Chapter 102: Lasting Peace
Chapter 102: Lasting Peace
Claire POV
Thick as smoke and brimming with icy energy, the black mist hung over the battlefield. Slowly, it twisted into shapes too bizarre to explain, circling above the trees. Now, with their eyes wide with fear, the wolves that had just bowed in loyalty retreated. The air itself felt heavier. Even though the blood was still warm on the ground, I could still feel the cold in my bones.
Derek took a step towards me, his hand grazing mine as though to remind me that I was still present and alive. His body was still hurting from the fight, but his face was calm and pale. Astrid's silver eyes stared at the mist as she stood next to her fallen warriors. She remained silent. She remained motionless. She just observed.
"What is that?" I muttered.
Derek spoke softly. Something old. Something that predates all of us.
Once more, the mist shifted. This time, it began to rise higher into the air, then slowly faded into the clouds. It left a deafening silence. The entire forest seemed to hold its breath.
Jared emerged from the shadows, his arms scratched and face bruised. He had been fighting with the outlaws, attempting to keep the ones who gave up safe. He approached us and stopped in front of me, nodding to Astrid.
"I also saw it," he remarked. "That thing. It’s not just some dark spirit. It serves as a warning.
I squinted. “From who?”
Jared glanced around, seemingly hesitant to speak. "From whatever is on the other side of the curtain." The oldest packs were afraid of them. The ones that fed on blood and chaos long before the first Luna rose.”
I swallowed hard. "So... this tranquillity-it will not endure?"
Derek put his hand in mine and said, "It can." "If we succeed."
Three days passed.
Redwater Valley slowly returned to its quiet rhythm. The wounded were treated, and the dead were buried with honour. Wolves from all sides worked together to rebuild. The young, the old, even the rogues who had once served Fenric—all joined to heal the scars left by war.
Astrid kept her word. She took her father’s loyal wolves and left the valley. But before she did, she met with me in the Council Hall. Not a guard. No armaments.
She remarked, "I still disagree with your ways." But that night, I noticed something in my father that I had never noticed before. Mercy.”
I gave a nod. “It’s not weakness. It is power in a different form.
She smiled slightly at me. "You must teach others that if peace is to endure."
I extended my hand. She gave it a shake. Do not lie. No gimmicks. Just a silent agreement between two violently raised daughters.
The real work started after she left.
The Lunar Council convened under the stars during the subsequent full moon. Not in lofty towers or secret rooms. But out in the open, visible to the wolves. Alpha Jordan from Riverfang, Alpha Maren from the Northern Cliffs, and Beta Lucas from the Eastern Range all stood before the crowd.
Derek was by my side as my partner as well as an Alpha. Jared was standing close to us as well. The very wolves who had once betrayed him have now forgiven him after he was exiled. The wolves gradually started to notice the change in him, though it took some time. He would always be burdened by his past, but he would also be redeemed.
"We need to come together," I stated in a clear and steady voice. "Not only for today, but also for the days ahead. We fought side by side. We bled together. Now we must rise together.”
There were murmurs of agreement. Nods. Smiles of exhaustion. I hope.
Maren moved forward. “Then let us sign a new pact. One that binds us not by blood or fear, but by trust.”
And we did.
The Pact of the Moon, written by all present leaders, was signed by claw and blood, sealed with the blessings of the Elders and the bond of our wolves. It was more than tradition. It was a promise.
For harmony.
For harmony.
To survive.
Redwater thrived.
In the woods, pups ran around unrestrained. Between packs, farmers engaged in open trade. Once-secret knowledge was shared by healers. Even the old warriors, who had once been constrained by pride and rivalry, sat together in the taverns and talked about their memories, some of which were warm and some of which were painful.
I walked the paths that led to the river in the mornings while I was at the valley's edge. Derek frequently accompanied me. During those walks, we did not talk much. We did not have to. I felt at ease just being with him.
He was standing close to the ancient oak where we shared our first kiss one morning.
He remarked, "I have been thinking."
"Roughly?"
"What comes next?"
I cocked my head. "I believed this to be it."
He grinned. "No, Claire. This is just the start.
He reached into his coat and pulled out a small wooden box. My heart skipped. I knew what it was before he opened it. Inside was a ring made of polished stone and moon-silver. Easy and powerful. Similar to him.
"Will you rule with me, Claire—not just as Luna, but as my lifelong mate?" he asked.
I refrained from crying. I did not pass out. The only thing that mattered was what I said.
"Yes."
The ceremony's preparations started immediately.
A holy bonding under the new moon, not just a wedding. Every pack was invited. Even humans from nearby towns were welcomed as guests. Peace had broken down walls that once divided us.
On the eve of the ceremony, I stood alone at the Moonfire Temple, the oldest part of Redwater. I thought of my journey. From a cast-out omega to the Luna of united packs. I reflected on the people I had lost. My folks. Companions. Even adversaries who had imparted harsh realities to me.
I also considered the future.
I heard a faint rustle behind me at that moment.
Anticipating Derek, I turned.
However, it was not him.
The woman was dressed in white robes. She had a hood over her face. There was a faint glow of light on her hands.
She remarked, "You did well."
"Who are you?" I asked out of curiosity rather than fear.
"A messenger," she answered. "From the Veil."
I blinked. "The Veil?"
"The shadow you felt... the mist you saw." It was not a warning. It served as a test.
"A test?" I said it again.
She nodded. "And you made it through. However, that does not imply that it is finished.
I took a step forward. "What do you mean?"
She pulled her hood down. Her face was old. Not with age, but with time. Like she had lived more lives than any being should. Her eyes glowed like the moon.
“The peace you hold now—it will last. But only if you’re ready for what sleeps beyond the mountains.”
My blood turned cold. “Another war?”
She smiled gently. “Not yet. But beware, Luna Claire. You are more than just Redwater's leader now. The key is you.
"What is the key to?"
"To the next era."
She vanished into the mist before I could ask her any more questions.
Lost.
As simple as that.
Once more, I stood by myself.
However, everything seemed different.
Because even though peace had arrived...
