Chapter 22
“Viv, it’s been a whole month. Come on, baby, wake up for me. I’m going crazy without you…“]
He felt the faintest movement in the hand he was holding and immediately went dead silent, staring at their intertwined fingers.]
Movement. Real, actual movement. Tears of joy streamed down his face as he called for the medical team. After chaos with doctors and nurses, Vivienne finally opened her eyes–though she was still fragile and slipped back into sleep almost immediately.
Drowning in relief, Dominic missed the strange way she’d looked at him in that brief moment of consciousness.]]
The next few weeks, he became her shadow during recovery. He wouldn’t leave her side unless it was absolutely necessary.[]
Vivienne had been eerily quiet since waking up–just staring into space, completely ignoring Dominic’s constant chatter. He could tell something was wrong but figured she just needed time to bounce back.[]
As she got stronger, she started sending him on little errands. At first he’d freak out, convinced she’d vanish the second he left. But she was always there when he got back, so he slowly started to relax.[]
Today, when she asked for pizza from across town and some fancy dessert from the other side of the city, he didn’t even hesitate.[]
“Just chill here, okay? I’ll be back in like an hour. Text me if you want anything else.“]]
For some reason, driving to get her food, Dominic felt that same sick dread from the day of her accident. His heart was racing, so he
called her.
“Sorry, the number you’ve dialed is currently turned off…“:[]
The automated voice confirmed his worst nightmare. He whipped a U–turn and drove home like a maniac.[]
He blew through every red light, abandoning his car in the driveway with the engine still running.
The house was empty. He tore through every room, but Vivienne was gone.
His phone and a letter sat on the coffee table.[]
With trembling hands, he opened it.
[Dominic,]]
[I dreamed the longest dream. You were just like Cameron and my parents–totally obsessed with Leona. You tortured me because of her lies. In the end, I jumped into that freezing river without looking back.]]
[It took forever after waking up to accept that this reality was different. But I can’t do it. I can’t pretend nothing happened and just go back to playing house with you.]]]
[I know you had the same dream. That’s why you’ve been terrified I’d disappear…]]]
[I have so much to say to you, but also nothing at all.]]]
II hope you have a good life. Just not with me in it.]]]
Everything made sense now. Vivienne had been reborn too.[]
Dominic collapsed, sobbing.]]

Chapter 22
As grief overwhelmed him, he heard the beeping of machines and medical voices shouting orders.[]
Searing pain ripped through his body. He opened his eyes to find himself in an ER, surrounded by chaos.[]
It had all been a dream. But why couldn’t even his dreams give him a happy ending?
[Viv, will you ever forgive me?]]]
[I’m coming to be with you.]]]
As Dominic’s final tear fell, the heart monitor let out a sharp, continuous tone.
The line that had been dancing across the screen suddenly flattened–stretched into one brutal, final note.[]
