The Truth in Our Veins

The Truth in Our Veins
"Get in," Audrey repeated, her eyes darting nervously to the street behind them.
Aidan hesitated, but Asher was already opening the car door.
"If she's our sister, we need to hear what she knows," he said.
They squeezed into the car, with Maya in the front seat beside Audrey and the three men crammed in the back. As soon as the doors closed, Audrey pulled away from the curb.
"I've been watching all of you for months," she explained, weaving through traffic. "Victor has eyes everywhere. We can't go to the summer house yet—it's not safe."
"Then where are we going?" Elijah asked, his shoulder pressed against Aidan's.
"Somewhere Victor would never look," Audrey replied. "A place that doesn't exist on paper."
Thirty minutes later, they pulled up to an old warehouse in the industrial district. Inside, the building had been converted into a high-tech lab.
"Welcome to my workplace," Audrey said, leading them through a security door. "I'm a geneticist. This lab is funded through shell companies—Victor has no idea it exists."
The space was filled with advanced equipment that glowed with blue and green lights. Computer screens lined the walls, displaying data and DNA sequences.
"You've been spying on us," Aidan said, his voice tight. "Why?"
Audrey's face softened. "I was adopted as a baby. I only discovered Victor was my biological father three years ago. By then, I'd already built my career outside his reach." She pulled up a digital file on a nearby screen. "When I learned what happened to our mother, I started investigating."
"And what did you find?" Maya asked.
"That nothing is what it seems with the Carters." Audrey turned to face them. "Including our DNA."
Elijah stiffened. "What do you mean?"
"I mean," Audrey said, picking up three sealed test kits from a nearby table, "that we need to know exactly how we're related before we go any further."
She handed each man a swab kit. "These are rapid DNA tests. They'll tell us if we share the same father."
The men exchanged wary glances.
"You don't trust the birth certificate," Elijah said quietly.
"I don't trust anything associated with Victor Carter," Audrey replied. "Do you?"
In silence, each man swabbed the inside of his cheek and sealed the sample. Audrey took them and inserted them into a machine.
"It'll take about an hour," she explained. "In the meantime, we need to plan our next move."
While Audrey and Maya huddled over a computer, mapping security at the summer house, the three men found themselves alone in a corner of the lab.
"If it's true," Asher said in a low voice, "if we're all related..."
"It changes everything," Aidan finished, unable to look at Elijah.
Elijah's face was unreadable. "Does it? We still need to find out what happened to your mother. We still need to stop Victor and find Alex."
"And what about us?" Asher demanded, his voice cracking slightly. "What about... this?" He gestured between the three of them.
No one answered. The weight of everything unsaid hung in the air.
Aidan stared at his hands. "I can't believe we might be brothers. All of us."
"Half-brothers," Elijah corrected automatically, then winced. "Not that it makes a difference."
"It makes every difference," Asher muttered. "Everything we've done, everything we've felt—"
"We don't know anything for sure yet," Elijah interrupted, his cool facade finally showing cracks. "Let's not jump to conclusions."
Aidan noticed the slight tremor in Elijah's hands, the way his jaw tightened. For someone usually so composed, these tiny tells spoke volumes. Elijah was terrified.
"I need some air," Aidan said suddenly, standing up.
He found a door leading to a small balcony overlooking the city. The night air was cool on his face. Behind him, the door opened and closed quietly.
"Mind if I join you?" It was Asher.
Aidan shrugged, making room at the railing.
"Remember when we were kids?" Asher asked, looking out at the cityscape. "How we used to pretend we had a secret brother who would come rescue us from Dad?"
Aidan nodded. "We called him 'The Shadow.'"
"And now we might actually have a brother. Two, if Alex is real."
"And a sister," Aidan added, glancing back at the lab where Audrey worked.
They stood in silence for a moment.
"What happened to us, Ash?" Aidan asked softly. "How did we get here?"
Asher shook his head. "Victor happened. He's been playing us against each other our whole lives."
