Chapter 165: The Last Thread

Dawn’s POV

The chamber was colder than the deepest winter night. Shadows pressed in from every side, sliding across the stone floor like living smoke. The broken cage of silver light around the twins pulsed weakly, its glow flickering with each of my breaths. I could taste metal on my tongue, the air thick with fear and dark magic.

I closed my eyes and reached inward.

Not just to my heart. Deeper—past the thrum of blood and the ache in my bones. I sought the river of power that lived beneath everything, the part of me born as a Luna. When I touched it, it was like stepping into a flood of silver fire. Hot and cold at the same time. Endless.

The river welcomed me, but it also warned me.

This will cost everything.

I didn’t care.

The twins’ small voices echoed in my memory. Ryker’s giggle. Rayna’s sleepy humming when she was about to nap. That was worth any price.

I pulled harder on the river.

The shadow cage trembled. Cracks of pale light ran through the black bars. Umbra screamed, a sound like tearing metal and shattered glass.

“You dare!” the voice thundered from the darkness. “You would give up eternity for fleeting blood?”

I forced my eyes open. The wraith’s outline rippled like black fire. I felt no fear now, only truth.

“Yes,” I whispered. My own voice surprised me—it was steady, calm. “Because love is the only eternal thing.”

The silver fire burned brighter, racing along my veins. It was beautiful and terrifying. My body began to shake. Each heartbeat grew slower, heavier, as if the river pulled the life right out of me. But my will held.

Through the bond, Raven’s voice thundered like a heartbeat. I’m here. Don’t let go of me.

I reached for him with my mind, with whatever was left of me. Hold the twins, I answered. They are yours now.

The cage shrieked as if alive. A deep black knot at its base split open with a violent crack. Light burst outward in a roar, silver and pure. The wraith howled, claws flailing, and dissolved into smoke. The chamber shook like the world itself was breaking.

My knees gave out. The Luna fire inside me guttered, its glow fading into soft sparks. I swayed, weightless.

Strong arms caught me before I hit the cold stone. Raven’s scent—pine and storm air—filled my lungs. “Stay with me,” he begged, his voice rough with fear.

I tried to smile though I could barely move my lips. “I’m here,” I whispered. “Just… smaller.”

The twins gasped. Two sharp, perfect breaths. The sound cut through the fading roar. I turned my head just enough to see their little eyes flutter open—bright and alive. Kel and Vanessa rushed forward, lifting them free from the broken cage. Their joy wrapped the room like sunlight.

Relief poured through me, but I could not hold on to it. My vision blurred.

Nikki staggered back from the collapsing shadows. Her once-beautiful form flickered, half human, half smoke. Rage twisted her features. “This isn’t the end,” she hissed. “Umbra waits. You will all kneel.”

A crack of black light swallowed her whole. Then she was gone, leaving only the smell of burnt air.

The silence that followed was heavy. My body trembled in Raven’s arms. He lowered us both to the floor, cradling me against his chest.

“Dawn,” he whispered, forehead pressed to mine. “Look at me. Please.”

I forced my eyes open. His golden irises glowed in the dim light, fierce and full of pain. “The twins…” I breathed.

“They’re safe,” he said quickly. “You saved them. You saved us all.”

I wanted to answer but the world tilted. My own heartbeat felt distant, as if it belonged to someone else. I let my head rest against him and listened to the steady drum of his heart. That sound pulled me back from the edge.

Kel knelt beside us, one hand glowing faint green as she checked my pulse. “She’s weak, but alive,” she said, relief softening her voice.

Vanessa brought the twins closer. Ryker reached a tiny hand toward me, his eyes wide. “Mama?” he whispered.

My chest ached at the word. I lifted my trembling fingers to touch his cheek. “I’m here, baby.”

Rayna’s small hand joined his. Warmth spread through me—soft, human warmth, not the wild blaze of Luna power. It was enough.

Raven brushed damp hair from my forehead. “You gave too much,” he said quietly, a hint of anger under the fear. “Don’t ever do that again.”

I tried to laugh but it came out a faint breath. “Would you have done less?”

He closed his eyes, jaw tight. “Never. But watching you fade…” His voice broke. “I can’t lose you.”

I reached up, my palm barely making it to his cheek. “You won’t.”

The chamber around us began to settle. The silver cracks dimmed to a gentle glow. Pieces of the shattered cage melted into mist, leaving smooth stone behind. The air smelled cleaner, like rain after a storm.

Cole and Elder Thorne approached, their faces lined with exhaustion. “The shadow realm is breaking apart,” Elder Thorne said. “We must leave before it collapses.”

Raven gathered me carefully in his arms and stood. My body felt light, almost hollow, but I trusted him to hold me. Behind us, Kel and Vanessa carried the twins, who clung to each other, eyes round and silent.

As we walked, I watched the walls of the chamber shift and fade. The darkness that had felt endless now cracked with streaks of dawn-colored light. It was as if the world itself was exhaling.

“Dawn,” Raven murmured as we moved. “What you did… I don’t have words.”

“You don’t need them,” I whispered. My throat was dry, every word a small effort. “We are a pack. We protect each other.”

He pressed a soft kiss to my forehead. “Always.”

The path ahead brightened until we stepped into a tunnel of soft silver. I rested my head on his shoulder, breathing in the scent of earth and pine, and let the gentle rhythm of his heartbeat guide me forward.
