Chapter 139: 139 The medical ward
Hearing Jacob's final remarks as Kamara neared the room, she had entered uninvited and couldn't conceal her emotions. Tears were already welling up in her eyes, and she was nervous about the terrible images that kept replaying in her head, making her assume the worst.
At another time, Kamara would have found it strange to hear Caiden's arid, icy voice say, "You can't just barge into my room without being summoned," but right then, all Kamara could think about was Nate.
She approached him, took Sterling, and said, "I don't give a damn about your rules, Caiden." Then she moved away. "Go ahead and punish me if you like, but tell me where Nate is."
Caiden stared at her, wondering if he should bring up these topics with Sterling present.
Anxiously he remarked, "Nate went to the human city for an investigation and hasn't returned yet; but Ed is the one who's in danger, not Nate."
Angrily, she exclaimed, "I would be happy if someone told me that monster Ed no longer exists, but I heard Jacob say that Ed mentioned Nate's name."
"That holds no significance." Even though Kamara might be correct, he disregarded her worries and walked by her to the door of the room. "I have to find out what happened to Ed; save your paranoia for later."
She said, "I'm going with you," which confused him.
Placing Sterling down, Kamara instructed him to go to his brothers and be with Lisa till she came back. The boy took off, but not before giving Caiden one final look to make sure he knew exactly what was going on. It wasn't until Sterling vanished that Caiden said,
"You find Ed intolerable. What makes you desire to see him?"
She signaled to Caiden, "I don't want to see him," and nothing would make her change her mind. "I'd like to know what became of Nate."
Even if it meant breaking Caiden's ban, Kamara was determined to find the truth since she was certain that something had happened to Nate. He simply met her eyes and quietly walked away with the deputy in tow.
Jacob spoke tensely and continued, "He's in the medical ward, sir. In a few minutes, I'll meet you there."
After saying so, he turned to leave Caiden alone with Kamara. Caiden didn't appear to want to speak with her, though. He entered the vehicle and was taken aback by how swiftly she did the same, seating next to him.
"Kamara, what do you think you're doing?" Even though he already knew the answer, he watched her closely.
Caiden was even more perplexed when she replied, "I am aware that Nate went to the human city to investigate the kidnapping of the kids. And I am aware that by now he ought to have made his way back. Ed is aware of Nate's fate."
"That's not possible," he said, his gaze shifting to the road. He cranked the engine and took off. "I told Ed to keep an eye out for intruders and scout the woodland close to the pack. In what way is Nate's mission connected to that?"
"I'm not sure," she answered. "Your composure in the wake of your best friend's disappearance astounds me."
He spoke without meeting her gaze, but there was a hint of sadness in his voice as he continued, "I've come to accept the fact that when you look at me, you see a monster. Nate is fine, I know that."
Kamara thought Caiden's answer was a little hesitant. All he was doing was attempting to get her to relax. Kamara felt that she still needed to make things clear with Caiden when he parked the car in front of the medical facility. In a hurry, she exited the vehicle to follow him. Caiden stopped abruptly when she grabbed his arm, and he seemed to be focusing just on her.
They looked at one other, and she responded, "You're wrong. Caiden, I don't think you're a monster. That is not how I would ever feel about my children's father."
Any exquisite moment that might have existed between them was broken by the screaming coming from within the hospital center. Barren barricades were vanquished as Caiden and Kamara dashed inside. Ed's eyes were wide and red, and his dried blood covered him; his irrepressible excitement suggested that he had witnessed death up close.
"Nate, Nate." He didn't stop repeating, and Caiden started to worry about Nate.
"Ed, what has happened to you?" Caiden didn't feel like asking about Nate.
At that moment, Ed, in a fit of irrational desperation, grabbed the Alpha's shirt and pulled him in.
Caiden shuddered at his words, "Nate was there, Alpha. When I saved him, Enzo was about to kill him."
In order to avoid falling, Kamara had to lean against the wall.
"Nate was where?" Ed released him, and there was nothing positive about the expression on his face.
Still furious and gasping for air, he added, "He fled, but he was injured, and Enzo followed him with his army."
Caiden could not find words.
"Sir, Enzo wants to destroy Nate."
However, Kamara took offense. She looked at Ed as she cautiously proceeded toward the door, her terrified eyes wide. She ran as soon as she could feel the sun on her face. She knew where Enzo was. He mentioned that Enzo was hiding in the old house where her parents had been slaughtered in a conversation she had overheard concerning Caiden. Furthermore, she didn't give a damn about Enzo's intentions at that particular moment, and she was going to face him head-on despite the fact that her life was in danger as well.
As soon as she saw him in front of the home, she went up and gave him a vicious neck-punch. She was not as strong as Enzo, though. With one hand, he forced Kamara to the ground and climbed on top of her.
"You worthless orphan, I yearned for this day with you."
Beyond that, though, he dared not touch her. Enzo was interested in hearing Kamara's perspective. "Where is nate?" Enzo was taken aback. "You damn bastard, what have you done to him?"
"I would have got rid of Nate a long time ago if I had known that was why you were here."
Tears filled Kamara's eyes. Nate couldn't be dead, and Enzo couldn't be telling the truth. It seemed as though his words rendered her absolutely immobile. Kamara was breathing heavily.
"You must be joking." Her voice trembled as she said. "You don't have a reason to murder Nate."
"Well, I do," he admitted. "But since you're the next to pass away, you'll never get to know it."
However, Enzo was pushed violently away from her. With her eyes closed, Kamara didn't know what was going on; she just knew that voice.
Louis was standing in front of her when she glanced with difficulty and said, "Don't you dare touch her again, Enzo."
"Or what?" he made fun of Louis. "How about if we were to tell Kamara the whole truth? It's probably time for her to learn the true you."
