us but I was determined to confront it directly this time. Our battle was for the pack's survival along with Derek's and the future we were determined to create.
The remnants of the past stood before us as more than just memories. They were a warning.
I sensed that our toughest challenges awaited us in the future.