The door opened again, and Elijah stepped out. He stayed back, hesitant to intrude.
"It's okay," Aidan said without turning. "You can join us."
Elijah moved beside them at the railing, keeping a careful distance. "Audrey says the tests are processing faster than expected. We'll know in fifteen minutes."
The three men stood side by side, looking out at the city that the Carter name had helped build.
"Whatever those results say," Asher said suddenly, "I want you both to know something." He took a deep breath. "The feelings I've had for each of you... they're real. They always have been."
Aidan's grip tightened on the railing. "Same here."
Elijah remained silent, his face a mask.
"Say something," Asher prompted him.
"What would you have me say?" Elijah asked, his voice strained. "That I came here planning to destroy your family, only to fall for both of you? That the thought of being your brother terrifies me for reasons I can't even explain?"
"Yes," Aidan said simply. "The truth. For once."
Elijah closed his eyes briefly. When he opened them, the walls he'd built so carefully were gone.
"The truth is, I've never belonged anywhere until I met you both," he admitted. "Even when I was lying, even when I was manipulating you... something real was happening. And I'm scared to death of losing that."
Before either twin could respond, Audrey appeared at the door.
"The results are ready," she said.
Back in the lab, they gathered around a screen displaying three DNA profiles.
"First," Audrey explained, "I compared Aidan and Asher." She pointed to matching sections highlighted in green. "As expected, they're identical twins. Same father, same mother."
She swiped to the next screen. "Now, for Elijah..."
Everyone held their breath.
"Elijah does share DNA with both of you," she said slowly. "But not in the pattern we'd expect for half-siblings."
"What does that mean?" Maya asked.
"It means," Audrey said, "that Elijah is related to you, but Victor Carter is not his father."
Elijah stared at the screen. "That's impossible. I have a birth certificate—"
"Birth certificates can be falsified," Maya reminded him.
"Then who is my father?" Elijah demanded.
Audrey hesitated, then pulled up another file. "I ran your DNA against another sample I've been keeping." She paused. "It's from Catherine Carter."
"Our mother?" Aidan whispered.
Audrey nodded. "According to this, Catherine Carter was Elijah's biological aunt."
The room went completely silent.
"My mother had a sister?" Elijah finally asked.
"Yes," Audrey confirmed. "Elena Hart was Catherine's younger sister."
"That would make Elijah our cousin," Asher realized, relief washing over his face.
But Aidan was frowning. "If Elena was Mom's sister, why keep it secret? Why pretend Victor was Elijah's father?"
"That's what we need to find out," Audrey said, turning off the screen. "And I believe the answers are at the summer house, where our mother died."
"Along with Alex," Maya added.
"And Victor's men," Elijah reminded them.
Audrey nodded grimly. "We leave in thirty minutes. But there's one more thing you should know." She pulled out an old photograph that showed four people: Victor, Catherine, Elena, and a man whose face had been scratched out.
"Who's that?" Asher asked, pointing to the damaged figure.
"I don't know," Audrey admitted. "But I found this hidden in Elena's belongings after she died. She scratched out his face in every photo."
Elijah took the picture, studying it closely. "My mother never told me she had a sister. Never mentioned the Carters at all until her dying day."
"What did she say then?" Aidan asked.
Elijah's eyes darkened with memory. "She said, 'Find the twins. They have his eyes.'"
"Whose eyes?" Maya wondered.
"I always thought she meant Victor," Elijah said quietly. "But now..."
A sudden crash from the front of the lab cut him off. Audrey rushed to a security monitor.
"They've found us," she said, her face pale. "We need to go. Now."
As they hurried toward the emergency exit, Elijah grabbed the DNA results and the photograph.
"Wait," Aidan said, taking Elijah's arm. "If you're not Victor's son, then who is your father?"
Before Elijah could answer, the lab doors burst open. In walked a man with familiar eyes—Carter eyes—that matched their own.
"Hello, brothers," he said with a cold smile. "I believe you've been looking for me."
