Chapter 64 Sorry
The evidence against Elder Michael was circumstantial but damning—shell companies, financial transfers, communication patterns matching the Architect's timeline.
"We need more before confronting him," Kai said.
"We need to act before he realizes we know," Elara countered.
They compromised—gather more evidence while monitoring Michael's movements.
Reese installed surveillance on Michael's home and office, discovering meetings with people connected to mining interests.
"He's definitely involved," Reese confirmed. "But we still can't prove he's the Architect."
"Then we force his hand," Elara said. "Make him expose himself."
"How?" Kai asked.
"By threatening what he wants," Elara said. "We announce I'm donating mining rights to environmental conservation, making extraction impossible."
"That would ruin years of his planning," Kai said.
"Exactly," Elara said. "And desperate people make mistakes."
They held a press conference announcing Elara's decision to place northern forest territories in permanent conservation trust.
"These lands belonged to my family for generations," Elara declared. "And I'm ensuring they remain protected for generations to come."
Mining stocks dropped and within hours Elara received furious calls from multiple corporations.
Including one from Elder Michael.
"What have you done?" he demanded. "Do you know how much money you just cost this pack?"
"I'm protecting my family's legacy," Elara said calmly.
"You're destroying it," Michael said. "Those mining rights were our future."
"Our future or your future?" Elara asked.
Silence, then Michael hung up.
That night, three men broke into the estate targeting Adrian's room.
Security stopped them, but the message was clear—Michael was escalating.
"We have him," Kai said after reviewing security footage. "The intruders' communications link directly to Michael's phone."
They brought evidence to pack council the next morning.
"Elder Michael," Kai addressed the assembly. "You're accused of conspiracy to murder, fraud, and treason against pack interests."
"This is outrageous," Michael protested. "I've served this pack for forty years."
"And plotted against pack members for five," Elara said, presenting financial evidence.
The council reviewed documents in silence before Elder Thomas spoke.
"The evidence is substantial," he said. "Elder Michael, what's your defense?"
"Those are forgeries," Michael said. "She's framing me because I opposed her rise to power."
"Then explain the communications to last night's intruders," Kai said, playing audio recordings.
Michael's voice clearly ordering the attack on Adrian.
"You wanted my son dead," Elara said coldly. "For money."
"I wanted obstacles removed," Michael said, his composure cracking. "You and that brat are ruining decades of careful planning."
"Planning to monopolize rare earth extraction," Kai said.
"Planning to make this pack wealthy beyond imagination," Michael corrected. "But you were too stupid to see it."
"We saw murder and conspiracy," Elara said.
"I saw opportunity," Michael said. "Darius understood, we were building something magnificent."
"You were building on corpses," Kai said.
Council voted unanimously to exile Michael and hand him to federal authorities.
"You've won nothing," Michael said as guards restrained him. "The Architect will continue without me."
"You are the Architect," Elara said.
"I'm a participant," Michael corrected with a cold smile. "The real Architect is someone you'll never suspect."
He was dragged away before explaining further.
"What did he mean?" Kai asked.
"He's lying," Elara said. "Trying to create doubt."
But doubt lingered.
Federal investigation of Michael's network revealed connections to dozens of people across multiple states, but no clear leader beyond Michael himself.
"Either he was the top or he protected whoever is," the federal agent said.
"Which means we might not be done," Elara said.
"We never really are," Kai said. "But we're safer than before."
With Michael gone, pack politics shifted dramatically.
Elara announced she'd reversed the conservation trust decision and would proceed with mining as planned.
"It was bait to expose Michael," she explained to the council. "The mining agreement stands."
"Risky gambit," Elder Thomas said.
"Successful gambit," Elara corrected.
As winter approached, life settled into new normal—Adrian thriving in school, mining operations on schedule, security robust but not overwhelming.
Elara and Kai's relationship deepened slowly, carefully, with trust rebuilding brick by brick.
"I think I'm ready," Elara told him one December evening.
"Ready for what?" Kai asked.
"To try," Elara said. "Really try, not just co-parenting but actual relationship."
"You're sure?" Kai asked.
"No," Elara admitted. "But I want to try anyway."
Kai smiled and took her hand. "Then we'll try together."
It wasn't perfect and wouldn't be easy, but it was a beginning.
And after everything they'd survived, beginnings felt like victory.
