Chapter 13: The Awakening Ritual
The mountain cave, guarded by peaks and clouds, echoed with the sound of dripping water and the soft chanting of Dixon and Aethon as they prepared for Izzy's awakening ritual. Ancient petroglyphs adorned the walls, bearing witness to the land's secrets. Aethon, with burning eyes, insisted they leave the forest.
Izzy lay inert on the crimson talisman mat, her pale skin absorbing the glow of luminescent fungi. The mat's spells, 'Whispers of the Ancients' and 'Echoes of Eternity', pulsed blue.
Suddenly, her chest rose and fell with imperceptible slowness, a faint breath whispering life into her frozen body.
Dixon's eyes widened, and his gaze instantly darted between Izzy and Aethon. He rushed to kneel beside her, his arms stretched out to touch her, but with an almost non-existent gap between his hand and her body, he froze.
He sprang to his feet, hurrying to Aethon and grabbed his dress. “Did you see that?!” He asked. “She moved just now. Her chest…”
“Her soul just descended back to her body…” Aethon explained. “Out of the three stages, her soul is expected to pass, it passed through just two because those I sent hate it over there. They were in a hurry to get back here, but a win is still a win, right?”
Dixon joggled his head, agreeing with Aethon, but another thought found its way into his mind, and he didn't hesitate to say it. “Won't there be any repercussions for that?”
Aethon shrugged. “Not that I know of…” His response was immediate. “The future holds a lot, but for now, let’s face the present and tackle the one that has already…”
His voice trailed. He loosened his arms from behind, stepping forward towards Izzy. “The ritual will begin once my messenger returns with the water.”
Dixon’s face furrowed. “Water?” He uttered, his tone questioning.
“Water from the ocean's darkest depths, where sunlight never touches, yet warmth lingers,” Aethon explained, his words hanging in the air. A soft breeze swept in, and he smiled, stretching out his hands. An unseen spirit placed a calabash in his palm, and he murmured, “Thanks.”
As the spirit departed, a heavier gust blew
Dixon caught sight of the calabash in Aethon's hand. “The water?”
Aethon nodded swiftly. “Yes... The ritual begins now.”
Dixon's eyes widened slightly as Aethon handed him a delicate, white garment. A celestial energy filled the space, and Dixon knew, without asking, that Aethon collected the sacred attire through unseen forces.
He took the garment and stepped outside, the cold mountain air swirling around him as he changed. When he returned, his eyes were transformed, radiating a newfound serenity.
Aethon donned a similar garment, his movements fluid.
They settled into a cross-legged position, facing each other with Izzy's still form between them. The air grew still, as if the rocks held their breath.
Aethon's eyes locked onto Dixon's. “Are you certain, My Lord?” He asked, his voice low. “I can call upon a spirit to guide Izzy's journey. It is not too late to change your mind.”
Dixon’s gaze was steady, his jaw set in determination. “I’m with you, Aethon. I’ve come this far together. Besides, I’m her mate; it’s only fair I walk her through it.”
Aethon’s eyes searched Dixon’s face for a moment longer, then nodded almost imperceptibly. “Are you ready?” He asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Dixon gave a small, sharp nod, his eyes already beginning to drift closed.
Aethon’s eyelids followed, and in the silence that followed, their bodies seemed to sink deeper into the earth, their postures assuming an almost statuesque stillness.
Aethon’s lips began to move, whispering ancient words of power, the sounds rising and falling in a hypnotic cadence. The air vibrated with the force of the incantation, the cave itself seeming to lean in, listening intently as Aethon wove the spell that’d awaken Izzy’s slumbering soul.
“Ξύπνα, κοιμισμένη ψυχή, στο κατώφλι του φωτός, αναγεννημένη, ακίνητη καρδιά, στη φωτιά της ζωής, ανοιχτή, κλειστή πόρτα, στο κάλεσμα του πεπρωμένου, σπάσε τις αλυσίδες του ύπνου και ελευθέρωσε το πνεύμα σου. Ξύπνα, Ίζι, και γύρνα σε εμάς, με την ψυχή σου φλεγόμενη…”
As Aethon spoke, he reached out and gently took Izzy’s hand, his fingers wrapping around hers in a gentle yet firm grasp. Dixon, sensing the energy building, reached out and placed his hand on Izzy’s other hand, creating a bridge between them.
Aethon’s incantation reached its crescendo, and above them, a glowing triangular thread ignited, its luminescent filaments shimmering with an ethereal light. The thread hovered, pulsing with energy, channelling the mystical forces Aethon had invoked.
The space pulsed with mystical energy, the cave itself leaning in, listening intently as Aethon’s words wove a tapestry of magic. The glowing thread concentrated the energy, focusing it onto Izzy's still form, as if weaving a bridge between the worlds, a pathway for the slumbering soul to awaken.
“Είθε η φλόγα της συνείδησης να σε καθοδηγεί και να σε οδηγεί στην ελευθερία. Είθε ο άνεμος της ζωής να σε ωθεί και να σε μεταφέρει στο φως. Ξύπνα, Ίζι, και βρες τον δρόμο σου, στο μονοπάτι της αλήθειας…”
Dixon’s chest heaved as the Nekrothyma burst, the vial erupting from his sternum in a gush of blood. He clenched his jaw, his vein bulging with pain, his face twisted in agony.
Aethon’s eyelids remained sealed, his features taut with tension.
The air vibrated with the power of Nekrothyma. The sound of Dixon’s laboured breathing filled the cave, punctuated by the faint, metallic scent of his blood, as the weight of the vial grew heavier, bearing down on Dixon like a tombstone.
Dixon’s anguish finally broke through his clenched jaw. A trickle of blood seeped from his ear, and a thin stream dripped from his nose. His scream was silenced by his clenched teeth, his hands clawing at his chest as if to rip out the searing pain.
He crashed to the cave floor, his body convulsing in a brutal spasm, blood gushing from his ear and nose, painting the stone beneath him crimson. His eyes, wild with agony, locked onto Izzy’s motionless form, and a fierce determination etched his face.
His voice, barely audible, spoke words of defiant love. “Even if I don’t open my eyes again... I die with no regret... hoping you’ll live happily from now on. Izzy, make every moment count... and worth it."
His gaze held hers, a burning promise, as his eyelids finally surrendered to the darkness, his whisper fading into the silence; his testament to the love that might outlast his mortality.
