Chapter 15 Chapter 15
Ava's POV
The first attack came just before dawn. I stood on the pack house balcony, watching as hundreds of Silvercrest wolves charged across our territory. Our warriors met them head-on, the clash of bodies echoing across the field.
"Luna, you should be inside," Beta James urged.
"A Luna doesn't hide while her pack fights," I replied, already pulling off my jacket.
Marcus grabbed my arm. "Ava, you're still recovering from the trial."
"I'm strong enough." I touched his face. "Trust me."
He studied me for a long moment, then nodded. "We fight together."
"Always."
We shifted simultaneously, our wolves touching briefly before racing toward the battle. My Lycan form still felt new, powerful in ways I was discovering. Every sense was heightened, every movement more fluid than before.
The battlefield was chaos. Blood and fur everywhere, wolves locked in deadly combat. I could feel our pack through the bonds I now shared, their fear and determination mixing into a desperate need to protect our home.
A massive gray wolf lunged at me. Silvercrest's Beta. I dodged, using my superior speed to rake my claws across his flank. He howled, spinning to attack again, but Marcus was there, his black form intercepting the strike.
We fought as one, covering each other's weaknesses, amplifying each other's strengths. Through our bond, we didn't need words. I knew when he would strike, he knew when I would dodge. It was a deadly dance, and we led it perfectly.
But we were still outnumbered.
"Luna!" Rachel's voice cut through the noise. She was in human form, pointing toward the eastern ridge. "Look!"
More wolves were coming. But these weren't Silvercrest. I recognized the markings of three different packs, all ones from Nathan's list of targets.
"They came," I breathed, shifting back to human form momentarily. "The other packs came."
The tide of battle shifted as fresh warriors joined our side. But Silvercrest's Alpha, a massive brown wolf named Dimitri, wasn't retreating. He was heading straight for me.
Marcus tried to intercept, but three Silvercrest wolves blocked him. I faced Dimitri alone.
"Little princess," he growled, the words clear despite his wolf form. "You should have stayed hidden."
"And you should have stayed away from my pack."
We collided with the force of two freight trains. He was larger, stronger, but I was faster. We rolled across the ground, teeth and claws seeking purchase. He got his jaws around my shoulder, and I howled in pain.
Through the bond, I felt Marcus's fury and fear. But he was still fighting his own battles, unable to reach me.
Dimitri threw me against a tree, and I felt ribs crack. "Your mother died as easily as you will."
Rage exploded through me. Power I didn't know I possessed surged forward. My form shimmered, growing larger. The partial shift into my royal Lycan form happened without conscious thought.
"You killed her?" I snarled, advancing on him.
"On Elder Thorne's orders. Just like I'll kill you."
"No," I said, my voice carrying a command that made every wolf in hearing range pause. "You won't."
I lunged, moving faster than any wolf should be able to move. My jaws found his throat before he could react. But instead of killing him, I held him there, using the same move I'd used on Nathan.
"Submit," I commanded, power radiating through every word.
He struggled, but I was no longer just a new Lycan. I was fury incarnate, powered by justice and love and the need to protect my pack.
"Submit!"
His form shuddered, then went limp. But as he submitted, something unexpected happened. Information flooded my mind through the forced connection. I saw everything. Elder Thorne ordering my mother's death. The systematic elimination of Lycan bloodlines. And worse, a plan to attack multiple packs simultaneously, starting today.
I released him, shifting back to human form. "Stop!" I commanded, my voice carrying across the battlefield. "Everyone stop!"
The authority in my voice, powered by royal Lycan blood, made every wolf freeze.
"Silvercrest wolves," I announced, my voice carrying to every corner of the battlefield. "Your Alpha has submitted to me. By pack law, you now answer to Moonvalley. But more importantly, you've been lied to."
I saw confusion in their eyes as they shifted back to human form.
"Elder Thorne has been using you. Using all of us. He ordered the death of my mother, the last Lycan queen. He's orchestrated the deaths of dozens of Lycans over the decades. And right now, while you fight here, he's coordinating attacks on three other packs."
"You're lying," one Silvercrest wolf called out.
"I'm not. When your Alpha submitted, I saw his memories. Every order, every death, every lie." I looked at Dimitri, who was now in human form, looking defeated. "Tell them."
"It's true," he said quietly. "All of it. Thorne promised us power, territory, wealth. But we were just tools for his ambition."
The fighting had completely stopped now, wolves from all packs listening.
"Where is Thorne now?" Marcus asked, joining me in human form.
"Gone," Dimitri said. "He left last night, said he had business elsewhere."
"He's running," Rachel said, approaching with a tablet. "But I've already sent everything from Nathan's safe to every pack council on the continent. They know what he's done."
Elder Selene appeared then, along with several other Elders I didn't recognize. "The High Council has convened," she announced. "Elder Thorne and his co-conspirators will be hunted down and brought to justice."
"And Silvercrest?" I asked.
"Silvercrest will need new leadership," Selene said, looking at me meaningfully. "As the victor in this battle and the one who received their Alpha's submission, that decision falls to you."
I looked at the assembled Silvercrest wolves. They looked lost, leaderless, betrayed by those they trusted. I knew that feeling.
"Silvercrest will maintain its autonomy," I announced. "But they will sign a treaty with Moonvalley. Mutual protection, shared resources, no more secrets."
"And their Alpha?" Selene asked.
I looked at Dimitri. Through the brief connection during his submission, I'd seen more than just Thorne's orders. I'd seen a man manipulated and threatened, trying to protect his pack the only way he knew how.
"Dimitri will step down as Alpha. But he'll serve as ambassador between our packs, working to heal the damage that's been done."
"That's... unprecedented," Selene said.
"Everything about this situation is unprecedented," I replied. "It's time for new solutions."
Marcus took my hand, pride flooding through our bond. "The Luna has spoken. Does anyone challenge her decision?"
Silence met his words. Then, one by one, the wolves began to howl. Not in challenge, but in acceptance. Silvercrest wolves, Moonvalley wolves, and our allies all raising their voices together.
"Luna Ava," Elder Selene said formally. "The High Council recognizes your authority and your wisdom. You've prevented a war and exposed a conspiracy. You truly are your mother's daughter."
As the sun fully rose, bathing the battlefield in golden light, I felt the weight of what we'd accomplished. The revenge that had brought Marcus and me together had led to something neither of us expected: real change.
"So," Marcus murmured in my ear, "ready to plan that second wedding now?"
I laughed, exhausted but happy. "First, we help the wounded. Then we secure the peace. Then maybe we can talk about flowers and wedding cakes."
"I love you," he said simply.
"I love you too," I replied, leaning into his warmth. "Even if our romance is anything but simple."
A throat cleared behind us. Nathan stood there, flanked by guards but unchained.
"The information I provided helped stop this," he said quietly. "I know it doesn't make up for what I've done, but I want to help make things right."
I studied him, seeing not the arrogant twin who'd threatened everything I loved, but a broken man trying to find redemption.
"You'll serve the combined packs," I decided. "Use your business knowledge to help rebuild what was destroyed. Under supervision."
"Thank you," he said, and for the first time, seemed to mean it.
As the packs began to work together, tending wounded and clearing the battlefield, I realized this was just the beginning. We had exposed the conspiracy, but healing the damage would take time.
But with Marcus by my side and our combined packs working together, I knew we could face whatever came next.
