Chapter 39: By His Side, There Is Only Amelia
There was an emotion in his heart that he couldn't control.
Something was gradually spiraling out of control.
He just didn't know it yet.
Finally, William opened his eyes. At this moment, his eyes were calm and still.
Her tricks couldn't fool him.
She had been by his side for seven years. He knew her personality well.
She couldn't leave him.
William drove all the way back to the Brown Group and handled company affairs as usual.
It seemed like nothing had happened, yet something felt different.
An email notification appeared.
William clicked it open and found it was an invitation to a charity gala.
The time was 7 PM tomorrow evening.
It said they hoped he could attend, and he could bring a female companion.
William's phone vibrated once.
It was a text from Isabella.
[William, I heard the Adams Group is hosting a charity gala. I want to do my small part for those patients, but I don't have access. Do you have an entry pass? Can you take me?]
He rarely attended these charity galas.
In the past seven years, he had only attended three times.
For events like this, people usually brought either a work secretary, a professional companion, or a girlfriend, wife, or family member.
Given William's personality, whenever he attended, the person he would bring to such occasions would definitely be Amelia.
Over these seven years, at all these events, the only person by his side had been Amelia.
Currently, he and Amelia hadn't ended their cooling-off period. William had wanted to refuse Isabella, but...
Inexplicably, the image appeared in his mind again—at Evergreen Hospital, Amelia and Dash embracing behind the frosted glass door of the hospital room.
His lips pressed together slightly as a strange emotion washed over him.
Then he replied to Isabella—
[Sure.]
...
Time slowly passed.
On the other side, at Evergreen Hospital.
Amelia was discussing the next show's content with Cecil.
Her phone vibrated. A new message came in.
She glanced at it—a charity gala invitation.
Then the hospital room door was pushed open.
Jeffrey rushed in.
"What's wrong?" Amelia asked, puzzled.
Cecil, hearing that Amelia had something to deal with, went to handle other matters first.
Ending the video conference, Amelia looked at Jeffrey.
Jeffrey sat down and said, "Your health..."
He hesitated, looking very conflicted.
"I'll go." Before Jeffrey could struggle to get the words out, Amelia had already spoken.
"What?" Jeffrey was clearly confused. "You know what I was going to say?"
Amelia handed her phone to Jeffrey.
On "Lika's" card, the charity gala invitation was already open.
Tomorrow evening at 7 PM, invited in the name of the Adams Group.
The fact that this message reached "Lika's" phone meant Jeffrey hadn't told his family.
She had to secure "Voice of Heaven," and the charity gala invitation had already reached her. She had to go.
Jeffrey hesitated and said, "Well, things are a bit complicated."
Amelia looked at Jeffrey questioningly.
Jeffrey scratched his head. "The thing is, my grandfather thinks I like you, and he'll be there too, so..."
Amelia smiled. "Then you need to help me prepare a gift for your grandfather—something not too flashy but still appropriate."
"You can still smile about this!" Jeffrey really felt overwhelmed.
Everyone else was manageable. Even his two brothers at home—at most he found them annoying, but if he tried hard enough, he could still win. As for his dad, he was just coasting through life.
But his grandfather Oliver...
He was the tough character who single-handedly built up the Adams Group.
Amelia couldn't possibly not understand this.
The Adams family was one of the three major powers in Shadow City.
Oliver had 2 daughters and 2 sons. Jeffrey's father was the second son. His older brother died before he could start a family, and feeling he didn't have much ability, he just loved beautiful women and having children.
Over the years, Jeffrey's father had changed wives several times and had three sons, each with a different mother.
Jeffrey's mother was his father's last wife—she entered the family late and had him late.
Later, Oliver said Jeffrey's father's lifestyle was bad, so his father stopped finding new women. It was also because his father didn't do the illegitimate child thing, otherwise Jeffrey might have had some younger brothers.
Jeffrey's two aunts and other family members were involved in Adams Group internal affairs, but the person who would ultimately control the Adams Group would still be chosen from among Jeffrey and his two brothers.
Because of "Voice of Heaven," Amelia was tied to the Adams Group, which meant she was in the same boat as Jeffrey. Moreover, Jeffrey had already helped her a lot, and she needed to give back.
She had to go handle this matter.
Jeffrey understood Amelia's thinking and didn't act modest.
"I'll prepare the dress and gift," Jeffrey said. "I'll pick you up tomorrow."
After a slight pause, Jeffrey said seriously, "Once I kick those two out and take over, you'll have a share of the Adams Group."
Amelia didn't say yes or no, just told Jeffrey to go prepare.
"By the way, the legal department said the lawyer's letter for 'Slight Love' has been successfully sent."
Jeffrey left this message and hurried off.
Amelia nodded.
The lawyer's letter was also a test. Amelia wanted to see what exactly Isabella was thinking.
She always felt there was something strange about Isabella's various behaviors.
...
Night.
Isabella was selecting a dress for tomorrow evening.
Beside her was a caregiver from Veridian.
"Ms. Taylor, didn't the livestream exposure still have heat? Why attend the charity gala?"
The caregiver was very confused. "According to your medical records, your physical condition can't support such high-intensity work."
Isabella looked away from the mirror and turned to the caregiver. "Then please help me figure out a way to make this lie work."
The caregiver opened her mouth to say something but ultimately closed it.
Isabella looked hatefully at herself in the mirror. "With my current popularity and my relationship with William, the Shadow City elite circle gala didn't even invite me. I don't know what they were thinking!"
"But it doesn't matter if they didn't invite me. I'll go, and I'll go as William's female companion!"
Isabella curved her lips, practicing a fragile, beautiful smile in the mirror.
"I'll also hype it up big time, hopefully making Amelia die of anger."
"If she sees me standing in the position beside William that should have been hers, will she be heartbroken and disappointed, and run far away? Hahaha..."
Isabella was full of herself.
Just then, her email notification showed a new message.
Isabella frowned slightly, walked over, and clicked on the email.
It was a lawyer's letter from "Slight Love."
It clearly stated that Isabella should stop her infringement.
The caregiver beside her panicked immediately.
She said, "Ms. Taylor, what should we do?"
